My favorite autistic representation is from the Office. Not just Dwight, Erin too! When Michael tells her about Angela and Andy, she covers her face with her hair, and has a meltdown that looks a bit like a panic attack, making unusual movements and noises. She takes things very literally, and often misunderstands jokes and sayings. In one episode, Pam asks her to “take care of the pens,” and Erin freaks out and because she wasn’t given specific instructions, and doesn’t understand what exactly she’s supposed to do. She spends to whole episode trying to “take care of the pens” when Pam just wanted her to sign for the package. When she’s in charge of the Halloween party, and Andy says it’s too childish, she ends up playing a really disturbing and unsettling video, and then bringing out a sexual card game because she doesn’t have a specific understand of what’s expected at a work party, and took “more adult” very literally. She has unusual ideas about what the “rules” are (thinking she has to date Gabe because he’s her boss, thinking she has to play words in scrabble with a theme), she can’t handle losing, and when she loses the paper airplane contest, she struggles to contain her feelings, before kicking a box. The list goes on! Characters in the show and people in real life think she’s weird, dumb, and annoying, which is how people often respond to autistic people when they don’t understand their behavior !

Personally I think that Erin's behaviors are more trauma induced (While she could have autism as well). She was in foster homes throughout her life, and never had stability with caregivers. I think alot of her freaking out about the specific instructions is more due to her lack of socialization or consistent caregiving and trying to do everything "Just right" to please the others (basically self-protection from abandonment, because of her abandonment issues). She pretty much connects all of her odd behavior, like covering her face with her hair or kicking the box after the paper airplane contest back to her time at the foster home. She talks about growing up in the foster homes and not having parents alot throughout the series. I think she has too much ability to engage in give and take in conversation, and maybe does a little too well with small talk, carrying on conversations, and interacting with others to be autistic (but I understand the autistic girls/women are better at masking). She exhibits alot of regressive behavior with Micheal, which I believe to be trauma and attachment-issues related, as she sees him as a father figure. She doesn't really appear to have any special interests. I work with many foster kids for my job and I see alot of these similar behaviors . Alot of foster kids and children who have dealt with alot of trauma can exhibit traits similar to autism, and similar sensory processing issues to kids with autism are common among kids with attachment trauma as well. Many foster kids can also come off to others as "weird", "dumb" and "annoying", but their odd behavior is more a result of trauma. I honestly see more autistic traits with Gabe. He has special interests. He really seems to struggle alot more with socialization. He almost always exhibits flat affect, and a pretty monotone way of speaking.

@SarcasticSoul1433 жыл бұрын
@@sakuratrees7306 I think both things are true! I think the writers made her "weird" because of her childhood, but they inadvertently ended up writing an amazing female autistic character. the most central thing about her character episode-to-episode isn't her covering her face or kicking boxes, but constantly taking things literally, not laughing at jokes, and having an unusual affect. Also, I understand you see her behaviors in kids you work with, but a lot of people with attachment trauma, even those who were in the foster system, by the time they get to their 30s have gotten very good at seeming "normal" until they have a close relationship with someone. But we see Erin's confusion and unusual behavior, not just when she's with Michael, who she sees as a father figure, but everywhere in the office. I'm surprised at what you said about give and take, because my experience with other autistic adults, especially women, is that many are very capable of it. I also think it's important not to focus so much on special interests alone, because some autistic people, especially adults, especially women, and especially those who didn't have love and support growing up, know to work hard to keep their special interests to themselves, or to fully suppress them. I like what you said about Gabe, and I think you're right! I just also think that people are a lot less likely to acknowledge autism in women, and that a lot of times someone's behavior is attributed to multiple things. IDK maybe this is all just because Erin feels like the best representation for me, and her autistic behaviors line up so closely with mine. Edit: to put it more clearly, I believe that an adult woman who was both autistic and had been in the foster system would display similar behavior to Erin, more so than an adult woman who wasn't autistic but did grow up in foster care.

And I’ve seen ones talking about Jake’s son, TV being autistic!! Then I feel like Jake would have ADHD. Just the way he’s simultaneously on both extremes of being super blunt yet also “poetic” and being absolutely insane (just wacky ig) and also being pretty smart, and the fact that he makes up a ton of songs for a lot of stuff, even when he and Finn were in danger he was singing about getting of out the cave. He also comes up with “weird” stuff like the bacon pancakes (which are fantastic might I add!!. And he has an odd thing with sandwiches too. He is also super protective of Finn which could be them playing into the dogs being loyal but the way he sort of “mentors” Finn is super cute!! Then he does “weird” things, like he sang to flame princess’s dad about kissing her, he picked up Finn with his “coochie”, and strangles a ghost with unnecessarily thicc legs, because A) he doesn’t understand that those are more personal things, and B) he just has that sense of humor. Maybe I’m reading into it too much, or maybe the wrong things but as of now that’s my stance.

I have ADHD and love Adventure Time, and it´s been many times the focus of my hyper-fixation (even more with the recent small season from HBO). PB and Marcy are my favorite characters since I was a kid (maybe cause I could feel they were queer). And I always related that phrase to a diversity and queer thing...like PB was talking about respecting queer people (cause she is a lesbian) in a very implicit way and also how people look and are different from each other, now the fact that she might be autistic adds one more layer to that phrase, it´s even more meaningful :)

Marceline with adhd? Here are my reasons: She has trouble regulating her emotions and frequently gets angry over relatively small things She understands people more than PB would but still less than a NT person would. I say this because you can tell she doesn’t quite know what to do in most emotional situations. She is super in touch with music. It’s her way of expressing her emotions because she has trouble just talking about them. She frequently takes things too far. When Finn was trying to get PB to go to the movie with him, marceline told him to do a bunch of stuff that just upset her. But I think part of her wanted to upset PB, but part of her was genuinely trying to help Finn. And with both sides fighting each other they ended up just going too far. She’s impulsive... She keeps a stuffed animal that she’s had because it holds sentimental value. This is normal, but she is *extremely* protective of it.

In a less obvious way, probably Willow from BtVS as well: early SI is computers, loves extensively researching topics, good at school, seems to get along best with adults, mostly stayed in the library between classes even before it was part of her role in the Gang, really bad at reading social cues, later SI is magic once she learns she can do it, has a tendency to be very open even to people she doesn't know well, frequently makes remarks that are odd or out of place, and if she sets a goal for herself she WILL accomplish it (no matter how many rules she has to break) or have a breakdown. Also has a very... unique style that seems more based on comfort and repeating certain outfit pieces; even as this evolves somewhat, she never seems to care what other people are doing for fashion very much.

Yes, Parker was always my favorite aside from Hardison. She was the best-developed character in S1 due to the fact she was almost able to figure out locks and knew when things didn't seem right (Juror Number Six Job), and was described by Eliot in the pilot as; "That's twenty pounds of crazy in a five pound bag" after she charged off the roof Yo Samdy Sam actually referred to Anya as autistic in her video on autistic characters I've always leaned more towards Gideon rather than Garcia as autistic as half the time he seemed to barely register social cues and focused more on the cases, but I'd agree with Dr. Reid given his far more reserved and logical mindset In "Bones" I've always thought of Zach and Vincent Nigel-Murray as higher-functioning autistic given their special interests while Temperance was clearly far more noticeably autistic. Vincent often seemed to periodically drop random facts that didn't always make sense, but he was able to function with Temp almost better than anyone else (besides Brennan's best friend Angela)

I have ADHD and autism. I think the Doctor from Doctor Who is definitely coded as autistic. Each version of them shows it differently. - 2 had the flute thingie - 4 just gave me Vibes™ - 5‘s first story was literally about him needing a room with zero stimulation - 6 was bad with social cues and I read somewhere that his companion thought he might be autistic - 10 had a hard time controlling his tone, and sounded rude when he didn’t mean to - 11 also gives me Vibes™. Also he had very specific food preferences and definitely ADHD. - 12 (oh boy) didn’t like to be touched, if he got on the topic of planets/history he couldn’t make himself care about what anyone else had to say (I CANNOT tell you how hard I relate to that), he had very little empathy, he could NOT judge age, nor read facial expressions, took things literally, need I go on? - 13 is totally fine with suddenly being a woman, and doesn’t understand boundaries very well (I can relate) - they’re not just different because they’re alien. They’re different from their own species too I‘m actually surprised I haven’t found this in the comments. Castiel from Supernatural is my favorite one and the one I can identify with the most, in terms of the way he acts and relates to other characters. It's also made very obvious that Cas is not like the other angels, even early on. Then as the show goes on there's a ton of references to Cas being made different or 'having a crack in his chassis'. But Cas is the literal embodiment of free will. And also Jack is very Autistic. He also struggles with social interactions, in ways that are similar to Cas but also very different. He also displays stimming multiple times, and has a fit that made me feel so seen. The way he clearly experiences sensory overload was so relatable. I also have no faith that the writers did any of this with the intention of either character being this way, but they both definitely are. I love them both so much.

What if Autistic individuals are just half angels that were given a human experience. Considering that they have “higher senses” they probably also have higher senses to the spiritual world. One thing I know for a fact is that autistic individuals don’t put up with anything fake or any nonsense . In a way angels are like that. Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter was obviously autism coded but I always thought Hermione Granger was neurodivergent as well and just really good at masking as compared to Luna so she didn't get bullied to the same degree. my rationale for Hermione: -- struggles with social interactions -- special interest in learning and reading and collecting books -- doesn't care much about her appearance (hair going crazy except when expected to tame it like the yule ball) -- book version of her cries a lot (meltdowns) when she's stressed, thinks her friends don't like her (she has a hard time making friends so this is fair) -- friends with more guys than girls because stereotypically girls tend to talk more about their emotions and be able to read each other's body language more and she doesn't relate to that -- constantly raising her hand in class and "showing off" because she thinks she has to be the best even though no one has put this pressure on her but herself and she also doesn't realize that others think that doing so is weird -- hyperfocused on her schoolwork third year with taking too many classes and the time turner that she utterly burnt herself out and was having constant breakdowns -- prefers to spend time in the library alone than with people because books are easier to understand - genius - when talking about something she's interested in (aka anything academic) she get's so excited and won't stop until someone makes fun of her for talking so much or says she's annoying

I honestly didn't like jim or pam. Jim is the Hollywood go to stereotype of the "Good Sociopath". There is no such thing as a good sociopath. Hollywood is obsessed with that type of character because they want to trick the public into believing that good sociopaths exist. Hollywood doesn't want the public to know the truth that there are ZERO good sociopaths, because most people in Hollywood and the government are sociopaths. Empathy is what makes people good. Sociopaths are fully incapable of empathy. Jim Halpert is a prime example of the abuse that some neurotypical people put neurodivergent people through.

I feel like Bart and Lisa Simpson could be good representation for ADHD and autism respectively, at least from the times I used to watch it. Bart for obvious reasons, and with Lisa's special interest to just learn and learn and keep learning, no matter what the thing is, she's learned something about it and will tell you what she can about it. Also the fact she has a lot of difficulty forming relationships with other kids and is often bullied by them, and gets along way better with adults. Like, I was very similar at her age, and I really loved and related to her a lot as a kid.
@andrewmalinowski66733 жыл бұрын
She was classified as so smart in one episode she even joined a Springfield "Mensa" along with Comic Book Guy and Prof. Frink, both of whom I thought of as autistic since being diagnosed. Comic Book Guy seems obsessed with comics and has the catchphrase: "worst 'x' ever" and in the episode when Bart made the comic book his response was: "a result so hackneyed it would make Stan Lee blush." Frink seems like an eccentric genius but the Mensa episode he shows a "sarcasm detector" and has other issues with social interaction
@chreudinegueur63673 жыл бұрын
What you describe for Lisa are all traits that are commonly attributed to high intellectual potential, which I've been diagnosed with, and I'm not sure how to differentiate between the two terms(HIP and autism spectrum). There seems to be a whole lot in common btwn the two categories. Do you have any info about that?

Do I personally believe Lisa is autistic? No. Do I think she will likely be the most relatable member of the Simpsons family for most autistic people? Yes.
@kpaxian60442 жыл бұрын
@@chreudinegueur6367 I agree. I think of Lisa as being intellectually gifted and some of the issues that arise from that will also impact autistics and especially gifted autistics. Gifted children who are not getting proper enrichment or support and not among peers who are doing advanced work for their age...often feel isolated/ often are bullied or dismissed/ often feel "different"...because they are... Because of that, if they don't get the support they need (emotional or intellectual) they might have moments of social awkwardness. Haven't watched The Simpsons in awhile but Lisa struck as highly gifted but not overly autistic in any real way (no real issues that I could see in the show relating to autism forms of perseveration, executive functioning difficulties or sensory over or underwhelm issues.) I could see Bart being ADHD, though. Most definitely. Also, there are other characters who are highly gifted and written initially to be on the spectrum...such as Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds. There are a few moments when is he quite literal beyond what you'd expect. He's so bright he recovers quickly and then adapts to learn the style of the person...but it's shown, along with sensory sensitivities, perserveration, tactile defensiveness, and even headaches and neurological issues linked to what is coded as sensory overwhelm. There is also a tendency for him to infodump when anxious and he's shown to have a number of issues that are often comorbid with autism...picky eating, GI issues (stomach upset, sensitivity that is severe with dairy) tactile defensiveness, stimming (so much stimming :)), difficulty making or sustaining eye contact, dyspraxia, and even not seeming to understand when people are not interested in his monologues (Sepncer, I relate, buddy!) So I could easily see how Lisa had some of the social issues related to just being different but her issues did not seem autistic specific to me. Just the fall out of being highly gifted and not accommodated for most of her life. Both are highly gifted, but when you compare the characters...one does read as autistic and one to me reads as gifted but misunderstood.

My personal favorite recent version of Sherlock is in the show Elementary, which does later have a canonically autistic character as one of the few people Sherlock actually shows some genuine interest in, and very much suggests that he has some kind of neurodivergence although they don't specify or ever solidly confirm. I think in the show he's probably depicted more as having both ADHD and autism, based on his behaviors overall and ability to hyperfocus but also switch rapidly between subjects given the proper motivation. And it's probably arguable that Joan Watson could also have neurodivergence although definitely a more socially camoflaged expression, she definitely has the attention to detail and special interest portion but seems more able to fit in to the neurotypical world, but is still very clearly different on some level from most people -- also, I identify really closely with a lot of her behaviors and the way she reacts to Sherlock makes perfect sense to me, as a high-empathy autistic person who probably has inattentive-type ADHD also.

Autistic cannon characters: Cristina Yang and April Kepner (greys anatomy): Cristina: special interest in cardiology/cardiothroacic surgery, blunt, focused, well off on her own. April Kepner: bad with social cues, shut downs (season 13) special interest in religion. Elena Alvarez (one day at a time) Special interest: social justice, poor social skills (like Pilar in the funeral episode points out aka Stephanie Beatriz), also definitely is ADHD. Belle (beauty and the beast) Special interest: books. Town Outcast, smart, doesn’t have anyone who shares her interests until the beast. Ravi and/or Luke from Jessie have got to be at LEAST neurodiverse in general, Luke having ADHD and Ravi autism. Ravi’s interest in his culture and reptiles, and Luke’s poor with social cues like in season 1 in particular. And one we all know is autistic (literary!) AMELIA BEDILIA DO WE EVEN NEED AN EXPLANATION? I know not everyone has special interests and poor social skills, these are just who I relate to most:)

Monkey D. Luffy. -He has narrow interests to the point he can not focus on anything outside of them. -Has a comfort object, two if you count the figurehead of his ship. -Picky eather. He will still eat basically anything, because he is constantly hungry (for unrelated reasons), but he will very vocally complain about the taste. -Faceblind to the point he has sometimes trouble recognizing his closest friends. -Self harms when too stressed out. -Always introduces himself in the same way. -Very bad liar. -Asexual, even by Shounen protagonist standards. -Naive.

-His extreme sense of morality. He is such a nice guy and always goes out of his way to save entire countries because the people are hurting. He feels for them and has no problem stopping at multiple places on his way to Laugh Tale. -Appears stupid, but when it really matters, he's smart and knows what to do. -Always speaks too loudly and has a problem toning it down. -Will say exactly what is on his mind to your face and not care. Super blunt. -Gets distracted easily by things he likes, and will touch/eat anything he likes with low impulse control. -Is ultimately unbiased. He does not judge people for being different races, genders etc. he had no reaction at all to the "Candies" when he was in Impel Down. He was just happy he met some nice people.

I recently started watching One Piece again, and I got more ADHD from him, mostly because he can never seem to stick to a plan unless he has some kind of emotional motivation, see Punk Hazard to Dressrosa arcs especially, I'm not sure what happens after that. Also being loud, highly emotional, not paying attention, mishearing things, and impulsivity are things I was told are part of ADHD when I got diagnosed. Although most of my traits could be seen as either ADHD or autism (I saw a venn diagram and most were in the middle). Not to mention the silly nicknames. I'm not sure if that's ADHD or autism specifically, but I know other neurodivergent people who love nicknames and calling things funny names. Luffy has goofy names for places and people he comes across, and sometimes it could be seen as not paying attention enough to understand what the original word was and making up something similar (auditory struggles come with a lot of conditions), or just because they're fun and easy to remember. I just switched from watching the dub to the sub since I ran out of dubbed episodes, and while some of the nicknames are a little different, it still gets the point across well. And he was confirmed asexual, most likely aromantic too, which is neat to see. Then again, there are a lot of characters that are eccentric, hyperfocused, and socially awkward in One Piece, so who knows how many other autistic or ADHD characters there may be. I thought Inazuma is cool with not being as emotional, or not showing it much, and keeping the same clothes even though genderfluid.

@@jlbeeen I think there's a lot more autistic characters in manga and anime than most people realize in the first place. Their culture being already more on the introverted side, the various mini cultures of heavily invested interests beyond the level of just "nerdiness" etc. Not to say that it's a great environment for autistics, but I think there are more there than people realize, and I think you see a lot of evidence of that in their media(even live jdramas)

I’m pretty convinced that the majority of the characters on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic are coded as neurodivergent. Here are a few of the characters that I personally believe display autistic traits (or at least ones I greatly identified with). Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, Princess Luna, Maud Pie, Derpy Hooves, and I’m sure there are plenty more!

Yes!! I thought the same thing!! I LOVED/ still love My little pony, & I’ve always thought twilight sparkle might be Autistic, because she struggles with friendship, social situations, and is very logical and rigid in her thinking!! But I LOVEE that show!

Jeff from the cartoon Clarence is one of my favourites with autism! he has a germ phobia and struggles with miscommunications/people overstepping on his personal space boundaries and rituals, but Jeff also really loves his friends and is such a loveable character. he also has lesbian moms, and clarence has a step-dad and no other father. their other friend comes from a really poor and crowded household. i think it’s wonderful and realistic representation of familial diversity in that show, and it’s such an endearing cartoon for any age to watch too. i highly recommend it!

It would be interesting to see a video talking more about masking. I think it would be interesting in learning about the goal of masking, but even more so the effort/energy that is involved in masking. As an able bodied person, I find it can be harder to understand the effort required into masking since they are seeming to present in a neurotypical way so we often don’t realize what actually goes into it. It would be interesting to see something like a compare and contrast between what would masking vs. non masking look like, if that is something you would be comfortable in sharing. If not, I completely respect that.

Yes to go to part 85! It is SO good to see your face. And yes, good luck Charlie to us living in Ontario... oh. I melted when you mentioned Phineas and Ferb! They really balance each other out. Who I think may be on the Autistic Spectrum: Sherlock from BBC Sherlock Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, Castiel from Supernatural, Temperance Bones from Bones, Neville Longbottom from Harry Potter (books more so than films), Luna Lovegood, yes, now that I see people mentioning her in the comments, that makes a lot of sense (books and films). And I think.... perhaps Christina Yang from Grey’s Anatomy.

Boyd from the Ducktales reboot is a good one too. I also headcannon Huey and Gyro as autistic too. I also heavily relate to the Tina one. I come from a middle class family and can't afford to be tested. No one said anything when I was a kid, because I am mostly high-functioning. Most adults assumed I was just a shy girl who cries a lot. Me and my family realize now that I am actually autistic, but we still need to work up the money to get tested. I hate saying I am self-diagnosed because it makes it seem immediately false. Because of all those people going on tiktok fake diagnosing.

Hey I have a question: what if you have the symptoms of autism and many of your autistic friends say you are but you didn't go to a therapist or phys..... ( I don't know how to spell it sorry 😐 ) what would you do?
@bnha3 жыл бұрын
hey just so you know, self-diagnosing is, imo, the first step to getting diagnosed officially. its pretty widely accepted as the person above me said, and if you think you have autism and have some real reasoning? you're most likely correct. i'd say ask your parent for it and if they're hesitant give them some real reasons why you think so, because that's what i did. idk if that helps, but good luck dude!

just remember to be careful when self diagnosing and do your research properly and talk to other autistic people to learn more about it, then self disgnosing is completely valid if you truly believe you’re autistic, believe it can help yourself to self disgnose and have looked into it as much as you can. By the way, the word symptom is usually used when talking about diseases and autism isnt a disease. Im sure you didnt mean anything by it cause everyone needs to learn so i understand that you’re new to using the correct terms and stuff. We mostly use the word traits to describe typical things for autistic people, but words like characteristics and signs work well as well. Good luck! :)

i haven’t seen many people talk about this but hiccup from how to train your dragon!! i very much relate to him. in the beginning he tried really hard to be “normal” and like other vikings. his special interests are building/creating things and eventually dragons. he struggles with social interaction and explaining things. idk it’s just a headcanon but yeah :)

I want to add Charlie from The Perks of Being a Wallflower! One of my favourite books, films and characters, he's very sweet and caring and flawed and 100% to me has strong autistic vibes (he has social struggles, anxiety, special interests in both music and reading/books, and honestly just his internal narration and way of thinking gives me very strong vibes - he's fairly black and white and logical, overthinks and questions a lot of societal things, strong moral code/sense of justice, spends a lot of time thinking about, being confused by and wondering why people feel and behave like they do, feels deeply, etc) Have to heavily reccomend the book and film, it's beautiful and excellent whether he is autistic or not (though it is quite emotionally intense so maybe be careful there)!
@Artwasheree3 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree
@kpaxian60442 жыл бұрын
I think it's harder to get a read on Charlie since he also is dealing with severe, severe trauma and is dealing with dissociation, black outs, depression, anxiety and so much else. The hyper focus could be his way of immersing himself in a subject to avoid having to think about what he's spent so many years repressing. I think for characters who are recovering from trauma...where we don't know much about how they acted before the trauma...it's so much harder to get a read on them. But I can see why he gives off autie vibes.
@thecatmangaming55032 жыл бұрын
@@kpaxian6044 Oh he's for sure absolutely traumatised yeah, but imo he gives autistic vibes as well as traumatised vibes haha My personal read on him is that he's both
