I read Master and Margarita when I was fifteen and absolutely loooved it, even though I probably missed a lot of stuff 'cause I don't really know christianity and due to my young age. Haven't read it since but I have recommended it to everyone and the ones who read it loved it too so I'm really looking forward to reading it again after all these years. Some parts I remember dragging a bit but it's worth to get through those 😃

I read it last year (the master and margerita) and now I buy all his books - I've read one short story and it does echo Master and Margerita ! I loved it though yes it is really special. I could connect because I studied Russian and Russian history and it does matter a lot because the author is actually criticizing the Russian government a lot. It's a political book actually and I guess that without that background, it might sound just crazy ! Other than, I read 12 books in March - I really enjoyed The Removed by Brandon Hobson :-)

I just finished “the end of men” and I agree all the characters sound like the same person (the author), despite the fact that they’re doctors, sociologists, nannies, heads of govt branches. They all sounded like pure emotional reactions. And there’s the tiniest bit about “the middle east” at the end, as if the author didn’t want to even address that factor in this apocalyptic future, yet maybe 1/3 of the book is all about “what would women do re: dating???” 😐

I saw orange covers on the thumbnail & thought you may be reviewing “Klara and the Sun”, but guess that will have to wait. Your last read sounds interesting, I once had a brief relationship (relationship? .... well extended interlude) with a man (gay, obviously) who had been a Vietnamese refugee when he was quite young. It’d be interesting to examine the themes in the novel & compare them to his experiences & in turn my experience with him. Lovely to see you (as ever) Charlotte & glad you’re feeling better. I also found the prose a little cringe at times in OEWBG but I really do think ocean vuong has a lot of interesting insight on toxic masculinity in the US in some interviews , I also really want to read the master and margarita! Sounds weird af
