Great video. I just have the standard 5-15 outlet in my apartment garage and get about 5 mph of range out of it. Gets me about 60 miles of range (18% battery) in 12 hours overnight. If your garage has an extra NEMA 5-20 circuit (like from someone that had an extra dedicated circuit for a chest freezer or something), you can easily and cheaply turn it into a NEMA 6-20 outlet for under $100 if you do it yourself, or find an electrician friend if you're uncomfortable. That will charge a Model 3 at ~15 MPH. But again, this has to be an extra dedicated 3rd circuit to the garage, due to code requiring two separate garage circuits, one for lighting and a standard 120v receptacle circuit.

Unfortunately , the breaker box is located in the back of the house. It does not make financial sense to install a port in my garage, the wire is also not up to code to change the outlet to a 6-20 either. It’s ok though, my employer works just fine for me and it’s free!

One of these days I have to check my garage outlet and see if I can swap the adapter for a 5-20 or add another outlet to it. I guess I have to make sure I have 12 gauge wire in there and a 20A breaker on my panel. Fingers crossed.
@phillipsusi1791
@phillipsusi1791 3 жыл бұрын
Hrm... typically homes have multiple 5-15 outlets on a circuit with a 20 amp breaker. Each outlet is only allowed to draw 15 amps ( 12 for continuous loads ). I would guess that code requires a larger breaker if you have a 5-20, but as long as it's the only outlet on that circuit, a 20 amp breaker should work. I installed a 14-50 outlet but could only fit a 30 amp breaker in my box ( 20/30 tandem ) so while it isn't to code and I have to limit the charge current to keep from tripping it, it works fine and I normally keep the current limited to less than 20 amps anyhow ( 15 amps at 220 charges it over night just fine ).
@aultraman
@aultraman 11 ай бұрын
These NEMA 5-20 outlets are not all that common. I think some office buildings have them for heavy duty vacuums. Some older houses have them for window AC units. Perhaps NEMA 14-30R is more common unless you have a gas dryer. I like NEMA 14-30R way better because of the higher current. With the NEMA 14-30R, I would set the current to no more than 25A.

Really excellent advice, Evan! I bet that most people don't know about the 5-20 adapter. Have you considered a Y adapter that would combine two out of phase 5-20 or 5-15 outlets, in order to make a 6-20 or 6-15 240 volt 20 or 15 amp circuit? You could more than double your charging speed, even at your private home.

There is a thing you can buy that you can plug into two different 120v outlets if they happen to be on different circuits ( and those circuits are on different phases in your breaker box ) to charge at 220. It's pretty easy though to just install a 14-50 outlet and charge even faster, and doesn't violate code and then you aren't relying on having two different outlets that happen to be on opposite phases ( often times all of the outlets in the garage will be on the same circuit, or if they are on different circuits, may be on the same phase anyhow ).

If you plug the NEMA 5-20 cord into a standard 15A outlet using the 5-20 to 5-15 adapter, does the Tesla reduce the current to 12A? In other words, does the Tesla charge manager measure the real potential of the AC source, or is it sensing the type of adapter that you use?
@EMtesla1
@EMtesla1 5 жыл бұрын
The 5-15 adapter will automatically tell the Tesla to only pull 12A. Hope this answers your question...?
@CrazyNickOO7
@CrazyNickOO7 4 жыл бұрын
No it will not. You have to manually lower the current draw to 12A if you use an adapter for the 5-20 plug. That’s why I HIGHLY RECOMMEND not using an adapter for the cord he had. I’m disappointed Evan didn’t give that disclaimer in his video. I hope people haven’t caused fires because of this
@EMtesla1
@EMtesla1 4 жыл бұрын
Ummm what am I missing, you have the Tesla 5-20 adapter and you plug it into a nema 5-20 receptacle, how are you causing a fire? Also the car with automatically recognize the Tesla adapter to only pull 16 amps.
@CrazyNickOO7
@CrazyNickOO7 4 жыл бұрын
@@EMtesla1 sorry I think my comment was confusing. You're correct that the 5-20 Tesla adapter will automatically limit the current to 16A which is good and safe. Frammis's question is what if you use the small adapter you had in your fronk for the extension cord and use the Tesla 5-20 adapter with the other adapter you had in your fronk to allow it to plug into a 5-15 outlet. That's where the danger lies. The Tesla 5-20 adapter doesn't know you're using another adapter and plugged into a 5-15 outlet so the Tesla adapter will still try to pull 16A and cause the 5-15 outlet circuit breaker to either trip or potentially melt and cause a fire. So the danger is using the small 5-20 to 5-15 adapter you have because the Tesla adapter doesn't know you're only plugged into a 5-15 outlet so the user needs to be cautious and manually change the charging amps to 12A on the screen
