Dave, Great post. One suggestion, if you are even semi-regularly installing chargers, put a sacrificial piece of 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood on your garage wall to mount your chargers. That way you are not destroying your drywall.

This looks like an excellent charger with nice features in phone app. If on a tight budget, you can simply buy a mobile charger and plug into your NEMA 14-50 receptacle. But, do not frequently unplug it unless you have a commercial receptacle (>$50). Back in 2017, I used the free 40 amp Tesla mobile charger and it worked great. For a few dollars, you can get a 3-D printed wall bracket and cradle. Today, I would only do a hard-wired connection to get 20% faster 48 amp charger. Not only faster when I forget to charge, but it’s safer.

I hope you had a Hubbell 14-50 receptacle installed if you are going to switch between this charger and the Tesla charger. The standard 14-50 receptacle is not made to keep plugging in and unplugging, as this can lead to the receptacle melting and could catch fire.

At about 4:10 that was a NEMA 14-30R receptacle which electric dryers use.

Actually, it is closer to 3:55 but that’s a great point. Although the 14-30 has only 3 slots so that is the 14-50. 👍🏻 In fact, I am fairly sure that a 14-30 cannot support the same amount of current draw as the 14-50.

I was thinking, what if I installed the unit outside and turn off the auto charge? Then, a stranger comes by when I’m not home. They download the app, pair it to the unit, and turn the auto charge on. The unit starts charging right away. Can this be done?

Isn't it fine to charge to 100% frequently on level 2? I know charging to 100% on a regular basis from DCFC isn't great, but I thought that wasn't really the case with level 2.

@jeffs6090 I don't think charging to 100% is much different on a level 2 vs level 3 charger, as most EV battery management systems greatly reduce charging speeds the closer you get to 100% (so your level 3 charge is likely closer to level 2 speeds above 90% SoC). However, it is generally recommended not to charge to 100% when level 3 charging, as due to this speed reduction, most EVs take longer to charge from 80% to 100% than they do from 0% to 80%. So it is faster to unplug and drive to the next charger, unless you really need your full range to make it to your next stop.

one cannot use a dryer outlet to charge their car. they are not made for constant use. they must be replaced with a beef up 100 dollars to handle the constant charging. i dryer outlet would be a fire hazard.

Maybe I'm missing something but what exactly does using this unit provide above just charging strait off the 14-50 receptacle ?

It has a bunch of additional features, such as preventing unauthorized use and remote monitoring with an app.

We call it a charger, but it’s really a safety device. Correct name is Electrical Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) which safely delivers power to your EV.
