Charging Two Car Batteries with one Solar Panel

To charge two batteries from one solar panel, you need two solar charge controllers. My new PWM5 controller has been specifically designed to be used in this configuration. Both batteries are individually monitored and controlled to ensure optimum charge rate and voltage. This is a common configuration on boats. One battery is used to start the engine and the other is used for navigation electronics or TV/fridge.

Should be OK. Just check the circuit to make sure you're not putting a dead short across one of the batteries.

you should make a video of this with two battery banks that have their own controllers built in, such as a jackery. Many people have multiple units

Did you figure out to do that yet? I've been searching online to try to find out how to achieve something like that with no luck. My own particular issue is that I want to have 2 different charging points in my house but both connected to the same solar panels so I can use either one (but not necessarily both at the same time)

Thanks for the informative video. I'm trying to get some advice on how to use Solar panels, to charge my deep cycle Electric trolling motor batteries, three 12 Volt batteries, all wired in series, to supply the necessary 36 Volts to the motor. The controllers you are showing in the video, are they simply diodes to isolate the batteries from each other?

OK, thanks for the prompt response. Can i then connect one of the batteries to a different one and equalize the charge. I am charging the 24V batteries on a boat lift then i want to hook one to charge the 12v starting battery as well.

This is all veery good but if one of the batteries is a starting battery how do you prevent the second battery helping out overloading the wiring?

Must have a diode between the house and start battery, or a switch that's commonly labled house-start-both. Diode can be found at camper supply houses, the switch at marine supply stores. It's commonly red and round.

I have a question. I have 3 solar panels on my sail boat. Each has 15 watts, I believe. I have two marine batteries connected together (negative to negative and positive to positive); *they are exactly the same battery. Note: Yes, I do have the charger that came with the panels and that's what I use to charge them. Is this bad? Or I still need a separate charger to charge each individual batteries? I'm planning on stalling 4 more batteries to make a total of 6.

VisVires they will charge up together although they should be deep cycle batteries as start batteries are just for a quick burst ie: to start an engine and will suffer and deteriorate after multiple changes. If one of the cells is damaged or old then both batteries will charge the same level as the damaged or old battery The solar panel array you have seem very small at 15 watts each and won’t be very efficient at charging your battery bank. Maybe invest in at least one 200w solar panel. Can pick up for about £100

Im sort of thinking of a similar setup only i want to also have the two 12v batteries connected in series to give 24v output and would this work with two mppt chargers. My objective is to have an efficient system that allows me to use 12v and 24v when needed. the only limitation would be that for the 12v output you can only draw from one battery while the 24v takes it from two.

Nick Tutill my system has worked well. 2 banks of 12v batteries, each 12v bank has its own charger and panels. They keep both sides balanced. I also installed low voltage disconnect on each bank to prevent a chance of damage in case one bank discharges too quickly. This is important because my 24v inverter does not see the two 12v banks separately and only the combined voltage. Works well and has less loss compared to having a 24v to 12v converter.

Didn't work for me, got a AGM and lead acid, agm charges fine on mppt while the lead acid is overcharging to about 16v while charge controller everything is below 12v because of this but no dice. Time to call a mechanic electrician.

can't see the point. If the batteries where in parallel then you would only need one charge controller as both batteries would be getting charged and why would you need to charge your starter battery from solar it has an alternator for that, all that is needed is a split charge relay and run batts in parallel both batteries charge and when engine is stopped no draw from starter batt total waste of time money and energy
