In Astonishing Glasgow, even a crossroad has stories to tell and in this episode I try to fill in some details about the leaning fountain, the lost treasure and the surviving mansions.

The Charing Cross mansions is such a beautiful building. Even though it was designed for aesthetics, the thought of a clock with no mechanism fits the Glasgow sense of humour just as much as the cone-headed Duke at GOMA (even though it pre-dates it by 100 years or so 😉)

Not in this case. As I said in the video the area of Charing cross in Glasgow is named after the block of flats that stood on the corner.

The leaning memorial has been cleaned up. There was foliage growing out of it a few years ago and I thought the whole thing would just rot. Glad they maintained it.

The day I was there it was completely fenced off. I was worried that a collapse was being predicted but nice if the fence was there while they were carrying out maintenance.

My great grandma was a maid for a doctor that lived in the Charing Cross mansions back in the early 1900’s (gg was born in 1905) One story that sticks in my mind was that she was made to walk it to Charing Cross from where she lived in kilsyth. Cannot imagine how painful that walk was!
@fabianmckenna8197

Family myth which most likely never happened........ Seventeen miles from Kilsyth to Charing Cross taking around five hours to walk which is possible but you'd have to leave home at 2.00am for an 7.00am start. Bear in mind that roads in those days were nothing like today's.

I've always been curious to the story of the bridge over the M8 that suddenly ends halfway up, not far away from this location. Do you have any information on that?

Ah, at the end of the Kingston bridge. Originally there was to be a Glasgow inner ring road and these ramps would have connected to the southern section. The southern section, had it been built would have passed right over Glasgow green then turned onto the high street and re-joined the M8 at Townhead in front of the Royal Infirmary. If people thought the M8 destroyed Glasgow can you imagine the change these plans would have made? There is a map of the proposed plan on my Monkland canal video kzbin.info/www/bejne/boHZk6dtfdKpoqc

The 'bridge to nowhere ' was left unfinished for 40 years. It was supposed to reach the Anderston Centre, which was planned to have more shops and housing, but never really came up to expectations. In 2013, it was extended join the National Cycle Network.

Glasgow folk don't normally do long vowels, so they pronounce Charing as 'Chayring'. On the other hand, London folk love long vowels, so they pronounce Charing as 'Chaaring'. By 'Glasgow folk', I, of course, mean people born and bred in the city of Glasgow.
