To be fair although it's free but there's nothing in it these days. They even punted the Salvador Dali that was gifted to them for the nation to see. It's been shit for 20yrs or so. Although it's still a decent building to walk around. But the transport museum was a major trick lost. and all that surrounds it.😁

Last comment, again someone has probably said this before but the bloke with the cone on his head is Duke of Wellington. The City used to take the cone off but got fed up as it was always replaced so they left it and embraced it as a landmark in its own right. Ironically it’s probably more celebrated with the cone than without, especially now it’s situated outside GoMA! Glasgow does like to cock a snoot at Authority!

Saint Mungo was born to Saint Teneu in 518 AD, in Culross, Fife. It is believed that Teneu was Scotland’s first reported rape victim and unmarried mother. The young Teneu was sexually assaulted by the Welsh prince Owain mab Urien, resulting in her pregnancy. Upon learning of Teneu’s pregnancy, her father, King Lleuddun of Lothian, became outraged and sentenced her to death. In carrying out this sentence Teneu was thrown from Traprain Law, East Lothian. Teneu, however, survived the fall and managed to escape, sailing in a small boat to Culross in Fife. Upon arriving in Culross, the pregnant Teneu was taken to the local monastery where she was looked after by Saint Serf. In 518 Teneu gave birth to a boy, naming him Kentigern. Saint Serf decided to raise Kentigern, training him to become a priest at the monastery and giving him the nickname Mungo meaning “dear one”. During his time at the monastery, Mungo became the favourite student of Saint Serf, often causing jealousy and resentment amongst his monastic peers. This jealousy and resentment continued to grow eventually causing Mungo to leave the monastery. After his departure, Mungo travelled to Stirling where he lived at the home of a holy man named Fergus. As time went on the pair became close friends and on his death bed, Fergus told Mungo of his dying wish. Fergus’ dying wish was that his body be placed upon a cart, which was to be pulled by two bulls, with his body being buried where the bulls stopped. Mungo carried out the dying wish of his friends and travelled with the bulls until they eventually came to a stop near a small burn. Mungo gave a name to the area, he named it Glas Ghu (Glasgow), meaning “dear green place”. It was here that Mungo would start the first Christian community in Glasgow, building his church near the Molendinar Burn, which would later become the site of Glasgow Cathedral. It was from here that Mungo would say the words “Let Glasgow flourish by the preaching of his words”. This would later shorten to “Let Glasgow Flourish” becoming the motto for the city. Mungo and Teneu would later become co-patron saints of the City of Glasgow. It is believed that St Enochs square in the city centre was the medieval site of a church built to honour Saint Teneu. The four legends of Saint Mungo The City of Glasgow’s coat of arms depicts an oak tree, a robin, a bell and two salmon each with a ring in its mouth. These images relate to the four legends of Saint Mungo. “Here’s the Tree that never grew, Here’s the Bird that never flew, Here’s the Bell that never rang, Here’s the Fish that never Swam.” The Tree that never grew During his time at the monastery in Culross, Mungo was left in charge of the holy fire which burned in the rectory, ensuring that the flame was not extinguished during the night. However, due to the increasing jealousy of the other boys, they put out the fire in the hope that Mungo would be punished. However, upon waking, Mungo noticed that the fire had gone out. Acting on this discovery, Mungo collected frozen branches from an oak tree, which were ignited as a result of Mungo’s prayers. The Bird that never flew The tale of the bird also comes from Mungo’s days in the monastery. At this time, Saint Serf had a pet, Robin. The pet, however, was killed by some of the boys at the monastery, who wished to place the blame on Mungo. Mungo, however, took the bird in his hand and commanded it to live, to which the Robin immediately sat up and began to sing. The Bell that never rang It is believed that the bell was given to Mungo by the Pope in Rome. It was said that the bell was used in services to mourn the dead. The bell quickly became a notable symbol in Glasgow. The fate of the original bell is unknown, however, a replacement which was bought by the city’s magistrates in 1641 can still be seen in the People’s Palace Museum. The Fish that never swam As mentioned, the salmon in the coat of arms of Glasgow, contains a ring in its mouth. The ring was a gift from Hyddderch Hael, King of Cadzow to his wife Queen Languoreth. Languoreth in turn gave the ring to one of Hydderch knights. The King was suspicious of his wife, believing her to be guilty of infidelity. The King organised a hunting party in which the knight would be present. As the knight slept the King took the ring and threw it into the River Clyde. The following day the King demanded to see the ring which he had given Languoreth, if she could not produce the ring then she would be sentenced to death. A distraught Languoreth visited Mungo and pleaded with him to help find the ring. Acting on this Mungo sent one of his monks to the River, instructing him to bring back the first fish that he caught. On the monks return, Mungo removed the ring from inside the mouth of the salmon.

Another well-presented video Last year my wife and I visited Glasgow and had a great time, so much so, we had another short break a couple of weeks ago. There is so much to see .. we preferred Glasgow to Edinburgh. @2:52 Yes, the £4.30 paper day -ticket is quite good ... but with a Smartcard it is only £3.10. Last year, we applied for two smart cards online, which are free and they are even posted out to your address, again for free. We went to the ticket booth and topped up £3, for a day ticket last year. This time, as I said, the top up required was £3.10. The cards have our faces on, so a nice little souvenir of Glasgow too. Regards from Whitley Bay

That was so interesting!! Hub’s mum, sadly no longer on this mortal coil, came from Govan (saw the station name on the loop map) and she would have LOVED to have watched your video. She was born in Govan and had three bros and one sister. When she was about nine years old, because they were all living in a relatively rough and poor area, her parents sold up all they had (not much really!) and emigrated to New Jersey where they all lived for ten years, to live a relatively better life and employment options etc. However, Difficult Circumstances in the USA (the country was in a right state apparently) meant that the whole family had to go back to their old home in Scotland until the financial situation in the US improved, which they did. They stayed for about five years in Govan and the USA after WWII was rich and prosperous, unlike parts of Glasgow which had been badly bombed and were a “slum site” and once again, sold up and moved to the USA £ permanently this time. His mum, though had met the man she was going to marry (hub’s dad) and moved “down south” (to Dartford!). She only had the hints of both American and Scottish accents after living in the South of England for many years. Going forward many years, her brothers and sister all took American nationality and all had but “lost” their Glaswegian accent and all spoke with broad accents from New Jersey and Texas etc. The first time I met his mum’s eldest brother, when he came to see his sister, this man - who had been living in Austin for many years, had all the swagger and style of a natural born Texan and even spoke with a drawl…..but - the funniest thing ever - we had picked him up from Gatwick airport and took him back to my mother in law’s house - he was “American Stars n Stripes” etc but on greeting his sister - his accent went straight back to Scottish! Listening to them greet each other as they started chatting, it was almost impossible to understand them! It was like they were still in Glasgow! Literally, och aye the nooo!😬😁 Fab video again - just loved those “Muriel’s” 😂😂

I’m from Govan so I’m a Govanite but Govan was jammed with people so you never had to leave it, it’s older than Glasgow itself, the church that holds the “ Govan stones “ is reputed to be the site of the longest continuous Christian worship in the uk, birthplace of Rab.C. Nesbit, Sir Alex Ferguson, people call themselves Govanites first then Glaswegians.

@@johnmclean1046 it would have been mother in law’s birthday today, 6th July - she would have been 96!! It was her parents who chose to leave - they had been promised wealth and riches if they moved to the USA!! Her own father, was indeed a pure Govanite - she told the tales of how he often he left the USA to go back to his ‘home’, to the Docks area (I think he was a Docker’s Mate 😐) on extended holidays - he never forgot his true Scot’s identity - his house was the only one in the New Jersey district that proudly had the Saltire flag flying outside! The last time my mother in law visited Govan, was when her eldest brother came to England with his wife in 1986 - it was his pilgrimage to visit all the places that their father, who at some “great age” had passed away the previous year, had spoken about. It was an emotional time for all of them.

@@weedle30 hi it’s a small world, my wee da was a docker too , Govan is lined along the river so it was docks, shipyards, dry docks, my parents came from McLean st in Plantation which is where a lot of dockers came from, we then stayed in Harmony row a famous name at one time, any schools or street names? And next time you're here head down to the Riverside and yous will love all the wee fun gadgets outside to play with. And there you'll also find the funky transport museum. Although it's outside the city centre, but you just follow the path along the Clyde side across from st Enoch underground. Or if yous drive up then that's easier access. Oh.
