This game has much more depth than it seems in the first playthrough. Thanks for this episode!

Yes, there's much more to it than first appears, and yet the game remains quite simple. I love it when simple games surprise you with their strategic depth.

We have the game as well and it really shines at the higher player counts (and great with a few beers).

If you want more chariots on the track, do the mechanics (card draws, tokens et al) allow a player to race two chariots forming a team? Racing two was pretty common in Circus Maximus with smaller amounts of players. Typically you'd have a heavy chariot acting as a goon while your light (or medium) chairiot raced for the finish.

I have played lots of racing games and my two current favourites are this one and Heat. One of the designers of Heat is also responsible for the cycle game Flamme Rouge which I enjoy. Snow Tails is also fun, If you like being incredibly mean then Ave Caesar is great!.

Our friend Gastel, who appears on the channel from time to time, says Flamme Rouge is the best racing game he has played. I found Heat underwhelming, to be honest, but I would be open to playing it again.

very nice... my gang does like this quite a bit... I'd argue the Whip icon/token is a catch-up mechanism... it adds 5 extra spaces to the end of a regular move, you just can't pass anyone with it... so, it does let you make up some ground if you are able to use it... (truth be told, I don't really care for catch-up mechanisms, they always seem artificial to me... why should you get rewarded for getting your tail whupped? :) )

"Racing games are slow and clunky", YES! Auto racing games are my specialty, and I agree. And adding more players makes it even worse. HEAT: Pedal to the Metal has managed to streamline this quite a bit. HEAT is about my 4th or 5th favorite auto racing game. My favorite is one that let's me qualify an entire field one at a time and run a 500 mile race in about 90 minutes, but it is a solo only game (which is why it is so fast). Strangely enough it also has more details than most games as well.

One thing that seemed different and nice is that this game does not reward someone who hangs back to only see that person skip ahead at the end vis drafting…the whip rewards you to make up ground but not overcome

Yes, it's actually hard work to catch up in this game if you fall far behind. This is helped by the chariots getting faster towards the end of the game.
