I’ve read a article on Nintendo Everything about how Brothership’s director and producer explained how they switched from Shinomura to Sakamoto and I’m gonna point some things out: -Otani said that they did considered bringing Yoko Shimomura back to compose this game, but when development was moved to Acquire, the new developer wanted a fresh start so they requested a new composer. That’s how Hideki Sakamoto joined in development -In the early stages of the music, Miyamoto came in and said that “It’s too ordinary” lacking the Mario-ness and they understand his feedback. -The staff struggled capturing the Mario-ness in the soundtrack which slowed down the process. -Later, Sakamoto used more brass and South American instruments to make the music sound brighter and his direction went smoothly. The whole soundtrack was live-recorded so this is the first M&L game to use real instruments. I feel like if they brought Yoko back while still having Hideki to co-compose this game, then it wouldn’t been too hard from the get-go. If his music was still criticized, then she would’ve also give him some pointers as well. It’s a miracle that many Twitter users mistakenly believes that Miyamoto doesn’t like Yoko’s music in the series when the tweet says *Mario & Luigi: Brothership devs explain change in composers, finding 'Mario-ness' after Shigeru Miyamoto said the music was "too ordinary"* Only reading the headline, but not the article, bruh… I’m convinced that he actually does praises her work.

A lot of people tend to say "this doesn't fit a boss fight" because most people think boss themes are to reflect confronting a dangerous threat. But the thing is a lot of y'all forget the Mario and Luigi series is known for breaking conventions because the majority of battle themes throughout the series are cartoonishly silly with a hint of urgency for good measure. Also the light motif of the connection of islands theme showcases the importance of the battle. I like this take on the boss theme because instead of it giving the vibe of " this is dangerous be careful" it gives the vibe of " this is important, but dont be discouraged. You can do this"

A headcanon i have for why this boss music is very upbeat may be because, after fighting so many bosses in the past games, Mario & Luigi see the bosses more like an Average Tuesday at this point, so the boss theme is not the boss's theme, and rather, the Mario Bros's theme because a thing is for sure, nothing can stop the brothers at this point.

It overall sounds more triumphant because Mario and Luigi have been through this time and time again. They're going to win, it's just a given with veterans of battle like them. But you still have plenty of moments in the song giving those sinister vibes that remind you yeah this isn't anything new for the bros but you're still fighting a boss, more often than not one they've never faced before. They could still lose, but they're both together taking this on and when they are they're practically unstoppable. I get that vibe more with the miniboss theme than this boss one which sounds more sinister, fitting as it's a major boss.

Never Let Up is forever unbeatable to me but I absolutely agree that this one is UP there. Arguably even better than Tough Guy Alert, and this is coming from a guy whose favorite video game composer of all time is Yoko. chrange9714 put it best, the new guy absolutely did right by the incredible precedent she set for the series but also made it his own in such a nice way. I’m not totally in love with Brothership’s soundtrack, I think way too many tracks have big brass sections where they’re not really needed, but if this is really the end of Yoko’s Mario tenure I fully trust him to carry on the torch.

i’ve only played until rumbla island so don’t take what i say seriously but i think the game portrays the vibe as fun and adventurous whilst showing the bro synergy with mario and luigi meanwhile the previous games were portraying more of a vibe that they need to save the world otherwise it’s doomed and pressuring the bros to trouble thus making it more intense

Honestly, I like how the composer this time around isn’t yoko, this is the first M&L game to take place in an entirely separate world and having a different composer with a different style is a great way to subtly reflect that without hampering gameplay

At first i thought this was an odd choice for an boss theme. It lacks the seriousness the other boss themes of the series had. But after i heard it a few times and continued playing i think it really fits this game especially. I feel like brothership is a lot more wacky and whimsical than the other games (which could be pretty serious from time to time) and this Theme perfectly encapsulates the colorful Fun this new adventure in this new world has to offer. It wouldn't have worked as a Boss Theme in the other Games but for this game it's absolutely amazing.

People complaining about this one apparently not being serious enough for a main boss theme as if Paper Jam’s boss theme, Bowser’s Inside Story’s boss theme, and Superstar Saga’s boss theme are all serious tracks. People will really find any reason to complain about something new and different from what they know, even if it doesn’t make sense.

This game was everything I had ever wanted, it has its flaws but nearly all of them feel like nitpicks to me (selecting luigi's options in the menu with A, luigi now jumping and traversing on his own, the timing being more generous) everything else about the game I just loved, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish, just like all the others. And of course, I LOVE THIS TRIUMPHANT BOSS THEME!!

I choose to believe the decision to let someone other than yoko handle the music was deliberate, as a way to reflect how the game takes place in an entirely different world than the one we’ve come to know from past installments, and using the music to convey that is actually a pretty dang good way to do so without interfering with gameplay
