This may have not been the best movie, but to be fair, it did have a better message then the 30's version. The 30's message is There is no place like home and never leave it. This message is Believe in yourself and face your fears.

The film may have been bad, but it did have a better message at the end than the 1939 one. Dorothy in that film ends it with saying she'll never go looking for adventure past her own backyard. The message in this one was that the world is a terrifying place, but not to let that stop you. That you can't hide yourself away, it doesn't work out ultimately.
@alechendrickson552610 жыл бұрын
I agree. Any good movies with that message?

Yeah, this movie really cheapens the original Broadway Musical and cheapens the Wizard of Oz as a whole. I don't know if the destroyed ghetto representation of Oz was supposed to be social commentary, but it destroys the point of Oz being a strange and magical fantasy world and just makes you feel like Dorothy is walking through the set of Mad Max. The cinematography is awful, the talents are not utilized to even half their potential, and the whole thing stinks of Schumacher. But DAMN I love "No Bad News". A terrific song, performed amazingly by Mabel King - who actually played the Wicked Witch in the Broadway version too, and one of the most underrated 'villain songs' ever. This song needs more mainstream attention.

I think some of the sets are nice too, especially the WTC set which means more now after 9/11. Too bad its ruined by bad camera shots and bad preformaces.

The red slippers were made for the 1939 film only, due to the fact that it was the first movie to ever use Technicolor. They wanted the shoes to really stand out when they were on screen. In this film, the color of the shoes is correct if you follow the Baum novels. The shoes are silver in the book. :)

This movie was needed in 1978. It holds a nostalgic place in the African-American community. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of mainstream, however, it still has great singing and depicts black people as elegant and classy. Most films didn't do that when I was growing up in the early to late 70s.

Actually, the Witch of the West not showing up until halfway through was something from Baum's novel--we never even meet her until AFTER our heroes have seen the Wizard. It's something that can be a little jarring to those who only know the 1939 movie.

Ok while i DO agree with critic that this was not that good a movie or as good ad the original, you have to understand, you cant really relate to it as well because its just not made for you and based on your culture so a lot of the things like the ppl dancing half naked or w.e goes over your head, you wouldnt understand, not that its your fault, or even the dark and crappy sets they have, its so we as black ppl can relate because as sad as it is, thats where alot of us come from, and really thats what the wiz was meant to be, a black cultured spin on a classic movie, now did it do it perfect? No not at all, but its still hard to judge it if you dont know exactly where its coming from

Why did all the cast agree to play a part in this piece of crap? Yes, this movie has an all-black cast, and many references were made to African-American culture, but that all-black cast was subjected to one racist joke or stereotype after another, and the name of the motorcycle gang is the most controversial part. And except for Emerald City, the movie just made Oz into a ghetto neighborhood. Do you agree with this? Because I'm not in a position to complain for a community I'm not part of.
