Making so many changes to the stage version was where this went wrong. In the stage version of The Wiz, Dorothy was a teenage Kansas farm girl as she was supposed to be. In fact, the stage Wiz was actually (in terms of storytelling points) a lot closer to the original novel than the 1939 movie! (Two different witches for North and South, the Kalidahs the Lion fought off, the Witch capturing Dorothy and the Lion and making slaves out of them for weeks, and so on.)

When I think of Nipsey Russell, I think of him reciting poetry on game shows like Match Game, Pyramid, and Password, and even in the rare cases when he was a host instead of a panelist... like on the Star Words pilot, Juvenile Jury, and Your Number's Up.

If you took any stills from the easy on down the road song, you can use them to teach children about stranger danger. Because if Michael Jackson wasn't creepy enough they put him in a 70s hobo clown costume. Run. Just run.

I guess the reason the Oz in "The Wiz" looks so dark and gritty and filled with trash is probably because the filmmakers wanted to establish the look of Oz if it was in New York, and only Black people lived there. But...I WAS FROZEN TODAY!!! He. Love that line

I was introduced to the Wiz after my dad got me into the Wizard of Oz when I was four or five. I was obsessed so my mom rented the Wiz. It was just like the Wizard of Oz except I noticed that all of the cast was black and the music was different. I became obsessed with it, got the VHS some years later (we had the Wizard of Oz already). My sister kept watching it. Then it was during ninth grade (first year of high school) when I joined stage crew and the spring musical that year was the Wiz. I had gotten a $10 Target gift card for Christmas and figured to use it on the DVD. Now before this, I had seen The Wiz go on lists as one of the worst movies of all time or that the reviews for the movie were just not good. When I watched it again, I could see why this would be deemed a bad movie...but I still love it just because it's bad. I do actually like some of the musical numbers, costumes and set designs but at the same time- it is extremely long, Diana Ross was too old to be playing Dorothy and some parts of the movie were plain weird. I absolutely love "Everybody Rejoice" and still use it in Facebook posts. So yeah- I still like it even though it's not that good of a movie. Also worth noting is that Quincy Jones had a part in working on the soundtrack for the movie. This is how Michael Jackson was able to meet Quincy and later on, they'd make three of MJ's best albums: Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad.

I think Doug (or the NC) is being too harsh on Joel. Yes he made 2 bad Bat films...BUt he did do good films like Falling Down, and Phone Booth. Also he wrote the script, and i think if a film is bad, the writer AND director should be responsible for the outcome of the film.

Michelle Lawson It's not that THEY don't get it, it's obvious that Sidney Lumet and Joel Schumacher didn't get it. They were writing what they thought was "black" and seemed to just depend on stereotypes. I'm very surprised that Motown Record (the producers of the movie) went with a white director and writer. Someone like Gordon Parks probably would have had a better understanding of the source materiel. They aren't bashing the musical or the music, they're bashing the movie. This was a very poor adaptation of a great musical.
@CyberShwartz
@CyberShwartz 9 жыл бұрын
Michelle Lawson It's not fair that white people get called out for being racist when there's fuckheads like you spouting racist shit like this and get away scotch free. What you're saying right now would be like me saying that you wouldn't "get" white western movies because you're black, and I can appreciate the westerness of the film and you can't because most black people weren't in the west.
@reneelucero2923
@reneelucero2923 7 жыл бұрын
Dude, a) That's racist b) It's not that they don't get it, it's just that it's a bad movie...end of story, stop trying to justify it and making it about race, art is supposed to be for everyone, in a good movie you don't have to "Get it" you simply have to enjoy the characters and plot, if it was about race, americans wouldn't be so much into anime. c) once again, fucking racist.

As a kid, I loved Space Jam. Then I became 30 years old, watched it again, and realized I was an idiot as a kid and I'd laugh at anything. It's called growing up. You realize the things from your past aren't what they used to be. And even as a kid I watched Batman & Robin and thought "Wow... this is really awful" - but then again, I was also watching the Animated Series at the time so I knew how Batman was supposed to be.

Mad Hatter The fact that it's based on an underground Marvel comics team of JAPANESE superheroes. No one on the team is really Japanese. Hiro is Japanese American, two members are white(one member in the comics is Ainu, the Native People of Japan) another is dark-skinned. And in the comics, Baymax is not a plush toy. He's a badass battle robot who can shape shift. And San Frantokyo raises too many political and social questions.
