Since the mid 2000s, Lil Wayne was the face of cash money but Juv and Mannie Fresh were the building blocks that formed the label not Wayne. He hopped on an already successful label when his first album dropped.
@mazsax9999 жыл бұрын
Kevin Breaux .... A successful label that would've folded 10 years ago w/o Wayne. Manny was the heart & the sound of Cash Money, but it was Wayne's growth as an artist that kept them from being a flash in the pan. Juve is a Down South legend, and Manny is a GOD behind the boards; but trying to tell me Cash Money as a label would be where they are w/o Wayne's efforts is just short-sided. Did you hear the numbers at the end?!? Carter 4 did a million in the first week and his one of his worst albums!!! Lets not even compare his OTHER albums to all the other Cash Money talent (not Young Money, which again, is IMPOSSIBLE w/o Wayne). No involvement from Fresh or Juve. His constant evolution is what kept Cash Money relevant. It's like drafting Kobe outta high school....Yeah Shaq, Fisher, Gasol, Bynum are all big players who were critical in winning a ring. But the motor that makes that machine work is Kobe. Same principle for Wayne. Not the best MC ever, but one of the most original artists and certainly a very diligent worker & label head.
@yandibreaux15359 жыл бұрын
D.L. Grimes I didn't disagree with you, what I meant to say was that Wanye sustained the label and helped it prosper when some of the original members jumped ship.

Snoop Dogg kept the lights on at Death Row when Suge went to prison, Tupac died and Dr. Dre left to start Aftermath. 50 Cent kept the lights on at Shady records when Eminem fell back and no one was checking for D-12. Kanye West kept the lights on at Rocafella when Dame Dash, Biggs and Jay Z all split up and no one was checking for Beans nor State Property & Dipset left. Yes Charlamagne is right Wayne kept that label not only relevant but kept that cash flow coming when everyone left them. Vlad's buggin'. Lil Wayne IS Cash Money! Always has been. Listen to any Hot Boy$ single and Wayne has the best verse on every one. "Bling Bling" even though he wasn't on the album version, "Hot Girl" when him and Turk exchanged bars, "We On Fire" all verses were equal, "Playa Why You Hatin" although it technically wasn't their song, "Project Bitch," the list goes on. I will always remember Lil Wayne as an double edge sword, One of the greatest HipHop pioneers lyrically underrated & the man who almost killed the lyrical, essence of HipHop. The man who influenced 2 generations to try and bite bits of his style miserably and fucking up HipHop almost temporary with his mainstream success. But the GOOD will outweigh the bad for me and i'm definitely checking for the Carter 5 especially considering how Lil Wayne is writing bars again.

Chars last point was right on the money. If Cole can sell 600K plus albums in a month, and isn't nearly as popular at Wayne. Then Tha Carter 5 would go platinum easily.
@aikenstodd9 жыл бұрын
The reason why Cole sold as much as he did was because of that David Letterman performance right before his album dropped. That song had a strong message and all types of folks related to what he was saying not only the hip hop audience. Wayne isn't saying anything at all. CTG doesn't know WTF he's talking about I didn't even watch the video yet.
@TheKomet1239 жыл бұрын

I hate when people say that because that's not true at all. Envy album went gold because he had legitimate artists who the public was checking for on his project and Wayne was doing numbers because of the Cash Money success but everybody who dropped wasn't automatically selling 500 thousand and a million records those that were was because their music was legitimately good unlike what it is nowadays.

I also agree that Weezy has a big enough name that he could drop Carter % without a big single and could sell 250K easily first week (disappointing compared to C3 or C4) because of name alone. Baby knows this and I think as long as he keeps Lil Wayne from dropping it, the longer he can keep Wayne on the books. I think this could actually be beneficial for Wayne because that could force him to focus on dropping quality mixtapes again (SFTW2 wasn't one)

Cash Money history: Early days with acts like Magnolia Shorty (RIP), UNLV, B.G., Wayne (I know they go back a few years before this but I just went with the big names). It was B.G. and Juvie (and the Big Tymers as well) that got them the deal with Universal. B.G.'s albums sold over 100K independently. After they got signed to Universal (their best era), Juvie and B.G. carried the label. Then it was the Hot Boyz and Big Tymers. Wayne had gold albums but he was still low on the totem pole. It wasn't until all those acts left (along with Mannie Fresh) that Wayne got his shine. As Charlamagne stated, Wayne was close to signing with Jay-Z but stayed loyal to Baby (mistake) and ended up with Young Money. He dropped all those classic mixtapes, Like Father Like Son and then C3. He kept that label (CM) afloat for 4-5 years until Drake and Nicki came aboard. Phase 4 included Weezy, Nicki, Drake and later on Tyga, Lil Twist, etc. All YM artists. Baby was the only one dropping albums on Cash Money. Just like the other artists before them, Drake and Tyga said they got screwed out of their royalties and even Nicki has come out with subliminals about the label. Baby thought he was on top of the world with Rich Gang with Thug and Quan but they ended up fading. Wayne had to sue to get his paper. Drake has OVO and probably gone once his contract is up. Nicki as well. Baby has no loyalty. All he cares about is $$$.

I agree with Charlamagne 100% on this one. Yeah, Juvenile and those other guys were hot. No question about it. Juve dropped first and Cash Money blew up. But after they left, Cash Money could've died out. But who kept it afloat? Wayne. Period. If Wayne hadn't stuck around as long as he did, CMB WOULD NOT EXIST. Young Money might, but Cash Money sure as hell wouldn't.

You are 1000% right!!!! All those mixtapes Wayne dropped back-to-back, all the features and remixes, The Carter album series itself... WAYNE WAS THE OIL THAT KEPT THE CASH MONEY GEARS GOING.

Here's what i believe happened: Wayne wanted to release the Carter 5 late 2014 but nicki minaj's the pink print was already set to be released on that time and Birdman realized it would be a bad business move to release the albums of two of the biggest artists on the label at the same time because they wouldn't maximize on their potential sales. And the Carter 5 didn't have enough buzz behind it yet for a Carter album compared to the pink print so nicki became the priority. id say wayne was kinda in his feelings

Lil Wayne was NOT the first to use the term "bling, bling"... Jesse West (Third Eye) who was part of Puff Daddy's original hitmen crew, is the first to use that on the "Dolly My Baby (Bad Boy Remix)" by Super Cat.

I'm not a big Wayne fan but what the fuck is Vlad talking about? Juvie hasn't had a hit in 15yrs. Drake and Nicki signed because of Wayne. Everybody else on the label are 1-hit wonders at best.

Me personally I was listening to cash money when wayne was 14 .. I had all of bg's albums and knew them top to bottom had all of cash moneys albums when manny fresh and bird man was rapping.. so as along time fan (more so back then) I can say we were listening to all of them back in those days.. once wayne took off and got in his zone the entire label focused on him and rode his back ..

Charlamagne is really trying to re-write history lol. Wayne didn't get a top 10 hit until 04 with "Go DJ". Birdman had top 10 hits in 02 with Clipse and Diddy.

Charlemagne keepin it G. True Juvie put Cash Money on the map with hit after hit but he faded away eventually. Fresh was the signature sound but he had to leave because Baby is bad business. But if Wayne had left with the rest of them, Baby and Slim wouldn't be doing most of the shit they're doing now. Wayne IS Cash Money. Birdman fuckin shit up tryna run with young guys whose sound won't last long. At least Wayne somehow stayed great behind the rock album

When wayne was featured on the soldier song with beyonce an t.i. He got really famous and after go dj,fireman, and finally lollipop he was the face of mainstream hiphop

I've never been a fan of Charlamagne but he's telling the truth of this subject. Wayne has been the one steering the ship since the departure of the Hot Boys & Mannie Fresh. If he leaves & takes Drake & Nicki with him Cash Money will fall because I don't believe young thug can carry CMR with rich homie quan alongside him.

Baby had a few songs even though they were mainly on Lil Wayne songs and even though back in '06, niggas were NOT playing Baby. I remember one time in class dudes were listening to a song by him on the pc, baby's verse came up and everybody voted to skip. Worst part is everybody knew the exact time his verse ended.

Keep it real. Vlad's right about Wayne being not as hot early on. It was all about Juvie. But the reason that Baby & Slim didn't wanna put out Carter V is not because of music, it was money. There were terms involved the release of Carter V that had Wayne receiving a large sum of money that Slim & Baby didn't want to pay. Those two have built their business on not paying artists for work, & they're not trying to start now. Wayne has a lot of people representing him that are supposed to eat from that money he's owed, and wern't gonna let him sit there and not pay Wayne. Now Cash Money is messing with THEIR money.
