My Ma's favorite singer. She would sing all his songs when I was a child out loud in the house. Or she'd use a Walkman (yes kids, a Walk) and be cleaning as she listened to Charles. If I bothered her, like the little annoying 5 year old bastard I was back in 1984, she'd take off the earphones and say..."I'M LISTENING TO MY CHARLES!!!" I know she saw him a few times in concert, I think mostly at a place called WESTBURY MUSIC FAIR in our home area back in Long Island, NY. My Ma passed away this past March and I find myself listening more and more to Charles. Oh man what I'd give to hear HER singing Charles Aznavour again. I miss ya Ma, and I love you, and will see you again one day. If those gates open for me when my time is up...id like to dance with you, "in the old fashioned way". #MyHero

I made a mistake once, not knowing the lyrics, and playing the violin solo of the Maman, to a wedding old lady, saying this is for you.

The translation being in past tense was a bad stylistic choice in my opinion. It makes it sound like the Mamma is already dead, diminishing the emotional impact of the song, especially the ending: "jamais, jamais, jamais tu nous quitteras." For me, the French lyrics feel more like a bittersweet celebration of the Mamma by her family in the last days she is still alive. It pulls the listener into this one emotionally-charged, fleeting moment, rather than telling it like a story that happened in the past.

It seemed to me he was describing an event that had already transpired and therefore was in the past.__the translator

@@VNRose3 Some times when traslating romamces languages into english came up some problemes like that. french as italian and spanish , they all share a way of see the past that english not. I think it hapens cause of the structure of english. sinces my point of view its better not to traslate this song literally but whit context even if some words or phrases change. Sorry if my english is not perfect, Im leaarnig it . I hope I had expresed well. Good job you have donne here

@@carlosguzman4945 It's all about culture. Latin languages and especially french are romance languages, I prefer even to say "feeling" languages, done to bring and share emotions... They are not easy languages and ask long sentences to explain them. English on the other way is a technical language (it's not a reproach), it's way simpler and permits foreigners to understand each other faster but making that, permitting that, it means emotions lost a lot. Then that's not surprising that english senteces are way shorter than french or other latins languages. English sentence often brings a single idea, when latins non only brings several ideas but let the door opened to imagination. It's relatively easy to translate english to french, it's very harsh to translate frnech to english. In french, the place of the words, the chosen words, the tone used, all are important and can change the meaning of a sentence. I don't say anglo-saxons can't understand the french sentences, it's not impossible but it is harsh. I do believe that to understand a culture we have to live with the fellow countrymen of this culture or at least to meet them regularly... I have had the chance to live twice outside my country (4 years Germany, 6 months in indian ocean isles), this world is very rich of its different cultures. once again, I want to tell I don't blame anglo-speaking for "unprecise" translation which miss abit of the emotion this song has fully inside... and I have the best respect for every culture. And to finish, it's only my own opinion, that doesn't mean I am right ;)
