I'm confused about Chuck's 250k question. When it says "defects" to the west, I thought it meant MOVED. In this case, it seemed like the 50-50 did a favor leaving one eastern country (Belgium) and one western country (Canada), so I thought Baryshnikov defects TO THE WEST from Belgium which is in the east. Now that I see it's Canada which is a WEST country, how does Baryshnikov DEFECT then if he's already IN THE WEST??? I'm thinking since (I'm doing research as I'm typing this) he was born in the Soviet Union, he defected FROM THERE. Looks like I just answered my own question, but it seemed like the answer should've been an eastern country since "to the west" was in the question.

Pretty sure they just meant "west" as in like, the western world. Western European countries not in the USSR, USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, etc. Yes, Baryshnikov was on tour in Canada, but he needed to evade the security/police that usually travel with athletes/VIPs from communist countries to prevent them from defecting while on tour. Same deal with Cuban baseball players. A few of them have defected while the national team was playing games in a western country
