Thanks for this! I've been slowly listening to the various Schubert competition pieces to see what the competition produced: good to find another winner! A small (& not very important) detail: though Havergal Brian was apparently always convinced the first part of his Gothic Symphony nearly won the big prize (only foiled by Glazunov's vote), in fact the British regional winner was John St Anthony Johnson (who?!) with his piece 'Pax Vobiscum' -- also on KZbin - who shared the prize with a 'completion' of the Schubert Unfinished by Frank Merrick; Havergal Brian came 2nd, though his music was apparently considered for the big prize (at Tovey's insitence) even so... To amplify the info you've set out above, according to one contemporary report the regional winners were: Gustave Guillemoteau and Henry Ryder who jointly won the prize for the French-speaking areas (France, Belgium, Switzerland), both completing the Unfinished; in Germany, Hermann Wunsch for a symphony; in Scandinavia Kurt Atterberg - with Jensen and Emborg 2nd & 3rd; In the Russian zone Michail Chernov for a symphony; in Poland Czeslaw Marek - his winning piece was his Sinfonia (again on KZbin); in Italy, "Eduida Dannian" (surely a typo?) for a symphony; and in the Spanish zone Oscar Espla for a symphonic movement, “Schubertiana” (not on KZbin, but one of his symphonies is). But this contemporary list must be incomplete, as it doesn't include Hans Gal or Franz Schmidt!!

Both Hans Gal or Franz Schmidt are listed at the top of the list. I was not aware of John St Anthony Johnson ....thanks
