Accepting massive donations from businessmen in return for favourable business practices in the state and lodging millions in an offshore bank account to avoid Irish tax. £270,000 raised and given to help Brian Lenihan with his illness to pay hospital bills, only £70,000 of it went to Brian. He was forced to pay €6.5 million in unpaid back taxes. Yes on the social side Haughey was more liberal (he even had a mistress, how European of him) but the rest of it, he stunk.

I am not so sure about that. The 1980's when Charlie was at his pinnacle were one of the worst decades in the Republic since the foundation of the Irish state. The country was beset by high inflation, high unemployment, and high immigration. While in the North the Troubles seemed non ceasing, violent, and intractable. Remember the overwhelming sadness of the hunger strikes in 1981. I am not saying this was all Charlie's fault who by the way was extremely clever in my opinion, but he could also be chameleon and devisive at a time when the country needed integrity above all else.
