Trumpets and cries of “God save the King” were heard as Charles III was proclaimed monarch during an elaborate ceremony at St. James's Palace.
Charles became king immediately after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, but a historic meeting formally confirmed his role on Saturday.
It is the first time that cameras have been inside this ceremony, the last of which took place over 70 years ago.

Having only read books relating the history of a new king or queen taking the throne, it is incredible to me to be privileged at this time in our history to actually witness these many centuries old protocols and traditions. To think that these positions have been in place for hundreds and hundreds of years is truly miraculous. I feel fortunate.

Even if you're not a royalist, you can't help but be astonished that these are centuries to millennia-old traditions, that are seen once or maybe twice in people's lifetimes. The uniforms might be a bit modern (18-19th century) but the proceedings are almost exactly the same as those of medieval England.

I'm an American, and a family friend collected really high quality portraits of Queen Elizabeth and gave 3 to my folks as wedding presents (his collection is now in a British museum). These things hung in prominent places in our home in a rural dairy farming town in Wisconsin until I was in my 30's so I saw them all the time every day for half my life. I always felt she was somehow symbolically, unofficially, a maternal part of the family but also because I was kind of impressed with and proud of how she conducted herself as a monarch and did her job - kind, gracious, professional, the 3 D's - duty, devotion, discretion, her staying in England and her conduct during and after WWII, etc. Old fashioned, universal values and kind of a grandmotherly demeanor. I also, unrelated, share her name and her daughter's first two names. So just, weirdly, just always felt a strange connection. And I'm not even a monarchist and feel for the colonies and India, etc (centuries of human rights abuse and $45 trillion+ in looted resources, the kohinoor diamond, "jewel in the crown", Egyptian loot, the Elgin marbles, etc) plus I look at all the pageantry with mixed feelings - cool and interesting but a little strange and "a lot" at the same time! 🤔😸 And at the same time, recognizing that ceremony, rituals, history, traditions, etc all play an important role in a culture. And of course, the unofficial family link to my own! 😹😜😹

THANKS: Shawn Flynn 11 hours ago I'm an American but I feel so connected to this. My ancestors on my father's side were Irish (meaning they came from what is now the Republic of Ireland), so they departed for America as British subjects. My ancestors on my mother's side were mostly English. In fact when researching my family tree I found out that I am distantly related to Anne Bolyen and Queen Elizabeth I. So likely my distant relative had this ceremony for herself when she became queen. Rest in peace Queen Elizabeth II and God Save King Charles III.

Historical moment for all of us in the Commonwealth. One thing that struck me is that, among so many other changes now, for the foreseeable future there is no longer a song called 'God Save The Queen'. As a boy in Canada in the 60's, we sang it every morning in school. Unless many unforeseen things happen there won't be another British queen for at least many decades to come. Rest in Peace to our Queen Elizabeth II and .......God Save the King.

Well i believe this culture reminds the world of our ancient history as mankind, it establishes a bond, a linkage between past and present. In this uncertain moment around the globe something like this should be nurtured . But not every nation every country has the history or the capacity to carry something like this . Brits has it . Let them nurture it and let us admire . For all of us common man and woman we should bear in our mind that.....being common is easy but being a monarch and carrying it is mllion times harder. Being a monarch is not "a million times harder" than being a commoner, if it were then the royals wouldn't be so picky about who marries who in the family, nor would they keep their power soley inside the family. Remember the UK is a constitutional monarchy not a totalitarian monarchy, these people carry the money and tradition of being royals but don't really have much of a say in politics. Basically just filthy rich celebrities.

Maybe on video, it does not look very much, but this is what many people used to do in the past. I haven't sang in a choir since I was a child.. for so many years... but yes, I also paid my respect and attended some services in my local church. I think many people are in mourning. Shocked. Upset. I don't think people realises how much this is quite a big issue... During the first lockdown, many brass bands came out to play, around the Christmas time. I knew knew in my gut that something was quite wrong. And the speech... was something that she did not used to say. I just knew that something awful is happening here... The lockdown has gone on for two years.. and now Russia has invaded. The British army came out of Afghanistan... and some have gone on to fight in Ukraine... I think, many people are shocked. @Inere Kazu That's not entirely true about Japan. Many records were lost in the 1400s so a lot of Japanese history before that point is more myth than fact. Japan may have a single running bloodline but proving it is a different matter. England itself is at most 1200 years old and Britain is only around 300 years after the act of Union. England of 1000 years ago is very different to the Britain of 300 years ago to which we are most closely related.

I was 16. To finally see a king be throned is something I never thought I would. Long now has the monarchy been a unique and often unheard source of ruling, and in which such a lady at work, her majesty, had been...shall we now have a stable and wealth in economy and survival enough for her son to take the throne and hopefully have little issue in keeping the pride of Britain, a noble and moreover generous one. They wen't through so much hardship in the 1940's on top of the great depression... The queen represented what a queen was in the past, rebuilt society and listened to every long since taken ruler and citizen, on their opinions. Reminds me of when Eisenhower's inauguration, a man mostly against war and hostility, rather providing needs for the people and for ingenuity, a bright future that the world was looking toward by 1953-4.

@Matias D.C "Do the Math, connect the Dots"?! How about "Do some Research and learn the Facts"? It has nothing to do with any Sort of "They wanted her out". That´s plain Tinfoil-Hat Bullshit. These Ceremonies weren´t planned month Ago. They are part of "Operation London Bridge" better known as "London Bridge is down". This specific Plan regulates what has to happen in which Order, when the Queen dies, including Ceremonies, Proclamations, the Lying-in-State and the Burial. Operation London Bridge was established in the 60´s, and not a few Month ago. Also, neither the Country nor the Commonwealth can be without a Leader, therefor they have to "Rush" the Proclamation of a new One. Yes, Charles automatically became King at the exact Second his Mother died, but it still has to be officially/formally Proclaimed anyways.

@Matias D.C bud, I recommend you study the Bible before throwing out asinine statements like what you've just said. These plans have been in the works for years. Do you really think the Brits expected Queen Elizabeth to live forever? Also, God is a proper noun, you blabbering fool. Silence yourself and your foolish thoughts. No one poisoned the Queen, and God doesn't ask us to sacrifice our firstborn son.

@Matias D.C nah like its ridiculous how much their life revolves around the responsibility for the crown, I think like most, if not all things related to the queen private life, they kept it quiet because that's generally tradition for security, so I think they knew she was on the end of things and had put the proper plans in place for there to be a monarch properly crowned with ceremony, which is the binding act, almost like the legal requirement, without it all, there's no monarch, idk if that's so important these days but it might be and it at least was important to have a valid and "legal" head of state at all times to make decisions. It's pretty callous tbh, but there's no real power to gain from offing someone these days, just more invasion in privacy and more security and basically mandatory appearances without much or any political sway. There's even laws against it. It's a job, basically, long story short, it's a business and it needs to keep moving, basically the fundamentals to their country, the English equivalent of the constitution.
@yskwong

@Matias D.C It's the tradition of every Kingdom to crown their next monarch immediately after the death of their existing monarch. The reason is so as to not have any other members of the family fighting over the throne. Once a monarch is declared, he'd have absolute power, and nobody could fight for it till he/she is dead.
@chrismc410
@chrismc410 2 жыл бұрын
@Matias D.C that's how it works. As stated, the moment the preceding monarch is pronounced dead, the heir apparent/heiress presumptive ascends immediately. It's not required but is often said when this happens: "The King/Queen is dead. Long live the King/Queen."
