On Saturday Britain cheered its first new monarch in 70 years, when King Charles III was officially crowned at a ceremony in Westminster Abbey before 2,000 guests and a worldwide television audience. As Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, assume the throne, correspondent Mark Phillips reports on how much - and how little - the monarchy has changed since the last coronation in 1953.

Polly seems like a real fun person to hang out with. Hey Polly! The British coronation has existed for nearly 1,000 years and typically happens once in a viewer's lifetime, sometimes twice. The fact that humans have been able to record it down, photograph it, film it, and later televise it, is astonishing. It is something to be seen and appreciated and not relegated to a museum.

I think it's beautiful to keep traditions alive and I think this King will do what he can to modernize and be inclusive as he has throughout his legacy with creating The Princes Trust and advocacy for the environment. It's to say that I personally - and only speaking for myself- find it nice to have a Monarch who only has soft power and upholds tradition to maintain consistency and stability in a world with so much abrupt change, corruption and lifelong politicians who while they might be elected are often impotent in their role. That was why the Queen was so beloved because she was always there and didn't complain or explain and did a lot of good for the world through charity and forming the Commonwealth which is a voluntary group of countries that are involved. You would never see so much adoration in the streets for US Politicians or likely other countries. It's a nice thing to see. Americans judge but it's not their country and as long as the majority of British people want it - it's none of our business.

Queen Camilla is afforded to have her companions (formerly ladies in waiting) who served during the coronation to stand with her on the balcony. Queen Elizabeth did the same during her coronation.

Placeholder? You seem to be forgetting that Queen Elizabeth II lived to be 96. Prince Philip died just shy of his 100th birthday. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother lived to be 101. If Charles inherited the longevity genes, he could easily have a 20-year reign ahead of him. That would be a very long reign for a "placeholder"!

Maintaining the monarchy keeps alive a living thread of history dating back a 1000 years and beyond, a continuity of ritual which is a rare and curious thing in our world. That would be lost if people like Penny got her way. It looked cheap. The colors were off on all the new page uniforms. Way too orange in the red. Should have had blue in it. The blue in the family robes was off too. No flowers or trees in the church. British uniforms and robes are always scarlet, not crimson. The blue in the Garter robes is navy blue, the blue in the Royal Victorian Order robes is a more primary blue, but both were determined long before this Coronation. However, the blue and yellow of the carpet and the blue horses' manes were too harsh, I think. Flowers and trees would have been a nice touch, I agree.
