The Genius of Charles James: Charles James is often considered America's first couturier. His tailored suitings and sculpted gowns were influenced by his Edwardian childhood and each piece was considered a work of art. The 1982 Brooklyn Museum tribute, hosted by Halston, presented some of the lavish ball gowns for which James is best remembered.

I also collect the Moddess because ads of Charles James gowns. That's where I first discovered him as a child in the 50's. They are sold on Ebay accounts.

I knew Charles James in the early seventies while I lived at the Chelsea Hotel as Charles did also. He had two studio apartments on the seventh floor, one as his bed sitting room and the other as his studio which had the most amazing three dimensional patterns suspended from the ceiling. He would have me up nights telling me the most amazing stories. He also told me of his loathing for Halston who he claimed robbed him of his designs for the first Halston collection. Charles said I was supposed to be a collaboration and Halston had promised Charles the designs would carry the label Shaped By Charles James but Halston did not live up to the promise.
