Houstonian here. The Menil, the museum built by the De Menils after they had produced many excellent shows with other Houston institutions, is extremely strong in Surrealism.

What a source of knowledge! The fashion industry was (is) a scary place made only for the toughest talent.

There was a very interesting story in Vanity Fair (in the 90s maybe?) about Charles James. It detailed, as was mentioned here, how it would take him a year to deliver a dress and sometimes he would sell it to another person. It also mentioned how he would redo a sleeve over and over - 100 times say. Or how he would deliver a dress and then go to the customer's home a month later and repossess it to redo the bust line. In my opinion, he suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder along with a bit of Narcissism. Not a beneficial combination. I truly believe he was not mentally well - which explains why he could never get along with anyone.

Yes.the interviewer did a excellent job but Michelle you can't hear her she drags her words, very irritating to listen to her.

I find this to be nice, informative and interesting. After reading the earlier (negative) comments, I almost didn't watch it, but I'm glad I did.

Wasn’t Schiaparelli Marissa Behrensens great grandfather? Or great uncle? I believe she was related somewhere?... and as for wrapped dresses? What about Diane Von Furstenberg??? I thought she was the first...?????

I thought of her too. People can have the same idea it's just who gets it out fastest. Notice his wraps to the right ( male)

Claire McCardell had wrap dresses before Diane Von Furstenberg. Claire got the idea from seeing traditional clothing worn by South East Asian people.

Great information so thank you!!! Otherwise editing of this video is embarrassing, Valerie is dressed like she is in her 30 s while the cameraman could have made a little effort to 'cover' too much botox going south for Michelle.

This is a very boring presentation on a very exciting and dynamic coutourier. Too bad. Recommend video Sunday at the Met: Glamour and Charles James. It is much better.

This is a very interesting lecture entitled Portrait of an Unreasonable Man, which covers his relationship with friends, sponsors and clients. We all know about his talents as a 'coutourier` this talk highlights a different aspect of the man. The clue is in the title.
