here is something else everybody who don't know, Charles was the out front person that helped save Billy Higgins life when he needed a transplant the first & 2nd time. A good brother who don't look for headlines, just helping to keep the legacy alive by staying in jazz after a long hiatus. a real unsung player too

That's right, Bob. Nothing has changed in 14 plus years since your post. Charles is Lloyd. Amazing creativity, only few in the Jazz scene know, IMHO.

two absolute monsters of subtlety. the way they ride those moments with their ears so wide open. billy higgins' passing was a huge loss for humanity. but, here and in so many touches to skin and metal he teaches us how to be honest, how to pour out just enough and how to scoop up just enough to make the oceans of the heart right. seeing this is blessing, friends.

I used to see Billy Higgins all the in NYC in the 90s. It seemed like he was on every gig. I wish to god I appreciated him then as much as I do now.

mr. billy higgins. always a bright light. smilin' billy. when he'd walk through leimert park he'd bring the light. show up at the world stage any time of day or nite and he'd play. one time i was playing alto-clarinet at the world stage by myself for several hours. then billy walked in and we played a duet for about 20 minutes. man, listen: the feeling. this cat just fills up with warmth the support, love and encouragement. really he is an embodiment of joy.

This was sooo cool. I love this video. I seen Billy back in 96. Some place he had young drummers come up and play. In la of course. I even had to go up and play. Lots of pressure! It was sort of like a drum dedication to Tony Williams at the time due to the passing of Tony. Then when everyone got there turn, Billy came on, started with one of those hand drums, looked like a tambourine, but no jingles or anything like that. Then he went on to the drum kit. This whole thing was killer! What a guy

I saw Billy many times and as a 10 year resident of Leimert Park, I had the privilege of seeing him in the Village from time to time. He was at the end of his life here, but look at the joy and the power of his playing. He will always be my favorite jazz drummer, on the jazz drummer mount rushmore for all time. Saw Charles Lloyd too, not a Coltrane, Dolphy, Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Athur Blythe or Jackie McClean...yet one of the premier players of his generation. Lovely, lovely stuff! Thank you Charles, and RIP and God keep you Billy Higgins!

Danielle speaks of the musical bond. . .reminded me of the first time I saw Charles playing at Yoshi's in Oakland. Must have been shortly after Billy's death; Charles spoke of Billy and cried and spoke and cried and rambled. This is a precious video recording.

1985-The Willow Jazz Club Somerville, MA. Alan Dawson lent Billy a Remo pre-tuned drumset- it looked like a toy! John Lockwood-Bass, John Medeski-Piano, the Holiday brothers who were teenagers, on horns. NBC was filming it. I sat right next to Billy all night-his playing was so quiet, but burning and telepathic. The club owner asked if we wanted them to keep playing after hours. Everyone cheered! The NBC guy turned off his camera and they played till 3:30-4:00 in the morning.

If you go to the Charles Lloyd web site ( address cannot be posted here, but try the obvious web address for charles lloyd - you can email the info address and find out how to order it.

I guess you could contact NBC Nightly News archives. It was on a day or two later when they featured Christopher Holiday, then a 14 year old sax prodigy who sounded like Charlie Parker. I caught the tale end of the program with Billy Higgins smiling, and swinging away. Or maybe you could could contact Christopher Holiday. Anyway, I'm sure it exists somewhere...

Stop! you embarrassing your self. Charles would be the first to say the same. he is inflenced heavily by trane as many were of his era. I have seen lloyd since he was in cannonball' & Chico Hamilton's group, I was a budding 13 year old sax player in LA. he use to teach at Gompers jr high in Watts, went to USC for his masters degree. by 1966 Lloyd was into his own group and never looked back.

So What if you lived in a person's neighborhood, it doesn't make you a expert on Jazz. are you a musician? do you know music?? You can't hide behind a blanket statement as , Lloyd would wipe the floor with Trane. Trane is dead but they're still trying to figure out some of his innovative approches to improvisation. where is your proof, or theory. sounds like you still haven't grown up. I only mention about Lloyd's humanitarian character and you say i'm still in the 60s??? break it down Betbowt!!
