Nice. Jack and Keith are so young and so good transitioning and transporting from jazz to free moving the past forward. Thanks!

It’s not like they didn’t get recognition, but this group should be recognized as one of the GREAT quartets. An instantly recognizable sound, exploring new territory, with virtuosic musicians.

Outstanding! If you want a more "inside" version of this lovely waltz called" Song my lady sings", check out the youtube clip by Cannonball Adderley, which also features Charles Lloyd. It is wonderful too, albeit in a different way. I imagine it was only recorded a year or so before this version.

Jack and Keith were the catalysts of this band and it shows here. That's why they're still playing together with Gary Peacock. Keith is burning on this waltz.

Damn -- he could always play like crazy -- but he has grown a lot too (Keith). He wouldn't play this kind of solo today, would he? He can still play as fast as anyone would ever want, but he seems completely unhurried when he does it --- he finds his time, owns the groove -- here he is sort of playing on top of the music rather than inside it. But you could never accuse him of that today. Genius.

Yeah, Jarrett sometimes suggests he invented his own style out of nothing, no precedents But it's quite easy to hear the ENORMOUS influence of Evans, esp on a waltz The phrasing is quite similar, and often identical. a lot of the licks too.

If you think Evans could ever play like this then you have absolutely no idea what you’re on about.

if your mind cannot process the information quickly enough, or if the harmonies are too dense for you to parse, then that is a pity. You may hear only a spray of staccato notes, and deem them randomly, or carelessly chosen, but believe me, they are neither. As Joe Pass answered when asked how he could play so fast "you have to have a quick mind" Early exposure to complex in the household can prepare you for it. A child's mind easily grasps complexities and allows the adult mind to enjoy classical or jazz or raga or whatever. Music this dense harmonically and rhythmically will be difficult to grasp or enjoy without some preceding exposure. Growing up on German polkas, and cheesey pop music, I didn't have a taste for this music until well into my 20's, and even then I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this music. "too many notes and the notes are too dark". Now in my 60's, after learning a bit of jazz and blues piano, and listening to , first jazzy and bluesy pop(Hendrix, Steely Dan, Chicago, BST) and then blues, and then accessible "jazz" Louis Armstrong, Les McCAnn, Ella Fditzergerald, and then Miles, and then Jarrett and Coltrane et al.... I can finally enjoy it. But sometimes , it's still too many notes. too dense for my little, slow brain cheers

The notes will have more meaning if you know the song, the melody, if you can follow the form of the song. Look for a simpler version of this song, and then come back later. It may make sense to you then. Someone above recommended a version by Cannonball Adderly and Charles Lloyd. There are surely even simpler versions by vocalists.
