The news def hit me like a truck. This man voiced the protagonist of my favorite game franchise for over 27 years. Without him, Mario wouldn't have been as charming to me as he was when I 1st played SM64 all those years ago. But, tbh, it was gonna happen eventually. You could already hear his voice acting being different for characters like Luigi in Mansion 3 as his voice changed due to age. He will truly be missed, and I hope he lives a happy and peaceful life in the years that follow. On the bright side, the replacement for Mario ( Even if they are temporary or not ), sound extremely well in SMBWonder! I honestly thought that was Charles at 1st, just that he sounded different from age, but damn, boy was I wrong. I hope whoever it is voicing Mario sticks around, cause he did a phenomenal job! Glad to see the torch being passed down to another great VA who will do justice to my boy and bring smiles onto children who love Mario!

Well, we most likely already heard the voice of Mario’s new actor in the trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, back when we thought it could’ve still been Charles. Whoever he is, he was able to perfectly sound like Charles’ Mario voice that you could hardly tell the difference. I’d say we could be in good hands.

When I saw him trending on Twitter I thought he passed. Thank the stars that wasn't the case. I'm a little sad, but at the same time I knew this was inevitable. He couldn't voice Mario forever, someone else had to take the reins eventually. I wish him nothing but the best going forward. The new voice actor, or actors are doing a good job, and I feel Charles left the Mario series in good hands.

It still makes me smile to this day whenever I heard Charles's ecstactic "NIIIIIN-TENDOOO - WOHOO!" as Nintendo-logo on Mario Double Dash's booted up. Alongside that, Wario's silver age in the 2000s was also heralded by EXCELLENT(-a) quips and grunts from Charles. He truly made my most favorite Nintendo-protagonist of all time, such a legend. I simply adore the interviews or quotes he made whenever you could meet Mario in his virtual booths too - the favorite one still is the entirety of Mario Sports Mix's Interview Video with Mario driving the whole show. Can't also forget his little parody on the iconic Darth Vader meeting Lukey from Star Wars. It's really hard to sum up just how much Charles shaped Mario to such lovable, radiantly jolly star to this very day - being part of millions upon millions childhoods and families, and being such a good man himself - some of his anecdotes or inspirations to how he'd portray Mario are just so heartwarming and quite close to these little moments in real life - Mario's and Luigi's italian gibberish were inspired by his young nieces doing the same kind of thing. All I can say is, I wish him the very best onward - and from bottom of my heart, thank him for being the world's no.1 Favorite Plumber and Star of Video-Games for so long. Whoever's gonna take his mantle is gonna have pretty tough shoes to fill - but hearing them in Wonder is making me feel relatively confident they'll adapt pretty quickly. I hope to meet Charles someday myself while he's still around - hopefully he'll do a trip to Finland someday where I can catch him in middle of wandering around in Helsinki Central as I did with Don Rosa more than a half decade back.

Honestly I should've seen it coming but I chose not to believe the theories that sprung up after the previous Nintendo Direct. I'm fine with the new sounding Mario so far. The new Wario sounds weird but Charles' Wario already started sounding weird in Warioware Gold and Get It Together although that could've been chalked up to a different approach due to speaking full sentences as him in those two games.

I heard some suspicions of Mario’s voice actor changing and I thought his voice sounded slightly different myself. I’m pleasantly surprised Charles Martinet isn’t retiring or anything, but this is a sad change for me and does feel like the end of an era with Nintendo. So much has been changing already since the release of the Nintendo Switch and especially since the release of the Mario movie from earlier this year, and this completely seals it for me that Charles Martinet is stepping into a new role and leaving room for new voice actors to fill in for our favorite plumber.

While I have faith in Nintendo finding a good replacement, I'm still gonna miss the original. Charles was a big factor in bringing charm to Mario and some other characters. It's hard to tell if this was Charles' decision or not (maybe the guy wanted to retire). But either way they're respecting him. Also they're paying respect to his voice by having voice lines sound similar. (I wouldn't be upset if they had good creative reasons for wanting to change up the voices while still respecting the old versions)

He is a huge part of my childhood. The reason I got into Mario was because of plush videos I would want on this platform and also those old Flash games I would play when I was little. It almost feels like a piece of my childhood is gone now..... But I know it's not. And even though I knew this was gonna happen someday, I didn't expect it to happen so soon. I don't think anyone did. The upside of this though is that he will be travelling the world and sharing his journey of voicing the titular character. So that feels a bit uplifting at least. Nonetheless, Charles Martinet will always have a special place in the hearts of his fans. Thank you for filling our childhoods with great memories to look back on. We will certainly miss our Mario 🫂

My speculation behind this was the fact that maybe they wanted Charles Martinet to do a new voice direction for Mario in SMBW to fit the wackiness behind it all. That's why I didn't want to jump into conclusions until we did get official news if it was true that Charles was stepping down on voicing Mario.

Without question that it'll be strange to not have Charles Martinet to no longer be voicing the Mario Bros, Wario, Waluigi, etc. But, as with life; there are beginnings and ends. This is certainly an end of an era. But we shouldn't be sad, we should be happy. Charles would want that. I'm really curious to see how the aforementioned characters would sound like with new voice actors.

I remember everyone was saying people were overthinking it when people speculated Charles wasn’t voicing the new games, but it looks like it really isn’t. Though people are acting like he’s retiring from voice acting. He could very well return as Mario’s father if needed as they did specify Mario’s game lines

I don’t think it’ll be hard to come to terms with the new VA’s voice in the games themselves since they’re already doing such a stellar job that the Nintendo community was confused as to whether it was Charles or not in the Wonder trailer originally, so we’re in good hands for sure there’s nothing to worry about there, it’s the legacy and iconography that’s the tough pill to swallow because in concept it’s hard to imagine Mario without Charles voicing him, it just feels weird, he’s still kind of the face of Mario so I’m glad he’s still an Ambassador and that he’ll still be around, it’s just gonna feel odd

A truly heartbreaking end of an amazing Era. I literally grew up with Mario for 35 years. Played Mario games since I was 2 my parents told me and Charles voicing Mario is what inspired me to do all my voice impressions and voice acting. Him stepping down is very bittersweet but at least he can finally relax. Hopefully I meet him someday. My lifelong dream still hasn't come true to meet my childhood hero Charles Martinet. At this point I doubt it'll ever happen

When I first heard the news of Charles's leave of voicing the Mario cast, I have to admit that I was a bit saddened by it, even though like many others have said, I knew it was inevitably going to happen sooner or later. It really is a testament to how irreplaceable Charles Martinet's voice is when people pointed out that Mario and Wario sounded a bit off in Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Wario Ware: Move It! respectively. It shows me that no one can voice those characters quite like Charles can. However, I'm ultimately satisfied with everything Charles contributed to the Mario series through his work, and I'm happy that he can move on from voicing the Mario cast after all these years. It's nice to know that he still wants to be involved with Mario in some way, and I wish him the best going forward. As for whoever voices the Mario cast going forward, I wish them the best in their endeavors and I hope they give their all and are given a fair shot by the fans.

If it weren't for Charles, It was Martinet who made Mario into the joyful, friendly, and energetic character we know now. It was Martinet who defined the personalities of not just Mario, but also Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. I knew Charles would leave eventually, but I didn’t expect it to be so soon... I'm glad Nintendo and Charles seem to be on good terms with Charles becoming the "Mario Brand Ambassador", but I do hope that this was HIS choice and not Nintendo's. As you said, it's very common for video game VAs, but I'd say we both agree that is, in fact, bad that there's very few VAs for iconic characters that have been around so long, with Mario being the most iconic. He IS Mario. Truly the end of an era, and I think it's going to be a bizarre world. Like...just imagine, Smash 6 probably won't have Charles's Mario voice unless they reuse his voice clips. That's nuts. I got to meet him at a con last year, and I'm glad I got to do it while he was still Mario's VA. He's truly a legend. That said, I'm sure his successor(s?) will do a good job. It's not going to be the same though. As far as "will we find out exactly what the cause of the change was?", I think MAYBE if Charles Martinet gets a book written or something. When Nintendo release this video, even if he says "Oh it was time to move on blah blah", that's a corporate video, and people are 'encouraged' to retire all the time. And with Charles's positive energy, I doubt he'd express sadness in the video anyway. In this case, IF Nintendo were pushing him to retire from the role, I'm sure they were very respectful about it knowing how beloved he is, and I really doubt Charles is going to be the type of guy who'd badmouth them if this is what happened since it's not like they totally disrespected him by uninvolving him from the franchise. Not trying to push any conspiracies here, just that...you know, there are ways these sorts of things are navigated both socially and business-wise that are going to make it hard to tell if statements made can be taken at face value. Ultimately, I'm not sure if we'll ever know exactly what the dynamic was. I can only hope it was Charles's choice, because if it wasn't, that'd truly be heartbreaking even if he was upbeat about it. But regardless, he's getting the respect and admiration he deserves from the fans.

It was inevitable, and I’m just glad it appears to be a peaceful decision and not one forced out of some necessity like firing or God forbid a death. 30+ years of a legend, I couldn't ask for more. I was already under heavy suspicion as to if Charles wasn't voicing Mario from the Direct so the full confirmation doesn't surprise me. That being said, I am very sad about his departure. Mario as a whole is the has a lot of legacy voice acting with a lot of characters having set in stone voices since the Gamecube and part of that is due to Charles giving so many iconic voices. I wish him the best as Mario ambassador and I welcome the new guy(s) with open arms. It'll take some getting used to but from I've heard, at worst it's a tiny bit off and at best it's nearly indistinguishable. It's why I said I was suspicious rather than certain.

I thought Teaches Typing 2 was when VAing was added, making 64 the first voice? 4:40 That IS nice, but it also REALLY stings that he didn't get to voice his OWN character in a cinematic experience. At all. I was hoping that they've have Mario embrace his Wahoo Yahoo voice in the sequel since he'd be more accomodated with the wacky Mushroom Kingdom but now it's like, what's the point? It just feels like a major disservice overall to have the happy-go-lucky plumber we know replaces with a Mario who honestly has a decent arc but NOT a fitting personality. I feel like Mario was made more rude in the movie to make him more like, standard? Like, Charles' Mario would be like, "Yes, this is Toad, he helped me get in!" and stuff but Chris Pratt's voice direction is all like "Nah just have him not even thank Toad for his help, treat Toad like he doesn't exist". It's not even the same character, which weakens his arc! He's all like "Man, people think I'm a joke" but it's not like he sounds particularly wacky outside of when he's actively trying to which goes against his arc for that very reason. Charles' Mario sounds like a goofy cartoon character, of course people would think he's a joke, it just makes MORE sense even if the voice is toned down or something! The situation is just, bleck. 6:07 He's passable in the way that you can watch the movie and mostly forget about him, but by the standards of Mario his voice is just so plain, which is something it's not supposed to be. hey now we haven't heard luigi and waluigi they could still be bad and we haven't heard much wario at all. And uh... Wow I just realized, even if Waluigi is in Wonder he never got to be in a mainline role while voice by Charles. UGH. 7:37 EXACTLY. Thus why it's such a terrible move to have him not voice Mario in the Mario Movie. Like, if he did a slightly higher pitched version of Mario's Dad's voice it would've just been a strictly better version of Chris Pratt.
