Great video! Mutual funds or 100% C Fund TSP? Both Roth IRA. Which would be more beneficial in the long run?
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark! "Just my opinion" ... but what people should be doing is putting in enough money to their ROTH side TSP to get the government matching amount (which has to go in the traditional TSP side). Do 100% C Fund for everything. After getting the matching amount, you should be trying to max out your private ROTH IRA which is $6,000 a year. Just do 100% a S&P 500 index fund in your ROTH IRA. If you have more in your budget to put in retirement accounts, then go back to your ROTH TSP. That's my plan.
@markpepin3003
@markpepin3003 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the speedy reply! Unfortunately I do not get matching TSP, I didn’t opt into the BRS. I’m in the High-3 but I plan on doing 20yrs. Isn’t the C fund pretty much the S&P 500? Why get a mutual fund if TSP C fund does the same thing and what are the benefits? Also do you prefer Vanguard over TD Ameritrade? Thanks Capt! Great content!
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
@@markpepin3003 , I personally have a Vanguard and Charles Schwab account, I prefer the user experience of Schwab. Additionally, Charles Schwab now owns TD Ameritrade, so I would just recommend you go with Schwab. The advantages of a personal ROTH IRA over your Gov TSP are a couple. Most among them is you have complete control over your investments, where the TSP only gives you 5 basic funds to choose from. Additionally, any principal you put in to a ROTH IRA is already taxed, so you can take it out at anytime. Anything you earn inside the account has to stay there until you retire, but a ROTH IRA is basically the world's best savings account. It is just your TSP with more control and more flexibility. I made a video about the ROTH IRA, check it out! kzbin.info/www/bejne/oX6an4mCYpd9l5I

I have 50/50 in SCHD and SCHB.. what else should I add to my portfolio The top ten holdings of SCHD: Pepsi/ups/cocoa cola/ Verizon /3m etc. Schb includes: Apple/Microsoft/Facebook/google/Johnson and Johnson/proctor and gamble etc.. What are your thoughts There are just so much out there and these two funds cover a lot so I’m thinking about what I’m missing (other than international etf but not interested in adding that ) Just looked into SCHG: holds almost 50% in technology so weight heavy in Apple/Tesla/ Microsoft/netflix..I mean this is a growth etf so wondering if I should add this one

Great video! Have you considered an in-depth review of auto advisors, including schwab's intelligent portfolios?
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Nelson! I think eventually I will have to make a video about auto advisors. I made one for Morgan Stanley and trashed it for its high fees, but I generally do not see the point of using them. Even if the service is free (like with Schwab), I think anyone under 55 is better off just putting 100% of any money they have (that they won't need in less than a 3 year period) in an S&P 500 index Fund (like SWPPX). Almost every auto advisor I've seen ends up buying some bonds or international stocks and I just don't see the point of buy and hold investors doing that for an extended period of time. If people want to invest for the short term, then they can buy a Bond ETF (like BND). If they are buy and hold for the long term, then should just do an S&P 500 index fund. Just my thoughts. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey Jake! So I have a question about investing in international stocks 11:50 . I am an USAF Officer (92T0 - pilot trainee) and I already have a Top Secret Security Clearance. I believe you mentioned in other videos that you are a missileer, so I'm guessing you also have a TS. Are we able to invest in international stocks? I heard somewhere that there were certain rules about us officers with TS not being able to invest in international stocks. Maybe I'm wrong, can you clarify this? Thanks!
@JakeBroe

Hey Sergio! I honestly do not know this. I currently am not invested in any international stocks, so I have not considered this. I know we cannot be invested in cannabis stocks since it is illegal on the federal level. This is honestly a question for your unit's security manager. They would know for sure one way or the other. I would assume it is fine as long as you disclose it on your SF86 form when you renew your TS. Cheers!

Tyree I’m 24 and have Schwab and Fidelity. I would personally stay away from target day funds. I feel they’re too conservative and too cookie cutter for my taste. I just opened a Roth IRA with Charles Schwab and am considering investing in the S&P 500. Is there really not a right time to invest? There’s so much going on with COVID-19 and elections coming up... this is all going to affect the market in some way. Is there anything in particular about a funds performance to look for when deciding to invest?
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chelsey! If you buy something and sell it in less than a year, then you are a trader. If you buy something and hold it for multiple years, then you are an investor. I really do believe that "time in the market beats timing the market." So if you are looking to make a quick dollar by jumping in and out of the market, I can't guarantee you anything in the age of COVID. But if you buy a simple low cost index fund and hold it at least for a couple years, i guarantee you won't regret it.

So what would you recommend a split should be if someone is investing the max 6,000 a year to a roth ira? 60% swppx, 30%swagx, 10%swisx? Just wondering what you think
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tamarcus! I just go 100% SWPPX for myself. I do not both with small caps, bonds, or international stocks. I am well-diversified across 500 successful American companies and feel secure buying and hold the S&P long term. But, if you want to include some international, that is fine. However, I do not recommend holding ANY bonds in a retirement account where your investment horizon is decades. Cheers!

@JakeBroe

You can! Professional advisors will tell you to invest something in international stocks. I personally do not because American companies are so dominant around the world right now. Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Netflix are all global brands. So I feel like I am still getting international exposure from just the US total stock market index.

@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Troy! If you are looking to put $10,000 in to something and hold it long term (5+ years), then I absolutely recommend mutual funds. The S&P 500 mutual fund over the long run averages 9.8% a year. If you bank with Schwab and want to buy their fund, it is SWPPX.

While I agree That Schwab actively managed funds aren't very good, they offer several thousand other mutual funds that are fee free. Using the Schwab Fund Screener, you can filter out all the funds that aren't Morningstar 5 Star top performers. From there you can see which ones look like the best of the best. Almost of my funds with Schwab are actively managed funds that have beaten their respective indices over the last 5-10+ years. Since they are in IRAs, I don't worry about the possible tax disadvantages.
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Flint! I haven't really looked in to ALL the possible mutual funds from other banks you can buy with your Schwab account. I would just assume Schwab would charge a hefty to fee on all those purchases to discourage people from buying their competitors mutual funds. I'll check out the screener!

@@JakeBroe They wave the purchase fee and any front load on around 4,000 OneSource funds. They will charge a $50 fee if you try to sell them before holding them 90 days though. Vanguard and Fidelity funds are not free since they are two of Schwab's biggest competitors.

Excellent explanation and presentation. I've been doing something similar for the last few years with automatic withholds and dollar income averaging. Currently I've come into a little money from an inheritance. I'm trying to decide with the market near an all time highs how to move this into my accounts? I'm older and nearing retirement although I probably don't need to touch any of these funds for at least 5 years. You can't time the market but it is near all time highs? Don't worry my decisions are always my own I never blame anyone for actions I decide to take.. I'm thinking either dump it all in or increase my monthly purchases. Any thoughts?
@JakeBroe
@JakeBroe 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Stan! I don't know how much you have recently acquired in inheritance. But I would probably dollar cost average in to the market with it 10% each month over the next 10 months. If there is any kind of flash crash and the market loses over 10/20%, then I would probably move it all in. You are right we are at all time highs, but in the long run it doesn't matter. Time in the market always beats timing the market on a long enough investing horizon. Good luck!

@@JakeBroe Thanks Jake. It's not enough to quit my day job but everything adds up after awhile. I do keep some powder dry in a Vanguard money market account and when the S&P 500 drops below the the 200 day moving average I increase my monthly deposit a little in VTSAX. So far that seems to have a 1 to 2 percent yearly increase in my return. I may just be getting lucky or my calculations may be off. Since it's the end of the year a video on how you do your rebalancing might be interesting. Glad I found your channel this year, I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy (and prosperous) New Year.
