I have literally watched an lp, let's play of the Chrono trigger series with a KZbin gamer. And it was amazing just hearing the music, with some of the texts of the visual novels being read of the game, and it was just really good. Even the court music, the guardians theme, Zeo Kingdom which you just touched, and a lot of the music from this game is really good. Now, unfortunately, you couldn't get to the track called singing mountain, because it was unused. It was in the game's code, but went unused in the game itself. Singing mountain had this really good thing for Chrono trigger music as well, and it was good. The chord changes and everything went really good. So if you would like to, you can go a little more in-depth in the singing mountain. Which like I said, was in the game's code, but went unused.

Yasunori Mitsuda's story on how he became the composer for Chrono Trigger is amazing. He wanted to compose music so bad, that he told his boss if he doesn't get to make music for a game, he would quit his job. They gave him the opportunity to work on Chrono Trigger, and it became one of the best, if not best, video game sound tracks of all time.

In many regards, Chrono Trigger had a dream team working on it. You had Sakaguchi as director, two unsurpassed titans on the soundtrack, the late Toriyama doing character designs and Tetsuya Nomura doing the background art. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but with such talent it would have been hard to make a less than stellar game.

@@BeastOfSodaYou are not wrong but throwing top talent at a problem and expect it to be resolved is naive at best. Nothing is guaranteed and rock stars are notoriously difficult to bring into a choir 🙂 Still for CT they made an awesome game, that we agree on!
@BeastOfSoda
@BeastOfSoda 3 ай бұрын
@@wertigontrue enough, do remember however that these fine folks had already worked together: AT was doing art for Dragon Quest all the way back in the mid eighties, while the others were all Squaresoft with several successful SNES games under their belts. I mean, if they made any more drastic decisions, like for example handing directorial duties to a younger Nomura, I could see it going south, but they played it relatively safe (and with a homerun of a game to show for it).

I’m a gamer and musician for over 30 years. I played CT basically when it came out when I was 10 or so. I have yet to play a game that has had as massive an impression on me as Chrono Trigger and a huge part of that was the score. Before Logic, I downloaded the MIDI files and used my old freeware of a program called Mozart to convert the MIDI tracks into notation. It came out with the tracks not parsed properly so I had to spend probably hours combining the staffs to convert it into usable sheet music, but then I could play the music from Chrono Trigger!!! To this day, when I sit down at a piano, a few of the go-to things I like to play are variations I came up with as developments of CT music.

Chrono trigger is beautiful. I think people forget that games like this may as well have been the equivalent of a novel or gripping tv drama. You get all the action, a fun story, compelling characters, secrets, mystery, drama, and of course, an unforgettable sound track, all in a single game. Of course people can't let go. Is it an easy game? Yes. But it's also a rollercoaster of fun.

You actually hit upon a very important part about video game music from that era. File size mattered a lot so using the fewest number of notes possible in a chord progression was critical in keeping the music compact. These creative limitations highlight even more how awesome chrono trigger is
@virivren
@virivren 2 ай бұрын
It's not so much the filesize, but rather that the sound chip could only handle 8 separate channels at once, so there could not be more than 8 notes simultaneously (including other melodies, percussion, etc.). These channels can change sample on the fly but the amount of different samples that can be fit on the cartridge is definitely determined by file size, lol

That makes me think of how there was only so much room for text on SNES cartridges, so instead of using more dialogue the devs compromised by giving each party member unique sprite animations and their own theme songs to build character. So instead of it being a limitation, they actually flourished under the restraints of the time. It's something a lot of people trying to imitate them just can't seem to grasp.

The most life-changing game ever for me when I was 15 in 1995. It was my first RPG, and really, my favorite game of all time to this day, never to be usurped. I had been a fledgling guitar player for about one year then, so game music mattered more and more over time to me starting around then (FFVI and Uematsu's godly compositions came right after), and Mitsuda's work here is absolutely crystallized as unbeatable. I am beyond biased, and do think of this with emotion and nostalgia glasses. But I can also think about how objectively well-crafted it is and how the music and scenes/moments in the game are not interchangeable. "At the Bottom of Night" for example isn't just aeolian, or minor feeling, or glum. It's absolutely tragic, and hits so unbelievably hard and it stays with you. And it's amazing. That's just one track I picked on impulse. The number of pieces of that caliber in this game is staggering. To think, he was the rookie upstart on the "Dream Team". Seriously, Uematsu put in a few tracks, to help MItsuda when he had worked himself into the hospital, but Yasunori Mitsuda made Yuji Horii, Hironobu Sakaguchi and Akira fucking Toriyama his equals with this one off collaboration. That's immense for first lead on a major project. I remember finding tabs to Wind Scene in the dial-up days and it blowing my mind and opening up yet another new world. Can't say enough. So I'll stop.

The percussion in Schala's Theme is so bonkers, you can tell Mitsuda has an incredible handle on incorporating percussion to benefit the mood instead of just to fill space.

That was fun to watch. I don't know what's better, hearing that music for the first time as a teenager while playing that epic game, or listening to all the incredible covers of those songs today.

I JUST discovered this video and watching you get so excited about music I’ve been listening to for over 2 decades just made my lil old heart explode. My favourite song is Corridors of Time BUT! If you ever do a part two, please include Yearnings of the Wind. It’s such a beautiful piece. Guardia Castle also has some hidden gems within it too! Thanks so much for this! You have a new subscriber! 💙🩵

Have he ever done a video on the original Katamari Damacy? I think that most every song in the original game used rolling or the concept of rolling to complement the action in the game.

Bro, that was too much fun. You should always check video game music out blind. I don't think it's any less of a breakdown and the delight on your face at some of the surprises and changes we're just too priceless. Highly recommend Xenogears for the PS1, to look at.

The Chrono Trigger soundtrack was a collaboration between two absolute titans of the industry. You have the master of melody, Nobuo Uematsu, along with technical genius Yasunori Mitsuda. Even as an eight year old, playing this game for the first time, I knew the music was special. Such a next level soundtrack.

One of my favorite things about this soundtrack is how the character themes really perfectly fit their characters. Frog's theme is bold, strong, heroic, but there's this lingering feeling of sadness in the flute that suits the tragedy that's gotten him where he is. Schala's theme rings and echoes through the long corridors of her home, invoking the image of someone graceful, but also powerful, and once again the oboe betrays a feeling of sadness, like the anticipation of something coming...something inevitable, almost.

Part of this is also the story jumping back and forth through time which I think is highlighted in the recursive themes as well as the ethereal quality of many of the pieces.

To Far Away Times tears me up, Corridors of Time which you listen to is one of my absolute favorites. I always liked The Trial, People Without Hope, The Brink of Time, Delightful Spekkio, Underground Sewer, Battle with Magus, Tyrano Castle and At the Bottom of the Night. Honestly I like it all. Also if you want videos with a bazillion views, do more Chrono Trigger but also Final Fantasy VI. Awesome music, amazing games and quite the large and loyal fanbase.

The haunting track after frog, actually plays during the scene in the video, it is Schala's theme, she is the princess of Zeal and being used as a weapon by her mother. Tragedy is near when her theme plays, but the tragedy of destiny. She is the catalyst for all the events, kinda like Clara Oswold or River Song from Doctor Who.

Im so happy to see you cover this. I think y ou would have fun with the timing changes in some of the Megaman games too. Thanks for covering this. Cheers. Brought back some excitement seeing a musician fall in love with the tracks for the first time like I've loved them forever. Cheers
