This and FF6 were the Golden Age of just storytelling in general. All the films, music and games from the '90s just bring a smile to my face.

Going to start a FF6 playthrough soon. Well, soon by my standards is probably within the next decade, but I'm quite excited about it.

Chrono Trigger had a massive influence on my childhood. I played this game over and over and over again. The music in this game inspired me to learn to play a musical instrument. Even now in my adult life I play covers of Chrono Trigger songs for my 6 month old son as I lull him to sleep at night. Frogs theme is on my "get psyced" playlist. This game is a work of art in every avenue and I wish I could play it again for the 1st time. Thanks for making this review Mr.DLG. looking forward to more content

I'm a huge jrpg fan and I first played CT in 2000. Its been my favorite game ever since and I go back to it almost yearly. Great video, it was interesting to hear the perspective of someone who found jrpgs later in life. I didn't really discover western rpgs until the xbox 360 as I grew up being more of a console gamer than PC, so I love hearing from people with the opposite perspective.

Yeah this one blew me away! It was recommended to me by a friend when I told him I don't play JRPGs because I've just never had that one game that introduced me to the genre. I can confirm without a doubt that it's not just nostalgia, Chrono Trigger really is that good.

Chrono Trigger is without a doubt, the best RPG of all time. Ok, some monsters look really weird and sometimes awful. But the Story, the Characters, the Magic and overall Skillsystem, the Graphics and the Sound/Music are way more than top notch. Even the Playtime is great. It desperately need a Remaster in the Style of Live a Live or Octopath Traveller. Its a shame that square never did a newer title out of the chrono trigger universe. Sure we had Chrono Cross on the PS1, but it was not nearly that good like Chrono Trigger. Don´t know why square behave like this. The Final Fantasy series is ok, but after VII it had fallen down in quality or "loveabilty". Maybe 10 was good, but the others? Not so much. I miss those days of the simple but complex snes rpg´s. Easy to play, but with so huge depth in storyline, combatsystem and exploration. SNES was the primetime of RPG´s. In my opinion, the snes had the best RPG´s of all time. No console comes near its huge RPG Classics library.

Delving into the handheld market since becoming a father and not having time to sit down to play ps5. Collection of Mana on Switch and Chrono Trigger on Steam Deck are the first Jrpgs ice downloaded, played about 5 or so hours (past the first chapter and upto the post apocalyptic future part) and I've been engaged by the story so far. I out it down for a while due to having a newborn and having minimal hours to dabble in less story focused games. But after watching your video I am so keen to jump back into this one. I loved a good head fuck story.

Two cents, CT aged pretty well. It's ideal for middle school reading level, fun friendship adventure, optimistic, fun twists, and extremely good clarity and simplicity. It's not mind-blowingly good or deep by adult standards, but it does what it set out to do and also respects your time with the pacing.

chrono trigger is one of the shortest GOOD jrpgs, if you are just doing the main quest you can complete it in 20 hours easily. If you want another really good JRPG with similar playtime try final fantasy 6, a lot of other games in the genre are a lot longer than chrono trigger.

Oh boy you started your first Japanese RPG with one of the masterpieces of the SNES era but of all time too the other being Final Fantasy 6. There tons more after that such as Suikoden series, Parasite Eve, Dragon Quest series, Persona series too many to name. Looking forward to your final review of Chrono Trigger once you beat it. Are you going to go for more than one ending? My only issue with the PC port is it isn't a complete 1:1. I just noticed there's a 5 minute video you made so after listening to it if you experienced glitches the SNES version didn't have one at least the many times I played it. The bar on the bottom of the characters use to be in the HP and MP box instead. I wish they'd allow a toggle to change that so will have to resort to mods to fix that. I'll also let you know the extras from the Nintendo DS are included and are canon and important to the game's lore and its sequel Chrono Cross. Just a word of warning if you decide on the sequel Chrono Cross don't go into it with the same expectation as Trigger. It's like the Sun and Moon.
@DualLifeGames8 ай бұрын
Chrono Trigger absolutely blew me away. I agree, it's a masterpiece! I'll definitely circle back to it for another playthrough with a different ending, but I'm currently playing Sea of Stars, specifically because it was heavily inspired by Chrono Trigger. Really enjoying that one too. Thanks for the warning about Chrono Cross. I've heard it doesn't quite live up to Trigger.

@@DualLifeGames Ah coo. I'm waiting for the developers of Sea of Stars to stop patching the game so I can play it already and so far last update from early Dec of 2023 so will wait a bit more before jumping in. Like if you beat the boss using the Epoc you can open the old save file and do it again without the Epoc to see a small difference in the ending. There's subtle stuff like that in the canon ending. That depends on who you talk to as from what I've observed that's usually from those who don't understand Cross' story in totality. I understand it and at least with the story it very much stands up to it. Like I wrote before it's like the Sun and Moon. I'm sure you've noticed the (Sun) light heartedness with time travel in Chrono Trigger but you haven't noticed the gaping wound you've opened up by time traveling. Chrono Cross has to deal with that and fix it. The other aspects in the game I kinda would agree it's not like Trigger but it's still fun.
@DualLifeGames8 ай бұрын
Oh ok. I also heard Chrono Cross is getting some more fixes, or has already got some fixes. I'll add it to my new "JRPG's to play" list.

@michaelhgravesjr96088 ай бұрын
You unfortunately suffer from having had to play the PC release. On the original hardware, it was a significantly better experience. The game was absolutely pausable, not only in combat, but in other action scenes (such as the race against Johnny). The graphics were more aesthetically pleasing (not better in the TECHNICAL sense, but way nicer to look at), and getting to experience it in its natural historical moment... yeah. It is definitely a candidate for best JRPG ever, but I would argue it is the uncontested champion in terms of innovation in the genre. No other game represented such a single great leap forward, and many of the conventions of the genre that endure to this day were either pioneered or popularized by CT. For the record, it is definitely possible to finish the main story in under twenty hours. But if you really want to do a deep dive and find all of the hidden stuff in this game and complete all of the side quests, you could just as easily spend 80 on it. Great video, subscribing!
@DualLifeGames8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment and the sub! I actually messed up on the pause point. You can pause, it was just a bit confusing because pausing works differently in and out of combat. We made another video the address my nit picks. I loved playing the game and recognizing mechanics that are commonplace today, and realizing that this CT is nearly 30 years old. Truly a gem!

The sequel to Chrono Trigger, the turn-based Chrono Cross, is a great game by all means, but CC is not a worthy successor to the first one. By the way, why are all the rpg-videos on KZbin only about Japanese rpgs, where are the W- role playing games like Mass Effect, Skyrim and the Witcher?

@DualLifeGames Hey, it's cool. It's pretty common for people who has never played any JRPGs outside of Pokémon and Zelda to be shocked at the average length of those games. I personally got a mini heart attack when I saw my Persona 4 Golden save file had almost 100 hours on it just before I fought the final boss.

The PC port on Steam ***released*** as a terrible and poorly done port, but within like 1 or 2 of the initial port, they made significant changes to the way that it plays such that it is now a ***very*** good port. Honestly, your video looks like you are playing an outdated and most likely pirated version of the game, since I don't think you can even play the version in your video anymore if you purchased it for real. There's nothing wrong with pirating games imo, but in this case you are clearly missing all of the updates that have happened to the game. I stopped watching your review at the point that it became obvious to me that you are ***not*** playing the current version of the PC port because it causes your review to be already outdated. I suggest you buy the game or find a current patch version of the PC port and rerecord your review of the game once you've actually finished it, and you should play it using the current version of the PC port. If anyone sees your review, you will have misinformed them by falsely telling them that the PC port is bad. The PC port has been very good since 1-2 years after release, so your review is literally like 5 years out of date
@DualLifeGames10 ай бұрын
I legitimately bought the game off Steam and it is up to date according to Steam. My intention was not to say that the PC port is unplayable, but simply that the PC version does not do a very good job to communicate the controls to a mouse and keyboard player. I recommend you finish watching the video, because I go on to say that the drawbacks I highlight really are only nit-picks and that the game is absolutely worth playing. Thanks for the comment though. Cheers!
@user-dr3mn1bp1h10 ай бұрын
@@DualLifeGames The port is now, after the initial ~1 year of patches, a very good port though. You're just wrong. It's not a bad port, it's a very good port, and your game in your video looks wrong. The current UI for Chrono Trigger looks very similar to the SNES UI, which is not shown in your video
@DualLifeGames10 ай бұрын
I don't know what to tell you. It's the legit version. My UI settings is set to Mouse/Touchpad. I changed it that way because the keyboard/gamepad settings are even more confusing. I don't know what version you have, but that's mine. I would love to see some gameplay of the version you're talking about. Maybe share a link.
@user-dr3mn1bp1h10 ай бұрын
@@DualLifeGames I think KZbin blocks links in comments most of the time, so I uploaded a video to my channel. It was a terrible port at launch, but it was fixed 4 or 5 years ago. To say that "the PC port was not done very well" is wrong. The controls also cannot be confusing or difficult to figure out, because they're the same as they were on the SNES, and you can also reconfigure them in the menus. Chrono Trigger is also a relatively short RPG in terms of any RPG, really. You can beat it in ~20 hours even on your first playthrough, which is pretty short. You also ***can*** pause the game during combat. I made sure to demonstrate this several times in the video I uploaded. Not only does "Wait" work, but you can also straight up Pause the game. You're just wrong
@DualLifeGames10 ай бұрын
So I'm definitely not one of those who can finish Chrono Trigger in 20 hours. I'm +40 hours in I'm still preparing for the final battle. I watched your video and tested some stuff. The UI changes when you choose mouse/touchpad in the settings. Your settings are on keyboard/gamepad, that's why they look different. And I noticed the pause button, only after realizing that Spacebar is mapped to "Start" function, but to me, "Start" did not equal "Pause" so I didn't make the connection. Thank you for pointing all this out. I'll make a few corrections in my next Chrono Trigger video. I'm sure we can agree it's an awesome game, and I plan sink many hours into it!
