This video breaks my heart. Grew up going to Folly in the 1960s. Most houses were really cottages in the true sense of the word. Gray and weathered, screened in porch, no AC or granite kitchens. Anyone could afford a place at Folly. Then the hurricanes happened and the big money moved in. My dream of living at Folly has long since vanished. A million dollar plus house is not in my budget. The Folly that I knew and loved is gone.

I just moved to Mount Pleasant, SC! I love it there! And I’m nearby to 2 beaches. Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island which are my favorites. My favorite beaches also are Folly Beach, and Kawiah Island! All of those are so beautiful and you wouldn’t be disappointed or dissatisfied with either one of them!

I grew up on Folly Beach in 1950’s There were 2 bad Hurricanes(Hazel and Gracie) in the 1950’s. I lived there in 1954 when Hazel hit SC and NC coastline. (Both were cath 4) It took out the first street with houses. I remember as a child walking on sand with the road peaking through in 1955. All the houses on east end front road were gone. On the other end west side all houses except 2 were gone including the road. Eddie Taylor who I went to school with fixed up the Atlantic house and turned it into a restaurant. I ate there in 1970’s The other house which was in worse shape fell apart. They both set there decades abandoned. The pier was named after Eddie Taylor. I went to the beach a lot in the 1951 - 2001. As a teenager in the 60’s, I would go to the spot where are the surfers were. It was called ‘Wash Out” and the road drop all due the Hurricane Hazel in 1954 not Hugo 1989. This road washed away at that point all the houses and the road on that side. The road on the other side was washed away and all the houses except 2 by Hurricane Hazel in 1954 since I saw it in 1960’s not after Hugo (another cath 4). Many years ago the descendants of property from 1950 were sueing to get the property that washed away with the road.back. It had been front beach property. The houses across the washed out street were now front beach. I don’t know the outcome. I lived in Charleston all my life (71 years) and you might want to talk to others that grew up here and are still around . I strongly believe that Hurricane Hazel not Hugo washed out part the street that dropped off where you have to turn and get on East Ashley to continue down to Light House.

I was at Folly Beach several weeks ago at the far end across from the lighthouse. I was washing the sand off my feet at the edge of the water, and I stepped a couple of feet into the water, and I fell into a hole or something, and the water was over my head. Luckily, I was able to bounce back up and pull myself onto the beach, but I was about ready to yell for help. I had no warning that there was a dropoff, so this was totally unexpected.

Major drop-off at the lighthouse end of the island. I would advise not going anywhere near that water. You got lucky. Not a good place to swim at all. If you are ever in the area again I would recommend checking it out at low tide. The drop off will be right at the water line. You can get a close look at how deep it really is in some parts. Way overhead water.

How did the washout get named the washout in 1989 after Hugo when we called it the washout back in 1985?

Awesome video sir but respectfully the wash out did not get its name in 1989. I lived there from birth in 1973-1993. It predates Hugo many years. Just FYI

Wash Out was caused by Hurricane Hazel in 1954. I lived on Folley Beach in 1954 and saw it as a small child and my mother often talked about it. I went to the Wash Out in the 1960’s where the surfers were. I ate at the Atlantic House repaired in 1970’ - 1 of 2 houses that remained and were not washed away in 1954. I am glad to see your opinion.
