Manual wheelchair power mod under $200!

My son Cameron could not keep up with other kids outside in his wheelchair. This mod turned his wheelchair into a hotrod! Now he can be included and keep up with the kids on their bikes and scooters. I just need to figure out a way to slow him down. ;)
Power assist for a wheelchair costs over $2500. Big expense for Families in that situation. This modification can be done for under 200 bucks.

Truss clamp (measure the axel diameter to buy the right size truss clamp) amzn.to/2mDWWib This one works for 1-1/4 to 1-3/8 axel. Replace through bolt with longer bolt to go through the Razor tube.
Attach a truss clamp to the axel exactly in the center. Good idea to use electric tape to protect the finish on the axel. The bolt on the truss clamp needs to be long enough to go through the main powerrider tube.
Loosely attach the U-Bolt to the main power rider tube with the bolt ends facing upwards. Move the pipe clamp up and down the main powerrider tube so that the clamp contacts the crossbar on the wheelchair just enough to lift the front wheels off the ground a inch or so and tighten. I recommend also splitting a piece of PVC pipe in half with two holes to go over the bolt ends so the crossbar rests on the pvc instead of the metal to protect the coating on the crossbar. The wheelchair i put it on is a Panthera but this should work with most similar chairs with slight modification.

Hey great diy. You can use rubber caps for the ubolt to stop it from scratching the frame as well. I think I need one, would give me a lot of extra help and mobility. Cheers

Thanks for the idea of using a truss clamp. I'm planning on use a hoverboard to power a manual wheelchair. Remove the foot rests off the swing-away arms, and put a piece of wood or some other material across the two. Then attach the truss clamp on the boards center, and bolt that to the bar. Using an alternate hoverboard firmware with the ADC settings and a joystick. Should be fun and also allow me to be more mobile in places where there are ramps, but they are more geared toward people being pushed(ie a lot of extra strength needed to traverse the steep incline).

Cool invention Rob, 👏👏 I have to built one for my son too; he is 13 and almost stopped using his hands. Just wondering how the assembly is working now? Did you have to do any further modifications eversince. By the way I am not very clear how the front u- bracket completely bond with the wheelchair. Did you leave it hanging or did you somehow clamp it with the wheelchair. I m thinking from a stability point of view. Great work please continue adding more similar videos, I'm interested. I'v had back issues for yeas and ever now and then my back gives out.. looking for something were I dont have to pay arm and leg for motorized wheeled chair.. this is perfect.. so I dont have depend on my family. Thanks for sharing
