I grew up on my granddaddy’s farm I remember sitting in the big truck with a load of sheeted tobacco with my daddy and granddaddy and hearing the auctioneer selling tobacco, I wish it would go back to that way again I love farming and tractors especially Ford tractors and farm equipment it’s in my blood

Lost art of tobacco auctioneering sad to see. Danville Virginia was the epicenter. My dad Charlie was one of the very best of all time. He passed in 1987 during his reign as World Champion.

Competed in that same competition in '89, and used this video of Charlie Fowlkes (and others with Walter Wilkerson, Sandy Houston, Bob Cage, Harry Crisp, Mac Trueluck) for training. I was lucky enough to auction on the same floor as Bob Cage for a while, and many-a-time sold to Bill Yates, who seemed to be on the buyers team in every competition. Bill's style of buying was exactly as it is in this video, competition or not. My condolences, Sam, your dad was a true hero, I lament I couldn't meet him in person. Respect!

What is the auctioneer saying? Hearing a lot of terminology I don't undertstand.

Alot of what is said in between numbers is referred to as "filler words" and can be any variety of phrases the auctioneer can use comfortable. Some examples are "bid it on" or "who 'da bit now" or other things similar. So a chant, slowed down, could be "25...25 a bid it now, somebody bid it now, bid it now, anybody bit it now at 30? 30 here... 30 where? Say that fast and it's not long before you can say the words so fast it's not distinguishable to the ear save for the numbers, which in honesty.... is the most important part!
