Jack Lame He met a future wife when she was 13 years old. He actually married her when she was 16. That doesn’t fully take away from the squick factor, but at the time child marriage was still extremely prevalent around the world and 16 was probably not considered as bad as it is today. This is not a complete defense, just a recontextualization.

@forensix7811 ай бұрын
@@WalkwYah “Huh” what? There would be NO Harvey Weinstein without Charlie Chaplin. Not in terms of cinema, but in terms of RAPE. Chaplin invented the casting couch. It was well-known, even at the time. Chaplin’s “rival”, Buster Keaton, even once said that because of the size of Charlie’s member, the casting couch was Chaplin’s only way to actually lay a woman. Keaton, during the culture of the time, was known to NOT have that problem. Furthermore, Chaplin liked them YOUNG. Chaplin initially met his second wife when she was TWELVE YEARS OLD, before impregnating and marrying her at 15/16. Learning from that mistake, Chaplin married his 4th and final wife, Oona, mere weeks after she turned 18. They’d been acquainted for a year prior. He was 54 at the time. Chaplin was the OG Hollywood predator. This is a statement of fact. But, much like Michael Jackson, his influence and prolificacy were so outsized that nobody ACTUALLY cared that much. Minimal impact on legacy. Plus, for Chaplin, he’s got the added advantage of having done all of this nearly 100 years ago. Do I need to explain further?

Charlie didnt want to initially come back to the US to accept the Oscar as he feared the reception towards him would be negative. It was his wife Oona, who convinced him to accept this honour. He was fearful that people would have forgotten him after all the years away from the screen and that his return to the US would be greeted with hostility. You only have to watch this video to see how humble and emotional he was by the audience's reaction to him. Charlie Chaplin was a genius and a true legend.

Calvin Edwin "Cal" Ripken Jr. (born August 24, 1960), nicknamed "The Iron Man", is an American former baseball shortstop and third baseman who played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles (1981-2001). His season highlight came on September 6, 1995, when Ripken surpased Lou Gehrig's 56-year-old record for consecutive games played (2,130 games). The crowd in the stands, the opposing players and all four umpires gave Ripken a standing ovation lasting more than 22 minutes, one of the longest standing ovations for any athlete. During the ovation, Ripken did a lap around the entire Camden Yards warning track to shake hands and give high-fives to the fans.

I had the honor of attending these 44th awarding of the Oscars--what a night it was. Something that occurred at this special presentation of Chaplin's honorary award that isn't shown in this video was, just after the gentleman finished introducing Chaplin onstage, Chaplin appeared from the wings on stage left (your right as you're looking). He was then serenaded by Johnny Mathis singing, "Smile" as he walked toward center stage. The audience erupted and stood on its feet….the ovation lasted twelve minutes (to this day, the longest in Oscar history) as Johnny sang the lyrics and, as I looked around, so many people were in tears, as was I. It truly was a magical evening and this video helped to bring back so many memories of that night. By the way, Chaplin's appearing at this Oscars presentation was his first visit to the United States in over 20 years! He was overwhelmed by the reception he received. While I don't agree with his political views, I do recognize him as being one of the major pinnacles in the history of film making. He was brilliant at it.

@@titusho2 Communism is evil. It is demonic to its core. Socialism, when allowed, always leads to Communism. While I admire Chaplin's filmmaking skills and talent, I abhored his political beliefs. Communism is diametrically opposed to the Judeo-Christian foundation upon which our nation, the United States, was founded. When Krushchev, after taking office after Stalin's death, revealed the atrocities to the world all that Stalin had propogated and involved himself in. Krushchev, too, participated in the horrific atrocities in the former USSR -- in fact, more deaths occurred under Stalin than did Hitler. Nevertheless, these revelations failed to have any affect upon Chaplin and, hopefully, have his views changed. Instead, when he left the USA to go live in Switzerland, he was living off royalties from his films made in the USA --- and he remained pro-Soviet to his death. What did the USSR do, in return, to show their "gratitude" to Chaplin? They opened a Chaplin museum in Moscow, and during Chaplin's paternity suit with Joan Berry, the Soviets launched a Chaplin festival and blamed all his troubles on the Trotskyites and the William Randolph Heart press. Chaplin and all the rest involved in the blacklist -- deserved to be blacklisted. They allowed themselves to be duped by Communist infiltration into Hollywood that began in the 1930's and continued right in to the '40's. They did it through "front groups" posing as humanitarian aid groups, what have you, that were led by registered Communists. Chaplin was involved with these groups, as were many others such as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, James Cagney, Edward G Robinson, Lillian Hellman who later became a screen writer...hordes of back lot, stage workers, etc., were duped into this mess. But, Chaplin (and Lillian Hellman, among many) continued right along and supported whole heartedly the Soviet cause and control of America. Hollywood was one of the plum areas the Soviets sought control and influence in order to achieve their goals. Thankfully, they failed. By the mid 1950's, much of the Communist influence in Hollywood had come to a close. Today, however, it's rearing its ugly head again through the co-opting of liberals and progressives to their side, easily deluding them to believing that a socialist state is the ideal, utopian state. WHAT...A...LIE!!!

The fact that he only ever revived an honorary Oscar gives hope to all film makers today, espetially comedic, that don't have the best reputation with critics. I honestly think that of modern comedic film makers the one most likely to be remembered as the Chaplin of our era is Seth Rogen. If you're a film geek you'll probably disagree whole heartedly, but terms of modern comedic cinema, he parallels Chaplin.

Abby Phillips uhh no... first you have to understand that mr chaplin was given a special honorary award by the academy for "the circus" it preceded the "honorary oscar" in 72' by 40+ years. rather then take all 4 categories for best actor/director/writer/comedy picture, the academy removed him from the running and distinguised him as in a category all his own. "for versatility and genius in acting/writing/directing/producing" say that word again..."genius" sinkin in yet? the achievement of "the circus" in the annals of films at that time was inimitable and deserving of more prestige than his competition could compete with. likewise, the special honorary award in 29' is paramount to the honorary oscar 72' chaplin still received an accolade from the academy for a singular piece of work and a dubious oscar ONE year after the honorary in 1972 for his score in limelight. count 2 oscars. an honorary in 1972 and one in 73' for music plus the special honorary award given for the circus in 29'. "the circus" special award acknowledgement by the academy that ultimately surpassed his competiton was a validation of his genius and work. lets not forget it also was the very 1st academy awards. writer/director/actor/producer... things like this are rare for filmmakers and award ceremonies. not to mention it was unheard of at that time to receive multiple category nominations. and no, seth rogen compared to the master that was chaplin diminishes the wonderment/charm/mastery that that man was. you dont have to be a "film geek" and pass on more diminishment with that callous approach to this artform. the comparitive diminishment of one of the founding fathers of cinema by saying rogen parallels anything that man accomplished is laughable at best, and unmeritable at least. let me know when rogen composes/directs/produces/acts/writes his pictures and does it per film. every film. reinvents vaudeville to do stage work and has a silent film body of work in the mid 70's. starts a collaborative film company. all of this and add 50+ years in the industry, then... maybe... rogen can be held in the same breathe that was this man. you effectively compared a master to an apprentice. and p.s. the closest comparison to a "chaplin of our era" is woody allen. mr allen has "eras" under his belt. eras! aaaaand last but certainly not least, critics have NO say who wins the oscar. its peers who do the voting and "reputation with critics" means absolutely nothing. this isnt some golden globes foreign press voting structure. its peers. NOT critics/press/media who do the voting. TL:DR 1. chaplin has 3 awards from the academy of motion picture arts and sciences. 3! 2. rogen has yet to be proven as anything nearing chaplins genius. 3. "reputation with critics" means less than nothing concerning the academy awards or the AMPAS voting structure, let alone the honorary awards they bestow. its peers who cast the votes. know your history or youll be doomed to repeat it.

It brought tears to my eyes, still does. And my Dad who was no Liberal saying, " Of all the people that should have been kicked out of the USA and weren't, why him ".....Of course J Edgar Hoover had died....The greatest Oscar moment ever was Charlie Chaplin returning to USA after decades, to be Honored, and Honored he was, and this short clip doesn't capture the tears and love from all the stars for Chaplin on this night. For it was Chaplin who was at the beginning, and they owed their success later to him. The love and emotion in the room will never, can never be duplicated.....I suggest on KZbin watching end of City Lights as the girl who was blind is laughing at the Tramp, but feeling his hand remembers him, and it was the Tramp who was her friend when blind and got the money for her operation, and the words for the girl, " Yes, Now I can See "....Or The Tramp rescuing the crying child being taken away....He amazes you with Comedy, but he amazes you with Drama....and on Music, the end of Modern Times, his song SMILE....and Petula Clark had a hit 1960's song with a Charlie Chaplin song, " This Is My Song ", with his words very fitting, " I care not what the world may say. Without your love there is no day "......It is fitting that after the decades, Chaplin was brought back to have his day after a shameful part of the 1950's blacklist era.

I searched this comment section (not the whole thing - it is way too long, I just searched for a moment) to see if anyone else besides you had mentioned that he was blacklisted. Nope!

Most well deserved standing ovation in history. Even in 2018, I can't think of a more important/influential actor in terms of advancing cinema/entertaining the world and keeping people from tearing each other's throats out. I mean, this man kept people entertained and motivated in some of the most difficult times in post 20th century history. And I'm seeing in the comments that this ovation actually lasted 12 full minutes?! That makes me smile, I only wish it was longer, but that would probably embarrass Charlie who is one of the most humble people ever, and already seemed totally overwhelmed by the love shown!

You can't deny the contribution this man made to early cinema and comedy in general, nor the fact he has influenced generations of talented comedians for over 90 years.

+Ryan Douglas yes you can deny it. without studio promotion he would have been nowhere. he also failed after the silent era so there goes the talent right? comedians since him have been far funnier.
@cocodakilla8 жыл бұрын
It isn't impossible. Those talented comedians have not done work influenced by Chaplin and you can't even see the same styles. Charlie was a silent film actor. That is it. Movies were big in the 20s and having a unique look helped. Actual acting came about later and he failed at it. Anyone can do silent movies. You need a catchy name and look.

Legally Resisting Tyranny Because he wanted we are all the same and have the same, no rich and no poor. Only western world demonise communism and people are brainwashed how communism is bed because it was dangerous for elite and establishment. China communist country with the big GDP today.
@Lampshade516 жыл бұрын
He never "liked" Communism. He was one of the richest people in Hollywood.....why would he want to be a Communist? The truth is that he considered himself a universal "citizen of the world" and the whole commie thing started during World War II when he called for the USA to support Russia in their fight against the Nazis.

It was a witch hunt with movie stars, directors and writers all being unjustly blacklisted. They killed John Garfield. He had a heart attack at 38 from the stress of all the lies.
@Bluegirl2852 жыл бұрын
You could definitely tell by the look on his face and the tears in his eyes, in fact his whole overwhelmed response, that he truly did not expect such a huge welcome. He probably thought there would be very few people in the audience who would even remember that he was some actor from the silent films. I am so so glad that he died knowing that he was, and would always be, remembered and loved.

Chaplin is bigger than the Oscars. He did more for films than any other single person in the world and this is not an overstatement.
