Saw this film 3 years ago in the Piazza Centrale in Bologna at their annual film festival. It was accompanied by a live pianist. 3000 people watching. It's one of the funniest, most affecting films I've ever seen. Charlie Chaplin was a stone-cold genius.

What do you mean way ahead of his time? This was the Silent Era. Wasn’t it great that it took the Talkies so long to come along? If the Talkies had come in a short time after the Wright Brothers invented the modern aeroplane (not some 25 years after!), then the whole nature of comedy and its possibilities, as the Silent Era exemplified, would have been lost to civilisation. So, no, Chaplin was not ahead of his time; he was just a highly talented, original artist in his own right. Time luckily stayed still so Hollywood’s early pioneers could take a breath: and really think things through. Thank goodness. It’s always the conceit of a bereft, current generation to imagine the likes of Charlie are in our club. In all areas of art and entertainment today, music, acting, character, we need to get back to basics.
