When you do "Scaffolding", you actually do not tell the right answer or say you are wrong, but be patient and find a way to help the one find the right way to do it, like saying "counting with your finger touching it".

I had to watch this for a class, and I don't see how this is anything more or less than a child counting blocks. Anyone have an explanation as to what I should be getting from this?

a bit late, but better late than never: Vygotski claimed that a child can gain new skills under guided participation, i.e. a more skilled person guiding it through a task. So little Charlie counted the objects randomly, but when (probably) his mom lead him to the strategy of organizing the objects by appearance and then recounting them, he immediately adapted it & continued on his own. In Vygotski's words, she lead him over the "zone of proximal development," which is the interval between what the child is spontaneously able to do on its own and what it is able to do under guidance. Hope that helps.
