Bud did study at the New England Conservatory w Georges Mager (Mr. Schilke also studied under him). Bud won the audition for the CSO in 1947 playing on a NY Bach 7B. Mr. Schilke copied that MPC and is sold today as the Schilke model 11. In truth, Bud's sound didn't really alter until after he had the accident and HAD to go to a larger diameter and when he did, that's when the sound changed. Vincent Bach made Bud 3 different models with screw rims for him-an A cup, B & C cup. The way Bach designed Bud's pieces was to have the high point of the rim closer to the center of the cup. Remember, Vacchiano was the top dog but, right around the time Pictures was released, everybody started seeking what Bud was doing to get "that sound."

The underparts were 1, 1B, and 1C. Bud used 1C rims on them. That rim can be custom ordered from Schilke and Karl Hammond Design by asking for the 1CH rim, and from Frost Custom Brass by asking for the Laskey 80C rim (Laskey copied directly from Bud's mouthpiece when he worked at Schilke). Of note is in the 1950s, the actual dimensions were a little less big. For example, a Bach 1 today is practically a bathtub, but one from the Mt. Vernon era is narrower and more manageable. I used to have a Bach 1 made in the 1970s; even that was much narrower than those made today and the rim was flatter, closer to a 1X profile.

@@THall-vi8cp yessir! Scott told me he (Scott) was the only person Bud allowed to copy his MPC. Although, Mr. Schilke's model (the 18) is similar to Bud's design where the high point of the rim is closer to the center of the MPC

Where does Charlie describe his experience playing under Bud: the joys, the difficulties, the revelations, the frustrations, the cautions, the rules, the expectations…

He slipped it in there, real quick and easy to miss, but it’s there. In reference to the one guy who blew louder than Bud….”he missed the point.”
