Today people largely consider the states to be fairly weak and the Federal government to be the whole government. The Constitution specifically put a box around the Federal government which has been expanded because of a single weakness in the language of the Constitution. The is a list of Federal government powers which had a clause to allow for miscellaneous and unforeseen powers the Federal government might need. This clause is now a huge portion of the Federal government powers. Please, depower the Federal government and return the states to prominence.

Yeah I used to be annoyed by the electoral college, but then I learned a little more about it, and I’m glad it’s the way it is. Small states have to be heard, and them having a powerful vote keeps big states from ruling the nation.
@WyattTheGuyattАй бұрын
That makes no sense. Big cities already dominate elections within the state elections, so should we have the electoral college within states? It's just a crutch. All votes should be treated equally.
@mrhobsАй бұрын
@@WyattTheGuyatt Well you're right that big cities tend to dominate their states, which is kind of a shame I guess. So states having a more even distribution of power isn't perfect, but its better than not having it. All regions should be treated equally imo. If a million people in a city vote against something that a thousand farmers in some rural area care about, they are screwed every time. It may also hurt the city people if they are voting against something they don't know a lot about. Their food (or the cost of it) may be at risk. The people in each region are the ones to be most trusted with doing what is right in their area.) Think about a pack of wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner. That's why we have a constitutional republic, and not merely a pure democracy. Meh, we probably both need to read up on this more. Peace out
@WyattTheGuyattАй бұрын
@@mrhobs With regards to your farmer scenario, what if we made a system where the 1000 farmers were constantly able to vote against something that the million people in the city care about? I contend that the electoral college creates that system now. The sheep and wolves thing is always a problem no matter in any system. However, what you are saying is that if there are two sheep and one wolf, the wolf should decide what's for dinner. If we follow the analogy, the best system should prevent the victor from having any power over what's for dinner. This is already true because of our constitutional protections for individual freedoms, our separation of powers, and our checks and balances. These all should prevent any one faction from being able to infringe on people's rights (unless the faction is insanely large, like amending the constitution large). So what I would ask is, why do we need the electoral college then? The safeguards are present, just leave it to the people. It's how we do it in the states already, as I mentioned before.
@mrhobsАй бұрын
@@WyattTheGuyatt I don't disagree with the bulk of that. For the first part, I would say even with the electoral college in place, the populated places still get what they vote for more often than not. The larger states still have some level of dominance. But again, I'd have to study a little more before I feel passionate enough to debate much more about it. 🤷♂ I just like the idea that ALL the states are kind of forced to work together. Reading up on the UN might give us more to think about. I've stayed up too late already though, goodnight! 😅
@WyattTheGuyattАй бұрын
@@mrhobs I don't disagree that the larger states have some level of dominance, but it leaves lots of voters unheard. 6 million republicans voted for Donald Trump in California in 2020, but their votes don't matter under the current system. That just seems unfair to me. In fact, the desires of the people in California in general don't matter. Presidential candidates just campaign in swing states, and only cater to their electorates, but a voter in Wyoming or a voter in Delaware ought to feel just as heard as one in Georgia or Wisconsin. I just don't think the electoral college should force the states to work together. It isn't a chamber like the House or Senate. It is just the way we choose the executive, so why not just leave it straight up to the people themselves? Anyways, I appreciate your thoughtful engagement, and I hope you sleep well. Our Founding Fathers were also concerned about tyranny of/by the majority and respecting minority rights
@WyattTheGuyattАй бұрын
The founding fathers were not a monolith. They disagreed on a variety of subjects. Aside from that, just because they believed in something doesn't make it correct. A large number of them believed women should not be able to vote. They were people just like us and were wrong just as we can be. The electoral college as an institution should not exist because it is tyranny of the minority.

Thank you! Finally someone points out "the tyranny of the majority." Someone who actually read the Federalist Papers. That was one of the biggest issues the Founding Fathers debated. I think the Electoral College could (and should) be modified to work better, but it is hugely important that each STATE maintains its own sovereignty. Stop "the tyranny of the majority."
@dark3031Ай бұрын
Tyranny of the majority, where the states with the highest population can essentially dictate the policies of lower population states like Wyoming, Nebraska, Nevada etc.
@WyattTheGuyattАй бұрын
@@dbf1dware The tyranny of the majority is stopped by the protections of the constitution. We don't need to use it to justify subverting the will of the people. The electoral college is tyranny of the minority.

The electoral college actually facilitates everyone's vote having weight. Without it, a handful of the same large states (and their large cities) would determine the vote, and the smaller states and rural cities might as well make a paper airplane out of their ballot. The result would be candidates not having to care at all about those states. The founding fathers were intelligent and had incredible foresight regarding this and other matters. God bless America!
@MichaelHavlenАй бұрын
yep...and then those candidates would have no reason to campaign in the smaller states or cities knowing that those votes would not matter.

What people NEVER realize is that the Electoral College is a state by state vote. Each STATE is voting for what they want. And the entire point of small states having 3 EC Votes is that they have 3 representatives, because otherwise they have basically no say in the national stage. It's all very simple. And EVERY SINGLE STATE has 2 Senators, and at the least 1 Representative. These people are not thinking.
@WyattTheGuyattАй бұрын
The president is the executive for the PEOPLE of the country, not the states. As such, they should be elected by the people. The electoral college needs to be abolished.
@LukeAnderson101Ай бұрын
@@WyattTheGuyattabsolutely not, we aren’t a democracy. “He’s not for the states” are you ignoring the states are the people? So you don’t care if smaller states get ignored on the national stage? Our system has worked for many years and you’re not going to change it, otherwise leave.
@WyattTheGuyattАй бұрын
@@LukeAnderson101 We are a democracy. I don't think you know what that word means. We are not a pure democracy because we have protections for minority rights. Those protections are enshrined in the constitution, and are further safeguarded by the separation of powers and checks and balances of the different branches. We don't need the electoral college to protect minority rights. Smaller states are already ignored on the national stage. The only states candidates care about is swing states, large or small. That's patently unfair. Just because a system has been in place for a long time doesn't mean it shouldn't be removed. Senators were elected by state legislatures for a long time as well, but we changed it. We should try to make our country into a more perfect union, not arrogantly assume we already have reached perfection.
@LukeAnderson101Ай бұрын
@@WyattTheGuyatt Jesus imagine thinking we are a democracy when it’s easily proven we are not lmao we are a constitutional republic. Do we elect representatives to represent us? Yes. We don’t vote through a majority, just stop making excuses and accept what we are. Thankfully your opinion is just that, an opinion. The electoral college isn’t going anywhere, it’s part of our great system to help out the little guys so they get a voice in a smaller state. Your ideas would just make their voices not heard and the presidents would never visit those places that don’t matter in election seasons, they would only care about the big cities. This is our system and it’s not going to change because some people don’t like it, there’s plenty of countries with democracy that you can go visit

The reason our system is better is because the electoral college protects lower population areas and their way of life and culture and economy from the higher population cities. Clusters of voters vote in their own self interest, not the interest of the voters 2000 miles away. We would be playing the hunger games within 100 years if we went straight to democracy.
@WyattTheGuyattАй бұрын
That makes no sense. The electoral college ensures that presidential candidates only have to cater to swing states. Also, if your argument was true, we should also have the electoral college in state elections, as they do in Mississippi. The electoral college subverts the will of the people and should be abolished.
