This is so sad. I was born here in 1939. I went to school here . Many of these homes were part of a WW2 project as housing for the shipyards and airbase employees. They were sold to private owners in the 1960 and turned into low rent housing. With little upkeep or care this is what you get. Up until I saw this I thought I was homesick. Thanks for the reality check.

This may be hard to believe, but this was once a thriving city , however, crooked politicians and bad management coupled with white flight led to the city's downfall. Same as with many other cities that have fallen on hard times like Detroit and Gary Indiana. The city has suffered two Bankruptcies and recently arrested one of its city officials for stealing over a hundred thousand from the city coffers.

For those that don’t know, Prichard is a small city that sits directly next to Mobile. You wouldn’t even know it except for the signs, as one block down you’re in Prichard all of a sudden. Along with Bessemer and Selma, it has a reputation of having some of the most extreme gang violence in Alabama, up there with the likes of Gary/East St Louis/etc. in terms of crime.

I used to drive semi in the 90's and took walks around Mobile while I was laid over waiting for a reload. It was different then, people kept to themselves but were respectful. They took most responsibility for what went down in their areas and didn't mix much with other's from outlying areas. It was a way to live peacefully. There was something kinda' magical about them. It was better then, you could walk for miles and explore, people were just curious. Friendly. Some would walk with me for an hour or so and tell me stories.

This is everywhere in America. We do volunteer work in poor areas of my rural NC county, I've stopped being shocked by homes that haven't seen repair in years, but have lawns filled with cigarette butts and pepsi cans. One trailer we pass regularly has a huge trump flag flying next to it's front door, but part of the roof has caved in and is covered with a tattered tarp. Sometimes it's about bad choices.

I grew up in the Village back in the 80's. All the streets flooded back then too. We used to swim in them after a hard rain. It wasn't a bad place to live, just a bunch of poor folk trying to survive. Most of us ran together and there wasn't a big divide between races like it is nowadays. There was an equal mixture of black and white people. I miss my childhood.
