One thing I disagree with is moving Memphis over Minnesota to the eastern conference. Yes Memphis is geographically further East than Minneapolis but Memphis has New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Oklahoma City located geographically closer to Memphis than ANY western conference city is to Minneapolis while Minneapolis is close to Chicago, Milwaukee and Indianapolis all of which in the east. It would benefit Minnesota a lot more than Memphis to move East.

Let's not forget that Montreal has started developing NBA talent, too... so while taxation might cause issues into free agency, Montreal's weather issues are nothing new to the NBA. Milwaukee, Minnesota, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Boston and Toronto all have more or less the same weather issues, the last 2 can have rivalries spill over from hockey... Montreal does have an advantage or two over Toronto or Vancouver, however: housing is not as expensive (but Montreal is still relatively expensive when compared to other NBA markets) and nightlife that's easily top-5 in today's NBA.

Here’s my expansion list. I did 40 teams and instead of East/West, I decided to use a National/American format like it’s used in the NFL & MLB. The 2 conferences are the NBL (National Basketball League) & ABL (American Basketball League). The 4 ABA teams that are part of the NBA (Nets, Pacers, Nuggets & Spurs) have been added to the ABL as well several old ABA teams being re launched in the ABL. I also renamed some of the city names of teams (California Clippers & Tennessee Grizzlies) I also brought old teams like the Baltimore Bullets back & defunct team names like the Bobcats back as being used as the franchise for Cincinnati. Back when the Nets were in NJ, they had considered rebranding as the Swamp Dragons! (Lol no joke) so I thought NJ Dragons would be a good fit. Pittsburgh is well known for its steel industries so I thought the name Pyros (as in the flames and heat used to melt steel & other metals) would be a good name plus it sounds a lot like Pirates (the MLB team). As for KC, they used to have the Kings, plus with other heir achy team names like Chiefs & Royals, I thought Crowns could be a good fit. Las Vegas is pretty self explanatory, it’s in the desert so Scorpions seems applicable plus it has “score” in its name. I understand Toronto is the Mecca city of Canada and it is the central hub of our country much like how New York and Los Angeles is for the United States. However it doesn’t mean that a country of 38 million people can only sustain ourselves with one professional sports league team in basketball and baseball. Up until recently I would've said the NBA was actually too large for the talent pool, as evidenced by the consolidation and extreme premium placed on the top star power. The league is definitely deeper now. My approach to NBA expansion is an organic one built on one huge premise. The current NBA map actually lends itself really well to 5 divisions of 6 teams. Several teams, like Minnesota, Portland, and Washington, are islands within their respective division maps and would benefit from a more geographically sane alignment. Also, the current playoff structure makes divisions heavily useless outside of scheduling, and collapsing the conference-division distinction would make scheduling more regional while also addressing the common complaint of conference imbalance. Atlantic: Boston, New York, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Washington, Toronto Southeast: Charlotte, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, Memphis, New Orleans Central: Cleveland, Detroit, Indiana, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minnesota Southwest: Oklahoma City, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Denver, Phoenix Pacific: Portland, Utah, Sacramento, Golden State, LA Clippers, LA Lakers For playoff seeding, the top 16 teams qualify, with division winners guaranteed a top 8 seed and home court in their first round matchup. This alignment also forms the basis of my hypothetical expansion up to 36. For the purposes of this experiment I would expect to eventually add the following teams: 31: Seattle, Pacific 32: Las Vegas, Southwest 33: Kansas City or St. Louis, Central 34: Kentucky (Colonels), Southeast 35: Virginia (Squires), Atlantic 36: Vancouver, Pacific Scheduling throughout this process would be a pretty straightforward one. Home/Away against every other team, and the remainder of the schedule played as evenly as possible within the division. At a full 36 teams, that's 4-5 games against divisional rivals and 2 games against everyone else.

Hoping that Nashville does get an NBA team. Within 20 years from now, Nashville Tennessee could exceed more then 1,000,000 people I. Population figure, and it is big enough to support all 4 Big 4 Professional Sports. So far, Nashville already have the National Football League as Tennessee Titans, and National Hockey League as Nashville Predators. Why not Nashville does get the Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association? Tennessee is the fastest growing state, especially in the Central Time Zone.

One thing about putting teams in Montreal that often goes unnoticed is how the province of Quebec is home to 8 million people, and a team in Montreal would immediately get a stronghold on the entire province, the same way the Habs have a huge following in the entire province. Even most disgruntled Quebec City fans, who spent 15 years hating the Habs as Nordiques fans have moved on to join the fanbase. And Montreal only has one team in the big 4. With MLB being a far shot for Montreal with the city not having a suitable baseball stadium and the NFL being unrealistic here, the NBA has a clear path

But in St Louis they would have to compete with the NHL. The Grizzlies did briefly consider moving there before they went to Memphis. Ohio and Tennessee would be good examples Cleveland gets the NBA while Columbus gets the NHL. Memphis gets the NBA while Nashville gets the NHL. I mean, aside from the Supersonics, which is a given... who I'd be interested in? Harlem Globetrotters. For those who don't know, the Globetrotters sent a letter to Commissioner Silver back in June 2021, asking for the league to acknowledge their contributions to basketball (as well as them helping form the NBA back in 1949) by making them an official franchise. If they're seriously willing to drop the comedy acts and the NBA can convince both New York and Brooklyn to allow it, I'd be up for the Globetrotters being an NBA team!
@joemckim11832 жыл бұрын
You already have 2 teams in NYC with the Knicks and Nets, a third is a bit too much. And then you would lose the Globetrotters as being their traveling showmanship thing. They would just be a generic NBA team that wasn't doing all of the trick shots and crazy passes that you associate the Globetrotters with.
@realtalk619510 ай бұрын
Horrible idea. NYC doesn't need 3 teams. The oversaturation would take revenue from the other 2 teams and they wouldn't approve that, or alternatively the third team would be a financial failure.

I don't think the NBA needs to expand to 36 teams, there's been franchises for years that struggle to win while some teams always have success. The most they should have is 32 and they should cap it at that with 2 8-team divisions like the NHL has since they basically made NBA divisions meaningless now. Seattle for sure should be getting a team, but the next option should probably be either Kansas City/St. Louis or Vancouver with moving Memphis to the East.
