Wow, 10 years later and still an interview filled with bits of knowledge. Things he explained (in my own words): + Success takes Preparation & Luck- Need to be prepared to take advantage of lucky opportunities + Sometimes being naive or not knowing it all is the best way to start. If he knew what he was getting into, he probably would have never started. +Study other fields, step out from your world and get inspiration from others +8:25 - 9:17 What he said to me meant "By creating an image around the product, it adds more value to the buyer's life than just the physical product. So if you feel more confident getting one product instead of another because of that value, it is worth every dollar"

This was back circa his tenure at Gucci Group, a time-period when he was creative director of women's and men's ready-to-wear at both Gucci and YSL rive gauche. His business relationship with Gucci Group hadn't gone south yet...so of course he didn't embed his own identity into those brands...it took him to realize post-2004 that he needed to take care of himself because the organization at the end of the day is going to take care of himself. Now he doesn't answer to any VPs or CEOs...he is the boss of his own brand and answers to nobody but himself. He can do what he wants. He's a king...and a very shrewd marketing mastermind.

@spoonface96986 жыл бұрын
Could barely make it through this video. I really wish Charlie would have STFU and let Tom speak freely. Charlie is used to coaxing water out of petrified wood. It stems from his experiences with some of the most uptight, boring, inane guests and unfortunately he treats Tom the same way. Tom is one of the most enlightened, intuitive, intelligent people not just in fashion, but in life. He (and viewers like me) would have gained a lot more insight if we could listen to what Tom had to share versus what he was prodded into talking about. Just my 2 cents.

As I opened and closed my own door, alone, here at my camper, I realized: the simple fact that I am capable of opening and shutting my own camper door, SHOULD LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT I AM NOT A SNAKE. Any man who does NOT open and close an actual door for me, IN THE RIGHT WAY, may not be Human. A man without manners might as well be an actual Snake... NOT me.

Tom, Tom, Tom… How about creating less costly fashion and a lipstick that doesn.t cost $ 42.00 You know people in the real world., just as Versace created Versus line?
@iam1ina10000008 жыл бұрын
Another example of a fashion designer that slept their way to the top and then chooses to rewrite their history. Tom was an average looking, struggling, wannabee actor, surviving as a gay bar boy until he finally found a rich sugar daddy that was well connected in the fashion world. (Richard Buckley knew everyone in the fashion world as he was the international chief editor for Vogue mens magazine! Tom was a nobody, going nowhere until he 'hooked' that guy and all the doors were opened to him. There are lots of talented fashion designers, that never 'made it' because they were not willing to sell their soul and sleep their way to the top. After all it is not what you know but who you blow! Chanel, Von Furstenberg, Rhoem, Louboutin, are some other fashion designers that were nobody going nowhere until they met a rich older man, that paid all their bills and introduced them to the world of the rich and famous. Tom Ford is a fraud, talented perhaps but totally delusional if he thinks he would be where he is solely on his own talent. He sold his soul. period.
@pobstrel7 жыл бұрын
iam1ina1000000 So how do you explain him also being a successful movie director/producer then?
@iam1ina10000007 жыл бұрын
The movie business is like the fashion business and the restaurant business. In a fine restaurant, a chef can add items to 'his' menu that were created by another staff chef that he hired. That other chef must agree to never create that dish ever again, as it is now a famous house dish owned by that head chef. In the fashion industry you hire a team of talented and experienced designers to create a line for you and because you pay them, you own their work and you can put your name to it. In the movie business you hire a team of directors and a team of producers and then you put your name up there on the screen for the world, as Madonna has done. A big name is also a box office draw and if Tom Ford was only on set for an hour a day, while the directors and producers created the film, he could still claim to be the executive producer and director... who is going to say he wasn't the director or producer and risk ruining their career. It is Hollywood after all, the land of make believe. Nothing is what it seems and Tom Ford may be relatively talented, but could hardly get to where he is now, unless he slept with the right person that opened the doors to jet set and handed him all the 'who's who' connections needed to do what he did.
