I just finished Charlotte Bronte's masterpiece and was extremely impressed by her masterful use of the metaphor in at least a dozen places in the story. I got very involved with Jane on a personal level in that I was so grateful to the characters that showed her compassion and love and conversely was hateful towards those who were cruel and antagonistic towards her. Oh yes, the movie! I haven't seen them all (it's testimonial to Bronte's incredible novel that so many films have been released about it) but so far this one's my favorite ❤. George C Scott was wonderful as Mr. Rochester but Susannah York was simply stunning as Jane Eyre. She just killed it! Kudos!

@@annetekoul I loooove Scott as Scrooge! Dalton is my preferred Rochester, but he does acquit himself well here, age notwithstanding. Scott is the only American actor I'm aware of who can convincingly play British literary characters despite having no trace of a British accent, and hold his own with the British actors who surround him.

Loved reading the book when I was about 12. I really love George C Scott in this 1970 film version, which I hadn't seen before. He has real charisma and makes an excellent Edward Rochester. A very fine actor who would not be considered conventionally handsome, and yet he was magnetically attractive. Loved him in Dr Strangelove. Good cameos too from Jack Hawkins and Ian Bannen. Susannah York grows on you as the film progresses. Another good film version is the one from the late 1990s with Ciaran Hinds as Rochester and Samantha Morton as Jane. It's certainly one of the great love stories. Interesting to hear the film score, so many films in the late 60s to late 70s era used the harpsichord, we notice it here too in music composed by John Williams. Thanks for posting this.

this is the only adaptation so far where everyone actually resembles the characters described in the books, both in looks and in manners. I don't get people's fascination with Orson Wells, he was overacting a lot and far too brutish and unrefined to pass as an English nobleman.

I honestly find it absurd when people zero in on Rochester's flaws then hate him and the book because of it. When reading a book or watching a film, you look at the story as a whole. You examine what leads a character to do the things he did, and also if he/she realizes his/her mistakes and repents of it, which is what Rochester did in the end It's sad though that the film and tv adaptations do not show this fully, including his reasons for keeping his marriage to Bertha a secret. You really need to read the book, and read it meticulously, to understand the character fully. It's actually also a story of redemption (Rochester's) as much as it is about Jane's trials and triumphs.

True. Or he could have just left her in Jamaica. And let's also not forget how he tried to save her from the fire (that she herself caused) when he could have just let her burn and be forever rid of her. And also his adopting Adele when there was absolutely no proof that she is his child.

This version of Jane Eyre was the very first I had ever seen. I was a teen and knew nothing of the book or its history. I fell in love with this movie. I cried at the end. I never forgot it and subsequent versions, and the previous one with Orson Welles could not compare, in my eyes. I like this one so much because they didn't overact their parts. Some versions almost seem cheesy to me. But this one is brilliant. George C Scott, though not necessarily a handsome man, was somehow beautiful to me in this film. I chalk it up to his acting and his charm in this role. Though Susannah wasnt exactly homely enough for this part, in fact she was very pretty, she played it so well that it didn't matter to me. What a wonderful film!

George C. Scott in an adaptation of the classic novel Jane Eyre? Definitely sounds interesting. George was a man of principal and refused to accept his well-deserved Oscar for Patton because he hated the idea of his fellow actors competing against each other. Bringing this kind of real-life intensity to a Byronic Hero like Edward Rochester should definitely make it worthwhile. With that being said, he was one of the all-time great actors, and I can't recommend his performances in these films enough. George C. Scott's Must See Performances: .Anatomy of A Murder (1959) .The Hustler (1961) .Dr. Strangelove (1964) .Patton (1970) .Hardcore (1979) Susannah York, a great English actress underrated by today's standards, might be known to some of you from her roles in the Freud biopic with Montgomery Clift, A Man For All Seasons, or They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, among many others. Now, a talented English actress in an adaptation of Jane Eyre? Obviously, it's going to work well. Jane Eyre is a classic that's been adapted into period dramas quite a few times at this point. I'm sure many of you know the 1943 version starring Orson Welles & Joan Fontaine and there was a more recent version in 2011 starring Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska. The great thing is whenever actors of a high caliber are at the helm, you know you're seeing something special. Directed by Delbert Mann, who famously gave us the 1955 Ernest Borginine classic, Marty. Thanks again, Cult Cinema Classics!

Thank you very much, JE is my all time favourite book, still I did not know this version. I like its calm style, Rochester is passionate, but not hysterical like in some other vesrions, Jane is - in my opinion - too pretty (though I like the actress otherwise). I think the best Jane so far has been Zelah Clarke .

0:16 The best Jane Eyre version is the 1997 version with Ciaran Hinds and Samantha Morton. Seen them all. Keep going back to Ciaran. Great acting and chemistry.

How I loved this book when I was a child ! There was a TV version circa 1962 but I fear it no longer exists . It aired around 5 or 6pm on a sunday evening and carried a warning that people of a nervous disposition might be frightened by it . I remember Rochester leaning against a mantelpiece uttering the words ''Jane , Jane , Jane '' and the flashback to the fire with the mad wife on the roof with the flames all around and Rochester in his shirt sleeves trying to save her . I have no idea who the actors were . I often walked on country lanes in the hopes of spooking a horse .......I see it so differently now , especially with the awareness Rochester's wealth probably depended on slavery . I enjoyed watching this version .

This movie was captivating. It didn't follow the book which I found dark and tragic and heartbreaking. But this movie was a bit lighter and simply beautiful! George C. Scott is amazing!

aah... believe me the novel written by charlotte bronte was far more beautiful than this movie. as it was more detailed. Many of the events were omitted in the movie. For example, In the end. St. john and his sisters were turned out to be real cousins with Jane eyre, and Jane's Uncle leave a millions of property on her name, on the death bed. As he had no heir except for his niece Jane. Even at the end, in the novel. Mr. Rochester begins to regain his eyesight after getting reunited with Jane.

Cheryl Devine: It may only seem lighter to you because it cannot be as long and detailed as the book is. There is simply not enough time to portray all that goes on in the book. But it is also heart-rending.

@@Sims42069 Yes, that is true but there is only so much that can fit into an hour and a half film, you see. Mind you I few minutes of Jane with the baby and he realizing that he can see a little would have been really nice I was hoping for it.

My English teacher bought me a copy of Jane Eyre when I was ten. I devoured books and had read all of the limited school library. Miss Williams would also talk to me about what I was reading, she and my father taught me how to read critically and deeply. I encourage you to read Wild Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, written from Mrs Rochester’s perspective. I usually heartily dislike books written off the coat tails of an excellent author. This is not. It is an excellent work, full of merit and creating a multi dimensional persona. 😊
