I just finished Charlotte Bronte's masterpiece and was extremely impressed by her masterful use of the metaphor in at least a dozen places in the story. I got very involved with Jane on a personal level in that I was so grateful to the characters that showed her compassion and love and conversely was hateful towards those who were cruel and antagonistic towards her. Oh yes, the movie! I haven't seen them all (it's testimonial to Bronte's incredible novel that so many films have been released about it) but so far this one's my favorite ❤. George C Scott was wonderful as Mr. Rochester but Susannah York was simply stunning as Jane Eyre. She just killed it! Kudos!

He plays the role of Mr Rochester perfectly. Cruelty, cynicism, mockery, disillusionment, despair, sensitivity, pride, elemental desire for purity, beauty, goodness, for true love.

aah... believe me the novel written by charlotte bronte was far more beautiful than this movie. as it was more detailed. Many of the events were omitted in the movie. For example, In the end. St. john and his sisters were turned out to be real cousins with Jane eyre, and Jane's Uncle leave a millions of property on her name, on the death bed. As he had no heir except for his niece Jane. Even at the end, in the novel. Mr. Rochester begins to regain his eyesight after getting reunited with Jane.

This version of Jane Eyre was the very first I had ever seen. I was a teen and knew nothing of the book or its history. I fell in love with this movie. I cried at the end. I never forgot it and subsequent versions, and the previous one with Orson Welles could not compare, in my eyes. I like this one so much because they didn't overact their parts. Some versions almost seem cheesy to me. But this one is brilliant. George C Scott, though not necessarily a handsome man, was somehow beautiful to me in this film. I chalk it up to his acting and his charm in this role. Though Susannah wasnt exactly homely enough for this part, in fact she was very pretty, she played it so well that it didn't matter to me. What a wonderful film!

Though it is not my favourite adaptation of this novel - I appreciate many things in it. For example, I like the final scene - they made is so simple - simple talk with bits of humour - very life-like - without too much of pathos or passion (like in some other versions). And this Rochester did a great job, as well as Jane. Thank you for posting!

Thank you for sharing, I had forgotten what a wonderful actress, Susannah York was! How I wish these old video-taped films could be digitized and upgraded to improve the scenes. Sorry, I do not know the technical terms. please be patient with me. This particular "Jane Eyre", the "Upstairs-Downstairs" series and others had good acting and other production values. But the filming was not well lighted enough. When shown on modern TVs/computer screens; the scenes look murkey, not crisp. One appears to be viewing them with distorted vision from a distance Not that those times (Victorian era) were not grim for all but the most wealthy. Perhaps that is what is being attempted to convey. (However "U-D" was set in a lush Edwardian town-home)
