I was interested in the language of this song and how it was written. It was so beautiful but the word's did not flow in true old Victorian style. It kind of reminded me of 'Pigeon English'. So I had look this song up to learn about it's history. The writer was Jester Hairston, he was a grandson of American slaves born in 1901. He learned the old country speech of his grandparents, so he could sing in the Harlem Choir. This song was orginally written to the tune of "B-I-N-G-O" and was called " He Pone and Chocolate Tea", pone being a type of corn bread. He wrote this song in a Calypso rythym because he had friends coming from the West Indies to a party where the original song was to be sung. Some time later Walter Schumann, at the time conducting Schumann's Hollywood Choir, asked Hairston to write a new Christmas song for his choir. Hairston remembered the calypso rhythm from his old song and wrote new lyrics for it. And that is the History for this very beautiful Christmas song!
