Charlotte City Council to vote on tripling flight paths at CLT airport

After a 2-year study, Charlotte Douglas International Airport wants to triple flight paths. The city council is considering the airport's proposal.

I’m a pilot. What is a “flight path”? Are we talking Standard Instrument Departures? Standard Terminal Arrival Procedures? Most of us take off at reduced thrust (much quieter) and descent to land near idle thrust (basically silent). If this is a real concern, CLT should publish Noise Abatement Procedures.

Planes are only loudest at take off and there’s not even any residential close enough for the noise to be a problem. You don’t even notice the planes unless you’re really looking at them.

Once the new 4th parallel runway is completed, CLT ATC should designate the two westernmost runways to be used primarily for arrivals and the runways closest to the terminal on both sides of the airport should primarily be designated for departures to reduce disruption in terms of air traffic flow and enable better on-time performance for the airlines.

Thanks to modern high-bypass turbofan engines, the increased noise is negligible to minimal. Claiming that noise could be "painful," like this moron Bokhari is claiming, is baseless and wrong.

Noise is absolutely a factor for takeoff patterns and many airports take it into consideration when determining flight paths. Heathrow is probably the best example, where they alternate takeoff/landing runways/directions every two weeks to prevent noise pollution overload. That being said, jets today are a lot quieter than they were 25 years ago, but LHR is also a lot more busy than CLT.

They still use both during the busiest times of the day. They have parallel runways. They also have to go by the wind direction when they choose the runway. And btw, both Heathrow and Charlotte are ranked inside the top 25 busiest airports in the world so saying Heathrow is a lot more busy than Charlotte is showing a lack of knowledge on just how busy Charlotte is.

This is absolutely stupid. One, almost anywhere you go in Charlotte you hear and see the planes just because the location of the airport is closer to center city than most others. However, the truth is most people would never even notice a difference because the planes are quieter and because of noise abatement procedures. Third, this just needs to happen. The amount of traffic this airport handles needs some help. This airport was never initially designed for what it handles now. Charlottes pop has exploded and this is not a little regional airport. If you choose to live in a major city then you choose what comes with living in a major city.
