Charlotte Rae had quite a theater and cabaret career in New York in the 50s, 60s, 70s in hits and flops and shows in between. Like Bea Arthur, Jean Stapleton, Esther Rolle and other ladies of "a certain age" she found her greatest fame in later in television - where all that theater experience REALLY paid off!

Had no idea that she could make such great facial contortions and had such good timing. She was good on The Facts of Life and Car 54 Where Are You, and numerous commercials I have seen in my youth, but her innate zaniness here makes Charlotte seem like someone much better suited for a venue like Sid Caesar's sketch program or something akin to that. What a talent.

@@craigsmith157 Lucille Ball's voice went from high and smooth in the 1940s/50s to deep and crackly in the 1960s until her death. It only accentuated her masculinity. Comedian Martin Short once did a funny bit about it on Letterman: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJKpopVuh751kLM&pp=ygUXbWFydGluIHNob3J0IGx1Y3kgdm9pY2U%3D

Yep- Charlotte made it as an actress in New York, doing TV shows {including "CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU?"} and commercials before emigrating to Hollywood, and becoming a "star" on 'DIFF'RENT STROKES" and "THE FACTS OF LIFE"....

"THIS IS SHOW BUSINESS" wasn't a "game show"- it was a talent showcase for amateur and semi-professional performers, who demonstrated their "specialty" for the panel, who then proceeded to critique their act, advise them on their abilities, and discuss whatever they could associate with the performer {that's where George S. Kaufman would demonstrate how witty he was}.
