When my hubby proposed, he was a shy engineer 40-year-old bachelor. Everyone thought he'd never get married. After dating seriously for over a year, he signed the loan papers for a house. That same night, on the drive back to his place, he nervously took a long time to continue on from the stop sign. Finally he cleared his throat and asked, "Would you live in the house with me - after we get married?" I quite happily said "Yes!" And here we are . . 33 years later, still laughing and loving together.

During WWII, my grandfather, a dirt poor Tennessee farm boy turned Army Air Corp ferry command pilot, met my grandmother. He proposed to her with a ring made of barbed wire from his farm. He de-rusted the metal and polished it to a shine, then polished and soldered a single stainless steel ball bearing to the wire. He used a small amount of clear coat from the air base he flew out of to keep it from rusting again and on the next leave he proposed. She wore it until she died almost 70 years later, still married to my grandfather. When he had more money later in life, he bought her a proper ring with a diamond, but she never took off the barbed wire ring, just moved it to her right hand instead.

I was p'od so I shouted back, "we might as well." To which he responded, "then we'll get f****n' married." I yelled "Fine! Then that's what we'll do." And I stormed out of the room slamming the door behind me. We never discussed the argument. And neither one of us would back down from our bluff. Next thing I know, we actually got married. Thirty years, three kids, and eight grandkids later, we are still together and surprisingly in love. Hahaha But what I wouldn't do for an actual proposal or big wedding. If you haven't discussed marriage with your partner and know you're on the same page, don't do a public proposal. Not only can it be embarrassing but you're putting the other person on the spot if they weren't expecting it and they can feel pressure to say yes, unfortunately some people use that as a manipulation tactic. WHEN the proposal happens should be the surprise.

I can't stand public proposals in general, and glad my husband is not the type of guy to try to do that. A friend had her boyfriend and a local comedian come to our place of work and do a skit prior to offering the ring. She said "maybe". It was pretty awkward when a girl is waffling and the guy is pushing and using public pressure to get her to say yes. He gave her the ring and she put it on her right hand. Her instincts were right. She eventually married him, then divorced him a few years later.

@@DeaDoubleU I later found out that he planned to propose to me twice before and both failed! When my dad first proposed to my mom, the story goes, she burst into tears, slapped him, and told him to never ask again. Six months later, and about three more repeats of this, she realized he was serious (kept using the same ring) and finally said yes. They just had their 31st anniversary. Although we all still laugh about the 25th anniversary. Sis and I were just done with waiting for food to cook in the microwave (popcorn is not supposed to take six minutes!) So… we bought them a new microwave. It’s taken all this time to retrain Dad on how fast a microwave heats things up!
@emilyfogerty6438 Жыл бұрын
Ngl, it was an adjustment to have things heat up in a single minute. It was weird. Popcorn takes 1:45 now. Told my mom to do it that long and she looked at me funny because no way popcorn can be done in less than two minutes. Promptly burned it. Point proven.

My marriage proposal also went wrong. At the time we had been dating for almost 7 years and living together for 2. I was expecting him to propose me during Christmas because he was trying to get the size of my fingers using a string 😂😂 Christmas went by, then Valentines Day.. and nothing. During Easter I was so frustrated that I yelled at him and cried. I wanted to break up. Then he showed me the ring and asked the question. I was at the same time happy and really furious. I wanted to smacked him with this ring and at the same time put it on my finger. When I finally calmed down I said yes. But his "string metod" sucked. He bought me ring in the size 24 (EU) while I have 14 😉 so we had to change it. But now we are 5 years married, have a wonderful 4 yo daughter and are still very happy together, so f*ck the proposal. What matters is love. Peace✌️
