The Charlottesville Fashion Square recorded in February 2024. A mall that’s tied to an infamous event.

Really solid video, the darkness at the beginning in a way sets the tone for some of the... unsavory... moments of this malls history.

@@DyingRetailIt was a nice mall! My dad lived up there in Cville for several years, and we went there several times when I visited in the late 90s and early 2000s.

I am glad you enjoyed the video. I am happy I was able to get this one out. It may be awhile before I can get another for a bit. I’m taking care of my elderly parent. If Belk left you’re right but since they own one of the stores outright, I think they’re staying. It did have traffic when I was there.

Despite having spent my entire life to this point on the other side of the world from this mall, I grew up on the internet in the early 2000s and am intimately familiar with it thanks to it's most (in)famous regular visitor and his antics, many of which at that time took place within and around this mall. So interesting to see someone actually do a full walkthrough of it.

Good grief, shoppers from Richmond VA used to make the journey to shop here.

@@DyingRetail I hear ya. But it was billed as a cool place to shop and eat; good restaurants. Back then Richmond was lacking.

This is my hometown mall. Its so sad to go there because i remember how awesome it was when I was a kid. Its just so depressing. Hopefully Homedepot will be some revitalization! Thanks for the video!

4:35 This bin store used to be up by the former Sears before they closed that area off. Also, $12?? I've never seen a bin store charge more than $8 or so their first day of the week after stocking. 6:59 There was a Sbarro there too, next to Chick-fil-A and the Chinese place. 8:14 The store on the left was a Victoria's Secret. There was a Men's Wearhouse-type place past it, up at the corner. On the right starting where you are was Justice, Foot Action, Gap. 14:09 After Starbucks left, this was a New River Coffee Company for a while. It was actually pretty good. 15:21 If I remember right, there used to be a Waldenbooks either in the JABA (Jefferson Area Board for Aging -- social services for seniors) space, or in one of the nearby spaces. I lived in the area for a number of years, and this mall was never super busy. When Sears left, that wing of the mall started to necrotize. The chain stores that were having problems of their own didn't help.

Wow! Thanks for the extra info. There were some things that are hard to find in the papers on this place. With only 4000 people on grand opening I felt that was a pretty weak showing.

Great vid and voiceover Keith! Glad to see you back in action! This mall really sucks. Usually I see something cool in any dead mall, but not here. It’s not the lack of stores, it’s the overall design. All those exterior shots had me thinking this place was going to be wow inside.
@DyingRetail

Thanks bro. Still have family issues. Don’t know when next video will come right now. The problem here was the entire Sears wing is cut off. So that cut the walk short and the Penney store is owned by the county for emergency services.

Ha i knew each street you were on lol. Ten years ago that mall was soooo different. Now its a ghost town and not even remotely hanging on. Its funny because the mall in Lynchburg va was all but dead while fashion square was thriving fast forward fashion square is dead and river ridge mall is now the hot mall. Good videos! Ohh for those not familiar the area around this mall in the video has MANY new stores in strip malls or stand alone spots. So the city is thriving just not this mall 😢
