Awww I love Prue’s quip about “it’s the women’s job to save the day.” It works on a meta level because there was a huge explosion in female heroines in media in the 90s and 2000s but also because I love Billy’s totally straight “oh- neat!” acceptance.

Yeah it's actually refreshing, since as 'The Hero' of a 1950s B-movie, he just assumes he has to follow that script and he's like 'oh that's how it is in this world, cool' - and looking relieved that he doesn't have to do anything lol

I've always found it cringy - and with the ridiculous films making women think they can have the same strength as a man in a one on one fight, it makes it even worse.

@MegaMagicdog it's supernaturally themed, which means many characters, both female and male, have super human abilities. Why does it only bother you when a female character has super human abilities? While it's true this is a great parody of horror films, to a lesser degree it's a parody of Charmed itself! There's a line in which they think they already defeated the demon, and are cleaning up a mess at home. Piper mentions something to the effect of, "Don't we usually just start finding out about this guy, rather than vanquishing him so fast?". Thanks also for confirming what I had always thought of the Phoebe/Billy relationship! So sweet and innocent like a first boyfriend. It's also important to note that when Season 4 rolled around, the original script for "Bite Me" was supposed to involve another movie called, "Kill It Before It Bites". Obviously a vintage 50s vampire movie that Phoebe uses as a reference to learn about vampires and how to defeat them. However I do not know if Billy was going to return.

I agree the moral panic over various media is excessive and, no, technically media can't turn you into something you're not BUT I think people who have unfortunate leanings in the direction of violence or people who don't watch ANYTHING besides violence will destroy their brains and frustratingly give the moral panickers an example to point to. It really makes things harder for those of us with balanced moderate habits who just want to enjoy our favorite media as a method of relaxation.

Interesting idea to compare the feminism of buffy and charmed... I think it's a bit like arguing whether ice cream or pizza is better.. Buffy, and her friends, were teenager, the series ended when buffywas about the age phoebe was whrn charmed started. Charmed were women, working, marrying, having children..and saving the world of course ;) But the feminism in charmed, for my taste, felt very grounded and nuanced, especially the dynamics piper had with leo..

With joss whedon at the helm of buffy, I’d definitely say charmed was more feminist, at least while Constance burge was still in a position of authority. Once brad kern took over completely, and the sisters began wearing the skimpiest outfits television would let them get away with, then I’d say the pendulum swings back towards buffy
@BetterWithBob Жыл бұрын
I mean, the later seasons still make interesting points that you didn't see in Buffy - Piper became a mother, was still presented as the most powerful person in the story and also got to be put in the traditionally male role of the mentor. Skimpy outfits aren't automatically anti-feminist, since that was the mainstream fashion at the time, and when fashion changed by the last two seasons, so did the skimpiness.
@foreverkent2225 Жыл бұрын
@@BetterWithBob that’s true. Though instead of storylines involving demons coming after Wyatt or him being a supernatural baby, show some episodes that actually show Piper going through the more relatable everyday struggles of being a new mom, like balancing work and family. They showed a lot in season 4 how demon fighting interferes with her having friends and a normal life. They could’ve shown her wanting to do the regular new mom things, like befriend other moms, or breast feed, and have demon fighting interfere with that. I will concede though that they did course correct in season 7 and 8. Now all this is me nitpicking, it was still an all female led action series and I still love season 5 as one of my favorites. Simply for Paige’s red hair alone lol.

@@BetterWithBobBuffy basically becomes a foster mother for Dawn, especially in s7 which is kind of all about nurturing the next generation as a strength more powerful than any of the brute more “masculine” domination of fighting that had come previously. But either way I don’t think you need to compare women or drag one down to build the other up. They both have their strengths & weaknesses as far as shows run by men about women go. Nor do you need to make excuses for their wardrobe, Alyssa Milano has even explicitly called it out as “running around half naked to appeal to a male audience.”

Being a different sexualized mythical creature each week isn’t exactly what I’d call the “female lens.” Joss is more famously toxic but Brad Kern is no saint either. & I really feel as showrunner he had a heavy hand in the Alyssa/Shannen on set drama, as we’ve since learned many showrunners did (Mark Schwahn, Matthew Weiner, Lenkov, Lindelof, etc) which studios enabled (probably to keep casts from pulling a Friends & collectively bargaining.) Anyway, no need to discredit any of Buffy or Willow’s relatable female experiences to bolster the Halliwell sisters. They both have their strengths & weaknesses.

I think it's been taken up to 11 these days concerning sensitivity. I mean they've slapped trigger warnings on animated films cause they might offend people due to how certain characters are depicted. Hell, they even called Michael Myers, a character known for killing everyone in his path, homophobic because he killed a gay couple in Halloween Kills. That's kinda insane to come to that conclusion since, as I mentioned, killing is kind of his thing no matter who it is.

Well back then they called him a misogynist because he killed three sexually active women in the first movie, so it's never really gone away. Debra Hill was especially annoyed about that interpretation
