Darryl is actually my favorite Charmed character. When I watched the show for the first time as a kid I thought he will end up becoming a whitelighter because he is so kind and caring and always helps sisters. I was convinced the show will at some point reveal that Darryl is a future angel and the reason he is so attached to sisters is because it's his destiny to become magical too. I was so shocked when that didn't happen. I think Darryl deserved to become whitelighter more than Brody did

Darryl is one of my favourite characters and it is still possible for him to become a whitelighter as he hasn't died yet when he does he will be a prime candidate to become one. Darryl has been touched by magic and magic will always find him. Also I always consider the true end of Charmed is "something wicca this way goes" as the show first episode was "something wicca this way comes" Darryl starts and ends the show.

Darryl he is my favourite character also but he hasn’t had enough credit if they gave him a good storyline to become a white lighter or an avatar he would have been in the same position as Leo but there was another Officer in charmed name Kyle the elders Made him a white lighter so he was the only police officer that got turned into a white lighter so this is interesting why Darryl she never got enough credit and why the scenes were cut with his wife Sheila and his kids he had two boys And I heard that he always knew the girls the three of them were witches so this is strange I feel like his character was very misguided and mislead it

I actually have a problem watching season 8 on rewatches because it doesn't feel like Charmed without him. I have a much easier time just pretending that the show ended with season 7. Is that bad? Sure. But 🤷‍♀️

I always appreciated the Prue and Darryl relationship after Andy’s gone. Something I missed after Prue was gone. And season seven was a good season for Darryl. I liked his ending even though I would’ve liked to see him come back or mentioned in the series finale. Thanks for doing this video!

I just don't see, even with no development of him to the same length or scale, them doing that to Andy had he survived. It suggests turmoil with writers and maybe their views of him. Then Chris to still go. It was like "fine, we'll write you in... but you won't like it".

It always bugged me how Sheila seemed to do a complete 180 on how she felt about the sisters and him helping her. I understand that it put him in danger a lot of times, and that was likely how she got to that point. But as you said, they never SHOW it happen, so it just seems jarring when she changes her viewpoint

Ironic that Darryl was no longer in season 8 and here comes Henry, Paige’s boyfriend who turned to be her husband was the new cop. But Darryl’s character was so good knowing that there was a human / mortal who knew about their secret.

It's not ironic at all. Hollywood had (and still has) a serious taboo about non white men (especially black men) getting with white women. The Charmed Ones either dated or married damn near all of their major male characters. Even one offs tended to be one of the sister's flings. But that wasn't about to happen with Daryl, which is why we got an offscreen wife for the first few seasons. So, Daryl became more of a Token Black Guy than an actual character, in spite of what the creator says. It's really easy to figure out once learn Hollywood's dirty little secret.

All the girls had selfish moments include Prue she was cable take someone for granted like sisters did to Morris but I think Prue had affect on them that ground them bit and balance them if one of the sisters treat treat Morris like later did later season and rest wouldn't go along with it after Prue die the sisters became more selfish and use magic for personal gain When Prue was around even Prue herself misbave she had effect on trem to behave better The sisters lost bit mini mother figure when Prue die And it affect their behaviour

I think it's more a combination of Prue dying and what she went through with Cole making Phoebe develop a lot of bitterness and entitlement, and it's when she loses her powers that she gets knocked down to earth and becomes more like how she used to be

She never stops helping the innocent, she does try and find a balance which is difficult which is something each sister has done. I never took too much notice of not seeing behind closed doors in Darryl's life but now you mention it, I did much prefer it once Sheila came along. It gave his character some much needed fleshing out. And yes, I'd like to have seen more of it over the course of the series. Darryl was always a favourite of mine and I hated what the sisters did to him in S6. One of the many reasons that season was one of my least favourites. But to see his character come full circle in S7 was rewarding.

I feel as though it's ignored or glossed over how much the sisters did for him as well. They tried to protect him from the supernatural world but he wanted to be involved, Phoebe had to talk him out of taking the fall for Cortez to let him know he was their problem, Leo went to prison for him so that he could look good and get his promotion, Prue and Phoebe saved him from Emilio and the guardians, Phoebe helped him find Sheridan even though her disappearance benefitted them, they risked their lives to save his, Piper tried to break him out of jail, they saved him from evil universe Leo and Chris, and the many times they helped him catch a suspect or solve a case.

@@BetterWithBob While I agree with a lot of your takes and thoroughly enjoy your charmed videos I will slight disagree here , Most if the situation the charmed ones help Darryl is to help fix or cover up a previous situation or mistake . For example Leo allowing himself to be arrested only happened because of the amount of supernatural cases and you explained why Darryl didn’t want to leave prison and they did a pretty crap job at protecting from the supernatural world at times .

I loved Darryl. One of my favourite scenes is him asking Piper if she froze a crime scene and that she should not do that! Also, when finding out they are witches, he just does not want to know the intricasies, he only wants to know what is needed - a character development as he was sceptical each time Andy mentioned magic and witches in the first episode. I hated what they did to his character after the whole Barbarus trial and Inspector Sheridan. It also fascinated me that he told his wife about the sisters and she just accepted the fact that magic is real. It was nice seeing him again in the comics with powers and all, but I missed the real Darryl from season 6 onwards.

I think Darryl suffers from the change in direction of the show. Early on, it was much more grounded in terms of storytelling and largely keeping keeping the supernatural world speculative. As they leaned more into this, it felt more and more that he wasn’t required week in week out. I think if they had given him just a touch more of an arc early on then it would have been harder for them to leave him behind. It’s a real shame because Dorian Gregory is a brilliant actor and deserved a more meat like we got later on. (And the lower decks idea is a fantastic concept and I am now angry they didn’t do it - so thanks for that haha!)

What's most appalling is how casually dismissive the Sisters themselves are of Darryl. There's a quiet, implicit consensus that he's solely there just to help them. There's no gratitude. His outside life, that's another excellent point regarding the writing, but on daily rewatching, it's awful seeing how they just sort of use him, talk shortly to him, or talk down to him without appreciating his presence. I'm not saying Darryl should be praised -- not at all, but given his identity as the sole Black character playing a crucial role in their lives, it doesn't looking very charming.

Sometimes it felt that way but others it just seemed like "okay there's a job to do". When Phoebe tells Sheila about what happened, she's very understanding and empathic towards Darryl, and she had also insisted on taking the fall for what happened to Cortez so he wouldn't have to. In A Paige From the Past, Piper is more about trying to stop the ghosts as quick as possible before they hurt someone and ruin Phoebe and Cole's lives, and Prue tries to keep him out of danger all the time and he insists on going in anyway

These singular examples provided are all well and good, but as a whole, in the fullest scope, it leaves much to be desired. It’s another example of how perspective and diversity needs to extend beyond just the actors to behind the scenes.

Darryl not being given more screen time & development is actually very significant to how the audience perceives him & his importance to the sisters. It's a pretty common short-hand in tv series that side characters of importance are given dedicated scenes even if it doesn't move the main plot along or entirely relevant to the main characters. This short-hand is even used in reality tv (think "randomly" focussing on contestants only for them to be eliminated or winning). The audience is forced to form a personal relationship by making that character appear as the main character for the moment & showing the world from their perspective. We never get to see the world of Charmed from Darryl's perspective. This makes it hard to believe that Darryl is all that important to the sisters even when they say he is. IMO any sympathy we have for Darryl is thanks to Dorian Gregory's talent. We're given these scenes with every other re-occuring side character so it's hard to not see this as racist. Audiences are not given the chance to empathise with the one black character.

I would have loved to have seen the slow decline of what Sheila started feeling about the sisters. Or the aftermath of him almost dying and how the whole family had to deal with a dark cloud over them. I also would’ve been happy with at least a picture at the end of Daryl and his family with them. they got this whole he’s family narrative but never actually treat him like family.

I know the picture thing was because the budget for the finale was so tight they couldn't use any of people not already appearing in the episode - they'd need a royalty to use their likeness. They technically couldn't afford Leo either, but a bunch of the cast and crew took paycuts to allow Brian Krause to appear

I did read something re: Prue where Brad Kern says he was told they couldn't use pictures because they'd have to pay Shannen's per episode fee for them but later realised the network could have been lying and they just didn't want to still be promoting her.

I loved this character. Personally, this was probably due to the fact that I could not keep my eyes off the actor when’re he appeared. Like. Every. Time. What a hunk - and those episodes where he wore tight sleeveless muscles shirts, *swoon*. Having got this off my chest, I enjoyed Darryl’s character development-what little there was- over the series. He is really handsome, I agree. But what I like more is that caring brotherly attitude and desire to help and save lives, that's what makes him the coolest character to me. Sisters have powers, he doesn't, yet he saved just as many lives as they did. He saved magical and non-magical beings (on his duty as a cop in non-magical cases) while being 100% mortal with 0 powers. In my oppinion that makes him more badass than any other character

Another great charmed video, it was really good in highlighting the high and low points for the character. Darryl never did feel like he was there for representation purposes purely which is great in retrospect. The attempt of a diverse charmed reboot really enraged me because to make the characters Afro Latina and not cast afro latinas was just a joke especially with how little speaking roles Latin people especially Afro Latin people have in film and television

It's also objectively sexist, treating the original Halliwells as interchangeable and too old to be the protagonists anymore, since ageism is a big industry problem too and that's something the original at least handled better (letting the mothers and grandmother be the heroes). The Craft sequel/reboot also sold itself on a more diverse cast, but none of the two WOC got much of anything, when Rochelle of the original was beloved because she had her own story and we knew exactly who she was (the issue was that there wasn't enough of her)

I remember being so upset when he didn’t return for season 8 but his ending was in-tune with his character outside of the sisters. Darrell had every right to say no to the sisters about using his soul and other times. I wish there was an episode where the sisters took accountability for their actions and how it’s hurts other namely Darrell. As much as I love Charmed and series like it they definitely forget to hold the “heroes” accountable most times. Darrell is one my favorite characters in the show. I wish that we could have seen a lot more of that inner conflict and family conflict. Great video!!!

For me as a little Black boy who looooved Charmed, Darryl was SO important to see on screen. I very much loved his relationship/friendship with Prue after Andy died and the writers missed the opportunity to really get into their dynamic, but to be honest it seemed like the other sisters couldn't care less about him and how much he put his job at risk to help them and I never liked that! They really should've given him better character development and focused more on keeping the continuity of the show instead of throwing random new characters at us!

One of the reasons I think why African American characters specifically seem "too perfect" occasionally, I think is done on purpose so the audience (whether racist, or not) can't having negative to say, or at least that's what they're aiming for. While this is Charmed and not an analysis on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, in that film there were other reasons to question the relationship, such as how quick and sudden it is, where as their focus and shock was his race. The same can even apply to his parents meeting his white girlfriend. They're both adults and highly successful. Most parents number one dream back in the day was their daughter to marry a lawyer, or a doctor, and that is exactly what her parents got, but yet they were taken back by the announcement at first. I bring this up, because I always felt like Daryl was something similar, only as you stated was merely a "token" in this story, not a main character, and done simply to have more inclusion in the cast of characters and to use at their disposal. To be honest, I'm surprised they even introduced the concept of his wife, considering it seemed as if they only bring him on the show to use him only in reference to the sisters and nothing more, especially since Andy was out of the picture. If it weren't for Andy's inclusion in the beginning Daryl would have less scenes, or perhaps none at all and wouldn't have existed like he originally was. I kind of wonder what really inspired them to create this character (since he wasn't in the pilot) and if they intended him to really be this way, or it just unintentionally went in that direction. If Andy stuck around longer I wonder how the direction of Daryl would have went. I feel Daryl would have been kicked out of the last season regardless, since even Leo was not in a lot of the last season due to budget cuts. Another great video!

Dorian did say in an interview last year that they wanted a Mel Gibson-Danny Glover dynamic for Darryl and Andy, and then TW King just left for whatever reason - stories ranged from wanting to do soap operas instead, asking for more screen time and the writers not knowing what to do with him, or him and Shannen not getting on

I didn't read that yet, but I've heard all kinds of mixed stories about TW King "leaving" the show and why, but didn't know about the origin of Daryl not existing, then existing suddenly and why. It's good to know they at least had an idea and it just fell through rather than this being their intention all along. Do you know if they ever thought about a spin-off initially if they were really popular? Kind of like, how Angel on BTVS eventually had his own show? I also felt like Daryl randomly coming in and giving information did seem like his had his "own show off screen" like you said, especially since some of his scenes just felt like a different vibe from a supernatural type of show. And it reminded me of when Angel would randomly show up on BTVS and because I didn't watch Angel at the same time I would be like, "What is he doing here?"

The person who made the video then answered my question as to what inspired them to create Daryl and what dynamic they were going for when it came to Andy and Daryl initially. It was simply a question of origin, which I think should be a topic be allowed to discuss. The OP of the video even talked and referenced the unaired pilot themselves (1:10) in this video, hence why I was even inspired to ask the question in the first place. @@Rachel-xu4br From what I know, the unaired pilot was more of a proof of concept to pitch to the network and it wouldn't have aired anyway since it was only 25 minutes long. When the show was picked up, they reshot scenes to pad it out to 40 minutes and also accommodate recasting Andy and Phoebe's actors. I can only assume adding Darryl in was to provide a new source of conflict since Andy could find out about Prue and have another cop to hide things from, and likely to add some diversity since the WB was the hip young network at the time

Right about the time he almost died for them, is when I lost respect for the sisters. Their entitlement behavior and ignoring his fears really pissed me off. Especially Paige. When she stole his soul after he said "NO" when they wanted to get into Valhalla and then when she got an attitude because he wasn't waiting by the phone at the station when she called and she couldn't find him because of the woman who she was helping got beat up by her ex..I was done. Phoebe telling him to get over the ordeal that happened to him after she confronts him outside at her friend's wedding, when he served her a warrant for Chris's arrest. Piper hanging up on him when he called needing answers of what was going on... Darryl wasn't being selfish. It's bad enough that his wife has to worry as a cop's wife, but then double that with worrying about the supernatural world killing him too. The audacity of the sisters getting mad at him for putting the needs to his family first, when they were willing to go above and beyond to protect each other...and especially when Chris was in danger. The man had to uproot his family to the East Coast just to get away from their demanding reach. After the Cleaners trial they should have decided to back off from using him anymore because of how much more dangerous things were getting and they wanted his wife and kids also out of harm's way and to make sure they didn't bring on Darryl's death and have to look his wife and kids in the eyes ever again...

So in the midsts of the George Floyd protests in 2020, I randomly remembered there was an entire episode dedicated to the premise of a cop getting sentenced to execution for killing an unarmed civilian and spent the next several months trying to unpack that in tandem with the fact that the condemned cop was also the only regular black character. Darryl played off really well off his male counterparts. I loved his chemistry with Andy (even if he made fun of Andy's belief in the supernatural, he defended his buddy and partner against Internal Affairs and Rodriguez). He also played really well off Leo in All Halliwell's Eve, which had a funny reference to the succubus and a fun buddy adventure figuring out how to vanquish the grimlocks.

Darryl was such a weird character to me. I didn’t mind him at all when he was on screen, in fact I did like him a lot, but I never questioned him or what his life was. I was actually very surprised when Sheila came along because I felt it was out of the blue. We didn’t get a first meeting, she just popped up like she had always been there. As for Darryl, I didn’t question when he was in the episode or when he wasn’t, I actually didn’t even notice that he wasn’t in season eight the first time I watched it, I really don’t know how I could not take notice. I guess Charmed has always been pure entertainment to me so I never questioned anything they gave me.

@@CarmenJonnes06 I only copped to how interesting it was to have Leo be the healer, caregiver and 'heart' - the most traditionally feminine role - and still be shown as powerful and important. Overall, the show was great at showing both sides and how a strong couple needs to have both their perspectives validated before they can come together to solve things (like in Siren Song). A good chunk of 2000s shows just went with the rather backhandedly insulting 'the woman is always right' message whenever a couple had an argument

To be honest the treatment of Daryl is up there with my least favorite part about the show (alongside the decline of Phoebe who became my least favorite character) for me I always saw their relationship with Daryl as one sided, Daryl cared more about the sisters than they did in comparison, at the very least he sacrificed more and didn't really get anything in return. What Season 6 did was highlight it, and tbh all of the sisters were pretty bad toward him, Prue less so. There are MOMENTS I do lke between Daryl and the Charmed Ones, such as Daryl and Prue talking about Andy together after his death, a few lines he has that shows his dedication to the sisters, like defending them against Inspector Cortez because of Prue dying. In fact it shocked me watching on reruns how little the sisters gave back. Daryl would be put in situations where tbh he should have lost his job, but none of that really comes into play until Sheridan tells Shelia. Now this isn't to say they don't care about him, they do obviously. But I feel like it paints a bad picture when 95% of the time his moments with them are ONLY when they need him to bail them out legally. Why by comparison Daryl constantly states how risky it is for his job and how his character was the resident "I don't wanna know" guy. It never felt like Daryl was apart of the group UNLESS he had to specifically be involved helping the Halliwell's with law related situations. Mostly to cover for them, and to not tell or inform Sheila is honestly bad on everyone's part, especially when Daryl was in situations that could have gotten him killed or at risk of losing his job, as unprofessional as Sheridan was, she did have a point iin regards to that conflict. though I will admit it really feels like a 180 for Sheila to suddenly be against the sisters, but I think it has to do with the fact that like Daryl her perspective was rarely explored on anything (even less so) The worst thing they ever did was when Phoebe and Paige stole his soul just to use him as pawn to fight Leo in Valhalla, completely dismissing Daryl's consent. In general, they just wasted Daryl's role as being the mortal friend, usually when superhero/supernatural shows have a character like this its to project a sense of normalcy or being the normal one by comparison, but we didn't get many scenes like that. For me, outside of a few brief moments in Season 7 I wish Daryl would've gotten more moments like All Halliwell's Eve where he's directly involved with the plot and actually felt part of the gang, he even spends the entire episode in the manor helping Leo fend off a Demon. It also feels like they just had him as a regular just to have a person of color!

He was AOK to let Phoebe and Cole take the fall for crimes committed by ghosts possessing them, knowing there would be no way to exonerate them, and Piper is the one thinking of the bigger picture in that they have to stop Frankie and Lulu ASAP before someone actually gets killed

@@BetterWithBob That is a good point, perhaps this is worth considering upon rewatch, I will take a look at it. Regardless I DO like how there is a conflict where you can choose either side, I just believe Daryl's lack of involvement and the fact it felt more like he gave up more for them, made me feel bad for him.
