ANATOMY OF AN EPISODE
Examining the greatest Charmed episodes, and what makes them great
"Morality Bites" sees Phoebe receiving a premonition of her own death ten years into the future, so the Halliwells cast a spell to travel forward in time and assume the bodies of their future selves.

I say in the video that Alyssa Milano gave a very weak performance and, even when editing through the clips I was starting to question that statement. Now I fully retract that. I think I latched on to a couple of odd deliveries and reactions in that one scene. Otherwise she gives a fine performance :)

Absolutely. The moment she touches the glass pane of her cell and gets shocked: the spectrum of emotions she communicates after that in something like a second brought tears to my eyes instantly.

Character driven episodes were always so fascinating on that show. It just shows how much the series declined in plotlines after season 4 where they had to recycle past ideas without the same effect. It's so refreshing to see Piper not harp on Leo or mistreat him like she started doing later in the series, lol.

ohhh.. Phoebe really struggled with her "dark'' side through the entire series: she was evil in another life, saw her evil future in this episode, she became queen of underworld for a while and since season 5 was extremely selfish, actually so selfish when demon pretended to be Phoebe, sisters didnt even notice
@BetterWithBob

Yes I think in the episode with the Woogyman, they stated since she was the only sister to be born in the Manor close to the Nexus, she was the one most likely to be tempted to evil. Same with Wyatt

She was naively motivated by love. In the past life episode she turned to the dark side for her lover. With the Cole storyline it was some vain hope to do with his love for her.

Future Phoebe wasn't motivated by evil, future Phoebe was motivated by revenge and those who are motivated by vengeance often seek their own end. I do think you are right in thinking that she does struggle with her dark side throughout the show.

It just now occured to me that in this episode and in That Seventees Episode the timetravel aspect of magic is very on point, they could see their past versions in the past just like you can see pictures of you from your childhood and in this episode they "became" their future selves just like you become your future self when you grow older; i know that this chronology doesn't apply to the future episodes like in Paige from the past, but i think this is a cool observation
@BetterWithBob
@BetterWithBob 2 жыл бұрын
That is a neat observation. I suppose in A Paige From the Past, Paige isn't really travelling back in time; she's just in a simulation of her parents' last day that can't really be changed 🤔But perhaps since that's run by Clyde, the sisters themselves are powerful enough to change the past or influence the future.

“The Wish” and “Morality Bites” are great episodes. I think Charmed’s take is very dark as well. One of the leads commits murder (and it’s shown on screen), and the witch trials are legal, public spectacles and the world just tunes in to watch and accept that a human is being burned alive on TV.
@BetterWithBob

And considering what the 2000s ended up being like, the fact that a crowd would happily watch a woman burn to death on live TV does not surprise me in the slightest

I still don't understand how Phoebe's death was supposed to stop a platform clearly built on Genocide. Maybe Phoebe was supposed to be an example for other Witches to be more careful! Also, Piper's reluctance to bind her children's powers in later seasons could've had an easy solution: Tell them the truth, So they'd be ready to face the threat one day. Don't lie as Grams did! It would be like taking away alcohol from a minor, don't lie and say alcohol doesn't exist, but don't let them have it because they are too young! They can always get their powers when they're old enough!
@BetterWithBob
@BetterWithBob 2 жыл бұрын
I think because Phoebe was the only one who'd ever got caught. She was the only one in jail to be executed. The others were just in hiding, with plenty of falsely accused ones too. Even Prue and Piper were able to preserve cover. So in that timeline, after Phoebe's execution, the other witches would wisely lay low and it would eventually go away in the long term. But if you take the theory that it wasn't a literal bad future but just a potential one caused by the Elders, Phoebe had to die for the sisters to learn their lesson and be sent to the past so the timeline could be erased.
@blxssingss
@blxssingss Жыл бұрын
I find your take on binding powers incredibly interesting. Me personally? If a was a run-of-the-mill witch in the charmed universe with a child I'd do the same. However, I don't think it would be wise for the Charmed gang to do that. As any child they have would be ultra powerful. Ergo, giving a young adult powers with no idea how to use them isn't the best. Yes like with your alcohol example you can give them a guideline on how to, but magic flows and works differently for each person in the Charmed universe. Just some food for thought
@КатяХименко
@КатяХименко Жыл бұрын
Firstly i agree with previous one on that as adults they would not be able to manage their powers and all magical knowledge of the family But I think it would not be wise to bind the children's power.Cauze it ll increase the level of danger for them.Wyatt was able to protect hinself for long enough even from very powrful demons.Without it they would have much more tragedies,problems,seeking with tears things and i guess Wyatt would be dead finally, unfortunately.One day they just would not managed to come on time.Remember the last episode of 6 season.I think it s just thank to Wyatt powers he stayed alive quite enough for the sisters and Leo figure all out and save him.And we can see Chris also started to develop quite good powers in 8 season.maybe he s not so cool as Wyatt but still a good level of power + we can see he surely smarter than Wyatt😅,so I m sure Chris can/could protect himself quite well even in childhood till help comes.I personally can not imagine how u can protect not magical children in magical family who s destiny to fight evil and all evil beings in the world dream about finishing them off.So.

Well honesty is a good policy but when it comes to Children and magic I dont think is so cut and dry. Binding powers also has another purpose in the charmedverse, it cloaks you from evil. Piper even mentions it that she realized that dealing with life is hard enough but actually as a child dealing with literal monsters??!! In "lost and bound" she ended up seeing Gram's wisdom in it. Wyatt is a perfect example of how such exposure could damage a child physically and mentally. Not too mention, depending on the power how Dangerous a child with magic can be. Parents cant monitor children 24/7... A child can do stuff in a fit even with a parent's good care and adding magic??!! 🤔🤨😂🤣

Definitely in my top ten Charmed episodes! Many fans of the show thought it would have been better to use this episode as the Season 2 premiere rather than Witch Trial (and I'm in agreement on this only because WT was so weak considering it was a season premiere). It killed me as the show went on after season 3 was we never got to see the Halliwells be as powerful as their 2009 selves were shown to be. Even with Prue gone, we should have seen Phoebe and Piper be able to do at least some of the things they were capable of here. In fact, their powers were totally messed up one Prue was gone and the initial plan Connie Burge had for the sisters (three powers each Paige exempted since she wasn't supposed to exist) was ignored. I also think the show runners missed an opportunity to bring back Pratt when Cole was forced to leave the DA's office and went on the run. He could have been the guy who was still a mortal threat to the girls, always suspicious of strange goings on and Cole's disappearance. I didn't know that the Charmed comic had selected Elise to be that innocent friend that Cal Green killed. Many fans had thought Paige could have been that victim. With Phoebe working at the newspaper, it would have been a great storyline to have Cal Green return to do an interview, come across Paige (who would be meeting Phoebe for lunch or something) and getting a date with Cal Green, while Phoebe would have to hold herself back knowing what kind of man he was and to warn Paige of what he was capable of and this time not misusing her powers but getting justice for the victims he already hurt.

The weird thing is that Phoebe knew about her past life and future life, yet she does the same bullshit by ending up and falling in love with Cole. Despite knowing he is a demon she tried to ignore his demon half and say things like oh, he have a good side, a human side. She tried to save him time and time again only for her and her sisters to ignore him when he needed help. Phoebe misuses her power's so much she had them taken away. She was so out of control i wished her sisters pointed it out to her.

Just saw this ep analysis and I agree with your Girlboss feminism take and burnout. The reason why this is my top 3 fav ep, is that foretold the future (no pun intended) of millennials and Gen Zers. We are legit told that we must work hard, sleep is useless, and being influencers is the main thing to be successful . Prue was the best foreshadowing of our current state. Prue‘s sadness of her future is because of people‘s surprised reactions of her having sisters. Meaning Girlboss feminism actually hurts women/sisters as well. Anyway that’s why this is in my top 3.

I am currently on my first complete Charmed series marathon which was started by this channel, and I am a little surprised to learn that this episode is so... beloved, apparently? The character moments were great, very true, but the morality of the episode felt so very much off to me, it seemed like a strange filler episode at parts. And now I have to talk about it, apologies for the essay. First, as I remember, future Phoebe didn't just "dislike the verdict", the murderer was guilty and only free on a technicallity. Justice had failed. Now, the reaction of her future self was drastic, but the lesson of "we protect the innocent, not punish the guilty" rings hollow still to me, considering that 'protecting the innocent' so far in most episodes resulted in the destruction of some demon or similar being. Dealing punishment in retaliation to bad actions that mortal law could not account for has before and continued to be their duty, this line has already been crossed, the sister are executioners in the end - or Hunters, like the Winchester brothers. I see little justification given by the episode, why this man who did things so terrible the show only implied them but never spelled them out, should deserve more mercy? It seems inconsistent to me from the writing aspect. Now, distinguishing between a human life and a demon might make sense within the mythology of the show, but up to this point it has never been really established, I think, and despite their lack of basic human empathy those demons are for the most part still unique sentient beings - or people, which the sisters killed without much regard or second thought. Or doomed them to torture in some hell dimension? Which... isn't better, honestly. Second, the slippery slope does seem very contrived. Yes, she was willing to use her powers in some petty way, but going from there to murder seems equally unconvincing as the "Daenerys killed some slavers once, we should have expected her to burn every child in this city for no reason whatsoever"-argument. More important, Phoebe never did the deed, this was some constructed reality she has not lived through yet, it could have been made to present any scenario imaginable. In effect, Phoebe was burned alive for the crime of making some man's shoes a little dirty, this was the whole extend of her transgressions yet. Or she was targeted because her motivations were tainted? In which case she was punished for thoughtcrimes. The lesson here is "never step out of line, or we will make you suffer", "might makes right, only if we do it", not a genuine lecture in humility and compassion. It just is too extreme and disproportionate to be anything else. So, yeah... the sisters bowing down to this cruelty that is done to Phoebe and calling it justice and deserved was a really disturbing thing to watch. I think, this may have been the only act of evil in the show that truly hurt me, the demons are so "always chaotic evil" it borders on satire sometimes, but this was pure gaslighting; "it was my fault he hit me, really. I shouldn't have angered him." But maybe I am alone with this perspective, if the episode is so beloved? I don't know. It is memorable, very much so, but it makes the Powers That Be look extremely authoritarian and callous, and maybe that is the point, but I am not sure yet if Charmed is actually willing to explore this ambiguity of the Light side later? I will see, and I am very excited to learn more.

Can I give a shout to how amazing Prue's power is? She blew up the attic in a stronger manner than Piper could. She also didn't need Phoebe's power because she can preform them herself greater than Phoebe like when she had her power in Love Hurts. Or when Prue became the empath and occupied both physical and astral form with control. Prue was even able to See that the they were in a time loop around the same time Phoebe's power told her and Piper was kind of slow. Maybe she should have studied her homework instead of sitting in the back of class drawing on her jean Screaming Prue like Jan screamed Marcia. Prue was even able to figure out that Cole was Balthazar long before Phoebe realized or had a vision. My theory is Prue has all of their powers but cannot unlock them. Phoebe told Paige that she needs to hurry up and get to the level that Prue was because they have the same power. Prue just perfected conjuring beasts. She said that to Paige on the episode they switched bodies. And a call back to the first episode, are we going to forget that the first time Prue attempted to use her powers when she had the knowledge she teleported the creamer into the coffee. Maybe Prue can teleport. I want to see what her power is in the Warrens. Cryokinesis was not a warren power. Might have been a potion or the opposite of Piper's Pyrokinesis. Maybe their powers come and grow based on their personalities like the incredibles. First movie Violet gains a second power. Sequel JakJak developed many because he's smart like his mother and powerful like his father. And how did Phoebe Bowen have powers if her father is of the Warren Line when Grams although disputed by everyone who came next. Remember Phoebe got her flight from the genie. The Spin-Off I want is Melinda Warren (P!nk) who is apart of the coven with the 1st Supreme Scathatche (Lady Gaga) competing in the Seven Wonders for Supreme. It should be an HBO special. Dark like Chilling Sabby, and erbs and potions as drugs like euphoria, and sex like True Blood. Give a node to noir and gore for the aged and seasoned Charmed fan. Ryan Murphy meets Tales From the Crypt esk. We Have the power to do it. Lets start the movement #FreetheCharmedOnes get them off the shelf of people who clearly don't know what to do with it and put it in the hands of the seven women. Burge, Hughes, Rhodes, Doherty, Combs, McGowan, and Milano. We get a restart and continuation. Throw Once Upon a Time Money at this. They can make them all look like the Craft era.

Prue was never meant to be an empath. She was in a lot of pain even when she learned to embrace the emotion. That's another one of my favorite episodes.

Rewatching this im thinking if Phoebe used her power to expose the man isn't that also personal gain i mean because you know she will be doing it for her reason also mabey ehen he got out of jail he would have tried to kill Phoebe or Phoebe kill him oh and that guy that executed Phoebe what if he saw Phoebe exposing him but with magic so then the events of the haunt of witches happen and then the guy that killed the person that Phoebe loves doesn't get punishment because the other guy thinks that the evidence is made from black magic and how it's fake So really the best thing to do is for Phoebe to kill the man learn from hrr mistake and the man still feel pain

That's actually not true: the lesson not to punish the guilty is a lesson she never forgets! Yes, in hyde school reunion she allows a human to be killed, which was iffy, but not done for punishment, but to save chris, stop the murder happy human and i can imagine they were strugling to find another way out on the dpot. And yes, she uses magic for personal gain later, but not to punish abyone, but to speed up finding her "soulmate" wrong as well, i admit, but understandable if we accept that she is a character who craves love and always felt a bit left out...and she had the most painful love stories of all the charmed ones...so yeah, she was desperate, but it is not the same lesson as the one here

5:26 Not necessarily. I mean, the Charmed universe obviously isn't our universe due to the existence of actual magic and magical creatures so the 08 crash might not have happened there.

Honestly as much as I hold Buffy over Charmed, (because how many things can compare to Buffy in terms of a body of work? It's just unfair to most shows, even the high quality ones like this.) I would put this episode over most Buffy episodes, even the wish, because like the better Buffy episodes, it had lasting character development as a direct result. And I love the wish, especially the secret character development they snuck in with Anya and vampire Willow. Also I agree on the difference with Wanda. I thought she was insane not grieving and when they switched it to she's sad, I was pretty disappointed. Granted trauma does break people in a lot of disturbing ways but this and Buffy actually give you the mental process necessary to reach that dark place without excusing or flat out brushing off the behavior, for the most part anyhow. It especially made me sad because I love Wanda as a character. So thank you. Still say "Wrong thing done for the right reason, still the wrong thing." And yes, it does start with small things and there are psychological reasons for that. My trilogy is heavy on that theme, though unintentional (no not published sorry) and I also had a character I accidentally broke that turned dark and both her and her daughter find their way back to the light through plenty of messes. So yeah, endeared pheobe to me. Also love Devil Wears Prada and thought it did a pretty good job actually. But to each their own.

Ya know I have to wonder why Elizabeth Olsen dropped the accent because in universe it makes no sense for her to be speaking with an American one.
@BetterWithBob
@BetterWithBob Жыл бұрын
I remember her starting to fade it out around Infinity War, and I got the impression that Wanda was trying to lose her accent to blend in. Or it just naturally changed after being around Americans (well people speaking with American accents in Nat's case). Although if you hear her in interviews, it's still different from her natural voice, so there's a little hint of an accent in there.

This is honestly one of my least a favourite episodes. From beginning to end, it feels like fear mongering on behalf of the elders. Right up until the point where Leo is the reveal to be the one, who had put the spell into the book. Listen to us, don’t use your magic for personal gain or you’ll be burned alive. Listen to us don’t marry your Whitelighter, or you’ll lead a miserable life. Prue feels less personally targeted by the spell, but she is also made to deeply feel the impact of using magic for personal gain as she nearly loses both of her sisters as a result of leading a “selfish life”. One to death and one to simply growing apart. This episode spelled the bringing of the end to what little credibility that the elders had managed to build in my mind before this point. They wanted the sisters afraid and controllable. So they more or less manufactured a worse case scenario to put the fear of disobedience into them.
