Wow MARK you’re really hitting all the feels with this episode for me I used to own a Charvel model three back in the day it was a HSS with a black pick guard and white body and a Kahler it was the first really good electric guitar I ever owned my grandfather bought it for me back when I was like 15, and since I’m left-handed I have no choice but to flip it upside down and restring it I have no idea the time what I was doing I’m surprised it even played in tune it sure was not intimated, I even shaved into the body on the upper horn so I could reach all 22 frets i eventually had someone rebuild it for me with a left-handed Warmoth body since in the 80s everyone hated left-handed people and rarely made any left at models much less the cool companies like Charvel and Jackson,rock on bro 🤘🏼🎸🎶

Glad to hear you enjoyed it Michael! Haha I don't think any guitar builders hate lefties! I just think the guitar market is a super competitive market to sell to, there are a lot of great options. And since 15% of guitarists are lefties, there is a much better chance of selling them if they make right handed models more. I feel for you guys, but I understand from the business side, why they can't do everything for lefties they do for the righties.

@@GuitarGuts2 yeah i agree i was just venting lol 😂 you gotta remember their were very few options back in 1985 compared to now,even kramer just released 2 new lefty models and schector offers like 10-12 lefty models,wish they had that kind of verity when i was 15-19 years old

I used to have a 2011 Charvel San Dimas in fire engine red back in 2013 or so. Had it all kitted out with FU-Tone hardware and a D-Tuna, had the nice SKB case with it too. LOVED the ever-loving crap outta that guitar and got it for a steal of a deal (picked it up used for like 500 bucks CAD shipped to my door from the other end of my province). Thing screamed like a demon and played like a dream. Unfortunately, sold it during my stay at university to stay on afloat financially. Still miss it. Every couple years I make a post on my local classifieds looking for it, sadly no one ever replies. She's a goner :(

Ah man, one day you gotta build another! I have had 2 of those and loved them both but was offered too much money so I sold them. I do miss them, but at the same time, I have a lot of other guitars I really like, I am happy with what I have.

My favorite brand! I particularly like the Japanese models of 2010 and the Mexican from 2016 on. The Desolation models were produced in China just after the Fukushima accident, before the production was moved to Mexico. About the Japan San Dimas models: can you imagine that, at the time, they came for less than USD800 with a case?

Charvels are iconic for a good reason! Their new models are as good as any of them IMO, they are one of the companies that really kept up their quality. Their necks are maybe the best ever for maple unfinished necks.

i saw one in my local GC, it was a used double cut black translucent hard tail. it played awesome, super cool guitar. I didnt buy it, but i thought about it all night and decided to go back the next day and pick it up. when i went in it was sold. one of the biggest guitar regrets of my life. Also, i started doing some upgrades on some guitars and have got so much info from you. you have a great series, i watch every episode.

Ah thanks for saying that! Yeah, they are legendary guitars, some of the best!!

There’s a vid on KZbin called “The Charvel Gang”, pretty good watch. There’s also an 90 minute interview with Grover floating around that’s pretty informative. Both are a bit more informative than Wikipedia

I've got the black and white Jackson SDX, which is pretty similar to that San Dimas. Love that guitar to bits.

I always loved the look of that plain white So-Cal with the black pick guard. I just wished they had 24 frets, so I ended up making my own look-alike out of an Ibanez. It's always funny to me when you introduce this as a breakfast show when it's 1pm here in the UK and I'm tucking into my lunch :-) followed by a nice cup of tea!

I am with you! 24 frets is a big deal to me! I use 24 all the time in my writing. Heck, my main guitar has 27 frets and I love that high G!

About the graphics on the guitars I believe they are just decals that they put on it and then clear coat over it because I know they do shrink and crack After Time
@GuitarGuts22 жыл бұрын
Ah okay, that would make sense from a production stand point.

I’ve always liked Schererville guitars, but only ones that do not have a Fender Headstock.

this is cool to see again after 13 years. i forgot all about the charvel desolation series. i don't understand why they were trying to copy schecter. glad they went back to what they are supposed to do in recent years.

The SoCals & San Dimas truss rods were heel adjust, you had to remove the neck.

Charvel is a brand that’s always fascinated me but I haven’t gotten my hands on one yet. I’m probably gonna track down a Charvette at some point.
@matthewbradshaw18102 жыл бұрын
Skip the charvette and just get a newer made in Mexico charvel. The charvette is just like squire to fender.

Do the fernandes guitar catalog next 😉

I think I will! I don't know a lot about Fernandes, that would be fun to look into their history and then check out the catalog I have!

its funny really. I always thought I liked certain guitars years ago like Ibanez. I still like Ibanez but since watching your shows I've learned what I really like in guitars and I feel like my tastes in guitars are very close to yours. pretty sure our skill set and hobbies are really close too. I'm all about abalone and binding and inlays and all that stuff now. especially if its on a Jackson or esp pointy headstocked guitar. I just love the pointy headstocks and now even the hockey stick style but not as much as a original Jackson. I was born in 1984 and its a personal goal of mine to buy an old 84 soloist just to keep it and also an old 90s mij soloist someday along with a sick white Hetfield style explorer. the one with the long skinny hockeystick headstock. I know Epiphone made one like that but I know nothing else about it. maybe you could do a whole episode on James and his explorers or something. I think it would be fun. of all the charvels that i know of. thats not many.. i like the normal fender looking white one. just a sweet guitar, plain and simple.
@GuitarGuts22 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea. I like the idea of doing something a little different each week on SMS, so like a QnA episode, then an axe hunting episode, then a product catalog episode and then maybe an artist gear breakdown of what they used throughout their career, I could start with Hetfield, do an EVH, KH, George Lynch, Tom Morello etc episodes.
@Zombie_13x332 жыл бұрын
@@GuitarGuts2 that would be pretty awesome man. dont forget the geeky bits too lol. who knows, maybe someday you could interview some of them? kinda like the thing you did with sasquatch. that wasn't my favorite but i still watched and learned some things. i could relate to him a little too.
