We're checking out the Charvel Pro-Mod San Dimas Bass pj iv. Is the Charvel Pro Mod something new and an update to a classic formula, or another recycle of the classic P bass template?

Nice review, I like that bass... Killer 80s vibes. I think modding your own bass can be fun, and makes the bass feel more unique. After watching you identify the pre-modded qualities of this bass I definitely got intrigued by it. I'm a sucker for traditional basses as is too... what can I say I love em all, and if I could have them all I probably would.

If you pop off the control plate on the rear the preamp has a gain control so you can roll it back to make switching from passive to active not such a big leap. I have one in the black and I really like it coming from a Fender PJ. They feel real similar but the roasted neck and active electronics really add a lot for comfort and tonal abilities.

Very cool. I would love to see these head to head with the Schecter Model T and the LTD P4. All of them are on my radar for a new bass, and they have similar design language and progressive features albeit taking it in different directions.

This would be the style of bass I'd stick with. That's what I'm discovering about myself. I don't really care much for elaborate controls, all I need is volume, volume, tone on a well made bass. The rest is in my touch. An EQ is a bonus. If i want to fundamentally change a Jazz or Precision bass' sound, I simply get new pickups & potentiometers appropriate for the inherent acoustic properties of the bass. With that said, it is nice to Superscoop or do the Midspike here and there. So this would be a nice bass to have, for sure.

I haven't played one of these but I really dig their vibe. The hotrodded Fender thing is really what Charvel started off as. The V intrigues me, because there aren't a whole lot of options for five-string Precision-style basses. Generally you have a Fender American Standard or Pro V or you have to take a leap to a Sadowsky or Lull. The ProMod V helps fill the void.

I got a 5 string pj San dimas with bartolini pickups and preamp for $650 and im pretty thrilled with it. Had to realign the neck and the nut to get the G string to stay on the board, but it feels pretty great after fixing that

I have an Epiphone rock bass from the 90's, it has a P body, J pickups and an Explorer neck, fast as hell. Also it came with a string through body hi-mass bridge with bronze saddles. A true Unicorn.

Great review ! I played this model today & liked it …very tempted to buy it. I have a Fender Aerodyne Jazz which I love but sat down it’s too neck heavy. The balance (& sound) was good with this.

Idk why but I have been falling in love with JP style's recently, my 1987 Ibanez RB808 is amazing and I love how clanky it gets for metal. But we have this model of Charvel at a music store in town, and I was lowkey disappointed because of how sharp the frets ends are. Especially for a bass that would be around 1800$ CDN with taxes, was expecting smooth frets.

That's a bummer, but it's becoming more and more common. Guitars especially once coming from overseas are not being made with wood that's been dried as long because inventory moves so fast. That means it's still shrinking, and then the move in climate causes that. It's the most common complaint I hear about instruments Anymore from many brands.

@@RodneyMcG Makes sense honestly. Just wish companies could keep up the quality more, thankfully Ibanez has been pretty good for quality on mass produced basses from what I have seen

About ten years ago I had an Ibanez blazer BL800BR with passive EMG and it was the perfect P-bass for the rock/metal genre, but unfortunately I had to sell it (the biggest mistake I made, at least in his hobby), never saw this model. on the market since that time. Now I have a fender p-bass deluxe V which is at least twice as expensive as Ibanez BUT it doesn't even close play and sound like Ibanez... I miss my Blazer... :)

I know I am late to the party but really nice review! Mine is in the mail right now. I have always modded my basses as I think most stock fender pups are trash lol. I have a 06 MIA p bass with HM bridge and SD QP pups and a mexican player series Jazz with SD QP pups and Audre preamp. I am buying the San Dimas because of the neck really but it is nice to get a bass I don't think needs work from the factory. I've been considering a J neck for the P bass for some time but the neck on my P is the nicest P bass neck I've ever played so getting this gives me the J neck on P bass I've been wanting.

@@matthewchunk3689 the neck is fantastic, really nicely dressed frets and the profile make it feel too easy to play (feels like I am cheating 😂) and I highly recommend it. I did have an issue out of thr box with thr nut being cut too deep in the E string but other than that it'd been great.

I have this same bass, but metallic green, only green and blue were available at the time. Great review, you seem to like the same things i liked on the bass, the EQ and the truss rod wheel are Killer!!! i always hated trying to adjust the neck and finally ruining the allen wrench style setup, and stripping it out, lol!!! For the money i think its a great bass, could be a little cheaper, but i guess you pay for the name and the backer(fender) anyway, Cheers!!

I myself just prefer to build my own stuff at this point, I kinda reject the strat style shapes a little bit because they're boring. For a 4 string I like 43 or 44 millimeter nut width and either p pickups or neck humbuckers like an eb0 gibson. Coupled with that i want pointy scary body shapes and nobody does exactly that unless you go custom and I have a makeshift machine shop so I decided fuck it and started building my own stuff and now I'm starting to get into doing carbon fiber neck thru stuff with wooden bodies because the heavier strings I like put lots of tension on there and I need something more resistant to that and impervious to humidity

I picked one of these up at my local shop. Agree that it’s feels great in the hand and neck is sweet. Did you notice that the preamp was noisy? Seen a few reviews showing that and commenting on shielding being poor. Just wondering if they’ve addressed this as I love the feel and pups in this bass.

I'm generally a fan of the sleeker body shapes (think Ibanez Prestige series, they're my go-to) but that's a pretty sweet sounding bass. I hope your projects are going well, looking forward to any new music from you. Question, I know you handle multiple duties with VOD, do you have any plans to use other musicians to play live?
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 2 жыл бұрын
V o d was a full band when we were based out of Los Angeles. It was pretty much exactly run like that in that I would record the full album and had musicians that would perform it live. I honestly doubt if it would become a fully realized live project again unfortunately because my experiences with dealing with musicians has just been horrific. If a unique opportunity arose, possibly or maybe a couple random pieces here or there could come together, but it's tough to spend years of your life trying to push something forward to have the people who've contributed the least do the most damage to your efforts.

@@RodneyMcG Ahhh, gotcha and I know just how you feel. I'm playing all the instruments except drums on anything I write these days and even though "live" isn't particularly feasible at least there's no drama or bitter disappointment.
