Ambassador Freeman is not only a brilliant and supremely erudite professional but he is also wonderfully articulate, possessing the rare gift of being able to distil complex ideas into a few, well chosen words which perfectly express truths in a manner which is easy to grasp.

Thank you very much to Chaz Freeman and to your wonderful platform. We are all so lucky to have the depth of knowledge and wisdom available to us at the touch of a button. This gives me hope for the world. I agree, sometimes academics have a gift for producing material sufficiently dry that it is so difficult for people to read. Prof Meersheimer sounds like he may be that kind of writer, probably unintended but to the benefit of the Zionist lobby. I am optimistic on CFs take on Gabor Mate and how the host confirmed that protesters helped stop the Vietnam war. It was more likely the draft that helped stop it! Can't believe they wanted to nuke Vietnam and to his credit Kissinger talked him out of it. Napalm was good enough. I agree, Tim Walz has is a better running mate for Kamala, but the fact that she considered Shapiro either shows her own line of thought or the pressure of congress. I think the latter. The Republican party has morphed into something monstrous. I cant help think that the overt obedience to and worship of Netanyahu is intentional, in order to wake up the US public to what is actually going on in the world. The bread and circuses agenda all across the West is so effective. We have not been watching how global power is changing, we have been getting fatter on fast food and stupefied by sitcoms, the superbowl and CNN. Thank you for introducing us to Rise and Kill first. I was talking to a buddy yesterday about the code of ethics in gangs. We focussed on the ethics part and he jokingly said ''do unto others before they do unto you". That seems to be Israeli policy! It is hard not to think how the middle east was quite peaceful under Ottoman rule, although I didn't realise the Sunni Shia animosities go back to the 14th century. Turkey's desire to be a peace maker is evident and I can see Turkey trying with China and Russia to develop that further and diffuse the tensions across the region. Oil and trade routes are obvious sticking points as well, but as CF puts it, the large USA lady, who consumes everything within reach is being milked. Love the analogy! I had never heard of Arthashastra and will try to find the Persian version of it. When discussing Iranian foreign policy, it is hard not to think of Cyrus the Great. I don't know much about Cyrus, except he was a peace maker and highly respected in the region and that Persepolis was torched by Alexander (or maybe his girlfriend one drunken night after the capture) It is ironic that Cyrus freed the Jews and helped to fund re-building Solomon's Temple. However when the Jews returned from exile they wanted their land back that others had since taken over, causing internal strife between Judea and Israel. I think Cyrus respected the Phoenician traders and shipbuilding abilities and wanted to co-operate with them. Persepolis had cedar panelling and I wonder if the then Lebanese contributed to transporting the material and construction? The Achaemenid Empire encompassed the Levant and into Thrace, so trade routes were equally important as today, but trade could only could happen with peace. Pity we couldn't adopt that approach with all our technology and communication tools. Thank you for the question on NK, China and Russia and comparison with Bruce Cummings. I think Mr Putin must recognise NK aspirations for independence and Russia is diplomatically skilled enough to manage those relationships. I think it takes pressure off China and China is probably grateful to Russia for playing this role. I think these big countries take a longer term view on regional politics compared to the Western short term thinking from election to election. I think it was Lavrov who said the world is tired of dancing to the Western tune because it keeps changing every four years. This anticipation and knife edge politics is likely a strategy to keep developing nations who are reliant on the US dollar, in constant limbo. At least the agreements between Russia China and NK will foster some stability, but hopefully NK doesn't become Russia's Israel!? That Japan and N Korea are beginning to talk also brings some hope. Also a great question on the Ambassador's stance on John Meersheimer and Jeffery Sachs. Meersheimer is a careful academic and somewhat dry and predictable, but lately he has been coming out of his shell and sniffing the breeze which is good to see. Prof Sachs is also careful but a bit naive in my view. Great smile and great passion for the environment that we should all support. I REALLY love to listen to Prof Michael Hudson, because he has worked on Wall St, he has done so much ground breaking work on the history of debt and how that affects our current situation. I love how he catagorizes the two emerging economic systems. We all know what polemics means but we should create a word or even a subject called Polomics. I take it back, Chatgpt says it does exist! The political and economical forces today are causing this seismic rift down through Ukraine, the Levant and into Africa, just like that Geeat Rift geological fault line where continental plates physically crash into each other or rip apart. We touch on this using the term 'geopolitics' but is there a more direct and obvious comparison between the forces behind the human mind and the forces of nature? Germans differentiate between science and the humanities using their ancient language and train of thought. The English language has hidden these meaning from sight. Science is Naturwissenschaft in German which translates as the knowledge of the natural world (predominantly empirical) The humanities is Geisteswissenschaft which translates as knowledge of the spiritual world (knowledge of ghosts 🤔). Anthropology tries to find empirical measuring devices for the humanities. Perhaps our mind is just a reflection of our natural surroundings or is it the other way round? I don't think we were meant to be 'masters' of nature as some modern Bibles suggest. We were meant to tend that garden and care for it.

Netanyahu is under no illusion that his actions will lead to a wider conflict that alone he and Israel cannot win But he knows also there is a secret a secret third option: he knows they can’t fight this war and win but knows they can make it bad enough that Americans have to,” After all the thunderous applause Netanyahu received for his deceitful genocide apologia speech before Congress last week, this does not at all seem like an unreasonable expectation. We’ve seen nothing from Washington these last ten months to suggest that it would leave Israel to defend itself however horrific the GENOCIDE ,whatever series of escalations they take , that lead to a major war with Lebanon Iran. or both. That is the gamble that Netanyahu and his Zionist know they have to take to achieve their abhorrent Zionist aims of a Zionist state from the EUPHRATES TO THE NILE . It is not the phrase :- FROM THE RIVR TO THE SEA that is genocidal . That is a free Palestine for all: Palestinian ,Jew and all whose faith draws them to Jerusalem and those of no faith to live peaceful and prosperous lives .. The real Genocidal intent is the Zionist aims of a Zionist State from the Euphrates to the Nile . Arabs do not hate Jews : Jews to not hate Arabs Zionist HATE BOTH There is room in a free Palestine from the RIVER TO THE SEA for all Palestinian :Jew and all whose faith draws them to Jerusalem and those of no faith to live peaceful and prosperous lives .

Mr Freeman is a pleasure to listen to. He brings up a point that I often wonder about regarding China/Taiwan. The US is using Taiwan as a 'beachhead' to use as a pretext for conflict. China seems very pragmatic in its policies, domestically and internationally, so why not seek a lasting resolution to the Taiwan issue? Take the issue off the table. The lingering tension is only solvable (like Palestine) with a political solution, so why not make it happen.

At about 16 min in Freeman is perpetuating an economic myth. Conservatives have *_never_* been prudent concerning fiscal policy. There is no way anyone can pay the tax liability until the US government first issues USD, by hiring or contracting workers, or chartering banks to issue credit. That's the whole purpose of a tax driven currency: so the State can hire everyone their imposed tax _liabilities_ (not receipts) just unemployed, to provision the public sector. No one understands this (outside of MMT). The USD does not come from anywhere else except by counterfeit. But if there are net savers after the government spends (say annual analysis here) then someone else is placed in debt unless the government spends more than it taxes back. The 'sound and prudent' finance is to not put people into needless unemployment and debt, which means (a0 hiring everyone unemployed, and (b) running a persistent deficit to satisfy private sector savings desires (spend more than you tax) especially if there is a growing population. The tax return is a redemption operation not a funding operation, so there is absolutely no need on earth for the government budget to be net zero expenditure. The budget is always balanced of course (or someone has to stay late at the accounting office) but the balance has to be net spending.... if non-government sectors desire to save the tax credits. Otherwise the whole system is in default and will be deflationary (if the population is growing and you do not want starvation and homelessness).
@Achrononmaster
@Achrononmaster 2 ай бұрын
The Republicans cannot run net zero expenditure anyway, due to the automatic stabilizers. So this myth Chas parrots is not only wrong, it is insane and stupid and worse... dangerous (fiscal austerity kills people).

Ambassador Freeman is being way too generous about US capabilities and prospects going forward. This is the one bias he cannot get over despite all the developments that put the US in a stark and steep decline. The only reason 2007 was not the end of the empire was because of the invention of shale drilling. US went from a 12-13 million barrel per day oil producer to a now over 20 million barrels per day oil produce between 2007 and 2020. This allowed the US in its worse economic struggles to actually go from a net importer of 7-8 million barrels of oil per day to a slight net exporter of oil. Can you imagine how the years post the 2007 recession would have gone if the US had to also carry a 7-8 million barrel per day oil trade deficit? If shale didn't come along the global oil market would also have been so tight that prices could have easily hit $200 per barrel. The trade deficit would have went to multiple trillions and the US would have been kaput. It was a sheer stroke of luck at the right time but it has also done nothing except dragged out the decline for another decade or two. All anyone has to do to not have to deal at all with the US is to wait out the shale production curve. In another 10 years when the shale is gone, this country is done for one way or another.

North Korea owns China everything, China fought the War against the USA, and if not 500000 chinese had defend the North it wouldn't exist. And Russia assumed the air defense in that war. Just recently Russia gave them advanced ballistic missiles. They don't need to balance China with Russia, since China and Russia are close allies, anyway, North Korea exist only because Chine defended it in 1954.

I'm impressed by Mr. Freeman's knowledge of the Korea's. However, I think it's unfair when he says that NKorea was "never willing to follow the Chinese model." How could NKorea follow the Chinese model without a "Nixonian" detente with the West? Even the Chinese would not be able to follow the Chinese model if not for that opening with the West. Doesn't the fact that NKorea desires sanctions relief, normalization with the West, and lifting of embargo suggest that NKorea does indeed what to follow the "Chinese model"? Mr. Freeman said himself that NKorea had communicated to Albright that they desired to "change sides." If both Cumings and Freeman's view of NKorea is correct, it means NKorea remains a backward militarized state in perpetuity. I don't think that's the future NKorea envisions for itself. I also find it difficult to believe that relations between NKorea and China are that prickly and difficult. At the end of the day, NKorea and China are like "lips and teeth". Thanks for another interesting discussion.
