@InsaneWiggleАй бұрын
(1/2) Mr. Varoufakis really is a wordsmith. His ability to take Jyotishman's long, meandering (but very good!) questions in fully and without much pause just churn out an eloquent and succinct storytelling explanation again and again, shows it is a skill he has honed for many years. I envy that ability to be able to get your thoughts and ideas across seemingly so easily and so well, no matter how elaborate. It must have taken tons of repetition and copious amounts of practice with various audiences of different ethnicities, classes, etc. to be at that level! I greatly enjoyed his perspective about the European Union + UK as an economic bloc being a ball and chain on developing nations, exporting deflation and unemployment. I never really thought about it in that way and flipped the words in such a way as that. That is one of the best parts of economists, is that they look at relationships so often and analyze trends over and over, that they begin to see these linkages and relationships in ways that seem so obvious, once pointed out, but otherwise are obscure and hidden. That European economic bloc really is just still a colonial model. Existing at the quality of life they are able to grab onto through the underdevelopment of the 3rd World. And even internally, through the austerity on their workers. The only departure I would make from Mr. Varoufakis, who seems much more knowledgeable than I, so it might just be how he spoke in this one interview is...I would not portray the US as this rising giant close to China. That perhaps is the European perspective, as that has been grafted onto them, by their own leadership AND the US for decades and repeated by many 3rd World leaders as well. I believe that China is rising and through China's rise, as an alternative model to the European models or the US model, this forces adaptation from industries worldwide, especially in capitalist nations. And so America is the MOST capable nation to compete with the Chinese model for the time being and as they (unsustainably) invest in industries to compete with Chinese industries, this gives the veneer of America rising as a near peer to China economically. This can be seen through the economic relationships between the US and its allies now vs the Chinese and the reverberations of this "cold war" or "trade war". During the Cold War, between the US and its allies and the Soviet Union and theirs, there was growth and development in certain nations as a byproduct, on both sides of the aisle. But today, the US is arguably siphoning from its allies and asking for too much, from its European allies, it's Asian, it's Middle Eastern/West Asian allies, it's African allies, etc. Whereas, on the other end, look at the shift in Russia, Iran, Brazil, soon Afghanistan even, etc. And then see how even North Korea is benefiting in its own way from the butterfly effect of Chinese-Russian economic relations as North Korea and Russia's military partnership is expanding and creating growth for the North Koreans. And then even look at India, that is playing the US and its capitalists to profit off Chinese divestment from the West by offering their market and then as well as profiting off the war in Ukraine through their ties to the Russians. So, I would not say that the US is truly competing with China. It's more of the US being...Goku, using a Spirit Bomb, and siphoning all the life energy of his supporters, to defeat a foe that is strong themselves and can fight into perpetuity. But this time, Goku needs the STRONGEST Spirit Bomb he has EVER needed, which his supporters will not able to give him the energy for, to defeat his enemy. Except in this case, the Spirit Bomb will 100% fail and Goku is the greater hegemonic figure and his opponent is liberating people from him. This to me points out the fundamental flaw. Which is that the US's model is completely unsustainable and a house of cards. It has these massive industries, the most powerful military in the world, massive media networks and control of many telecommunications companies and their apps used worldwide etc. And they are using massive debt to chuck at these capitalist controlled industries on the hope that these actors are invested enough in the American govt. (which they can see through lobbying capital) that if the government uses hard and soft power to try and bend the global market to these capitalists' will, that they will produce the results to crush this Chinese alternative before it develops enough and then competes against US soft and hard power. This will inevitably happen anyway. The Chinese will succeed. And the Chinese approach has been to use win-win cooperation and bilateral trade agreements throughout the Global South to aid in development in exchange for resources to triumph in their "Cold War" with the US. So as the US govt. has to continue to cede power to capitalists within particular industries in their own nation, and further anger the working class of the US, they are finding that instead of having to just quell revolutionary movements or fund wars in the Global South, which they have models for and have been doing for decades, they now have to convince longtime economic partners who economically align with the US to ignore extremely favorable trade deals that will lead to growth and development.
@InsaneWiggleАй бұрын
(2/2) And this European economic bloc is a reflection of this all, sure. As discussed in the interview, China has developed to a point, alongside certain emerging economies, to serve as an alternative to Europe in particular industries but definitely in some newer industries that are becoming more and more prominent. But we must also see the European dependency on the US. It did not just end after 2008 and Europe is estranged since. European capitalists invest in US companies and use US telecommunications companies and hedge their wealth on US financial success. As European economies suffer extreme austerity and slower growth, European capitalists have hedged on the US, with its crippling (for other nations) debt model serving as a vehicle to continue their wealth accumulation. Just like capitalists all OVER the world. And so you see two VERY different competing models in fierce competition. The US keeping its valuation up through global speculation from capitalists all the world over, as it uses debt to fund itself at ridiculous levels. Then giving marginal social welfare benefits to its citizens as appeasement. Whereas the world over, austerity is enforced and the conditions are worsened, as many neoliberal governments, still working on behalf of the capitalists, are pressuring government to worsen economic conditions in order to increase the inequality and extraction. And this facade of sustainability within the US, as a model, is just wholly unsustainable in the 3rd World and now threatening economic collapse in even European nations. And the capitalists have a far HIGHER threshold for the damage and economic collapses due to their wealth and investments abroad. And this is leading to the rise of fascism globally as the capitalists of these nations, work with government, to try and quell the popular socialist alternative movements. Whereas, with China, there is a massive economic growth that is consistently put in question by the US and its allies, through trade wars and soft power, whilst China also has to deal with its own capitalists that are extremely wealthy and now have the ears of the international capitalist class, financial journals and all. And on top of this the growing "middle class" with its own unique labor demands. Knowing full well the US and the West have mastered taking advantage of the "middle class" of enemy nations to create massive civil unrest. So China is trying to maneuver continual growth whilst trying to manage the external and internal consequences of this growth knowing they have this giant hegemonic force that is actively looking to magnify and intensify every contradiction and then strike. However, China has managed to do this by using state force on its own capitalists and continuing to deny the level of access foreign capitalists would like into their nation, whilst rushing to gain stronger relations with more of the world, through trade deal after trade deal. Essentially trying to use the promise AMERICA had given as a vision to the 3rd World during the Cold War with the Soviet Union and its allies, as an answer to this Cold War threat today. Not offering military support, very strong political support, etc. perhaps but offering the prosperity of massive development and growth amidst uncertain economic times while two hegemonic forces are at "war". An imagery and vision (not fully realized imo) that aided the US greatly in the past and they still harp on today. Essentially, how is the US able to speak at its OWN State of the Unions about "a strong middle class is a strong nation" "a rising tide lifts all boats" "opportunity economy" and then convince nations to divest from Chinese relations, when China is living up to those same ideals in practice with these same nations. Imo, a testament to this is Vladimir Putin himself. This is a deeply troubled man. Just look at his life and his career. Trying to keep sovereignty for his nation but bring it into the sphere of this European bloc. Eventually battered into pivoting into Asia, explicitly accepting Russian global positioning underneath the Chinese, strengthening ties with Iran and North Korea. Learning so much about distant Russian history to try and understand the failures of his nation and its successes. And here he is, still not a communist by any means, not in a socialist nation, but embracing the Chinese led world and trying to bring Russia as a junior partner into this future world. Much like the British did with the United States many many decades ago, as they became aware of their decline. And remember Putin has experienced the Soviet Union, in its decline sure, but he still experienced it and did not try to recreate it. And yet China, and its current model, is able to win him over and the economic ties have aided his nation greatly already. Essentially, even capitalists, skeptical of communism, who have witnessed contradictions that have grown to bring down these governments, can be won over by China, led by the Communist Party of China, with its model of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.

Mr. Varoufakis is a great mind. To contrast his pessimistic closing note I would note something optimistic: The fact that such a person was the finance minister of an EU state gives us some hope. His analysis of why the fight against Israeli apartheid is more difficult than that against the South African is great. However, religion (zionist judaism and zionist christianity) is also a factor that plays a major role here (of making it more tuff) and shouldn't be ignored.
